Hi Sarah, when I am doing a cross stitch piece I always work out a ‘route’ that I’m going to take, for a given floss colour; this applies to the cross stitches and also to the backstitch outlines if there are any. As regards the backstitch outlines I always ask myself where I want to end up for a given route. If I want to finish the route back where I started then I always use Holbein stitch. Alternatively, if I want to finish the route in a different place to where I started, then I would always use backstitch. If the route is circular then I can use either stitch. I would use exactly the same approach in Blackwork. As regards which needle to use - I find that for sewing a straight line in back/Holbein stitch I can achieve a much neater line if I use an ordinary sewing needle with a sharp point and, especially when using a single thread, split the thread with the point. For me, using a tapestry needle without thread-splitting creates a more segmented line and doesn’t look anywhere near as good; so far I’ve been fortunate in that splitting the thread has not resulted in it breaking !

I will be doing some blackwork on a partlet for my daughter, who will be participating in our local Renaissance Fair. Would the Holbein stitch be Elizabethan era appropriate? I am now off to watch your video on Elizabethan braind stiches.

Because I'm using a variegated thread for a SAL, I would be better off using back stitch for the entire pattern, would that be right?
