I love that you have an aquarium just for bladder snails! What I thought was a baby mystery snail was actually a bladder snail, and she just laid her first eggs a few days ago! I'm setting up a 2 gallon tank for the new babies. I appreciate that you have so much information on their care. Also, they're speckled and they're friendly. What's not to love?

They can be somewhat colorful too in their own way. So far we have seen body colors in orange, blue, purple and white. Though they do seem to change color based on food or age.

I keep a 5 gallon with snails and love them. They clean off decor and plants for me. When algae builds on my decor or plants I just drop pieces in there with them and the next day they’re spotless. My cichlids love to eat them so they get lots of snacks when I return the cleaner pieces. They’ll clean some in my big tank but get eaten up quick and never establish a population in there. Well worth running one more airline and a small sponge filter for them.

I love bladders and ramshorn. I prefer them over the store bought fancier snails. I love the little dude sailing with his safety line! Thank you for the video.

Yes thank you! Bladder snails get a bad rap in the aquarium industry. And I can see why in some ways. They can get into filters and things which isn't ideal. But their benefits outweigh the drawbacks imo. I think of them like little bio-machines. Always cleaning and reproducing. Saving us a bit of work as they live out their lives.

I have a snail tank, was not originally set up for them, Bill, the original snail, hitched a ride, after six months alone, he/they had babies, we were sooo excited, my whole office watches the new emotional support snails

I just started my bladder snail tank 3 weeks ago. I have maybe 20 adults who have laid eggs everywhere. Some are now hatching every day. I can see the empty sacs left behind. But no baby snails anywhere. Are they just so tiny and hiding in the plants? I don’t have fish or anything with them. I have a sponge prefilter so they don’t get hurt. I do have some copepods and detritus worms. I hope they are in there somewhere

I just started one too and mine just started hatching. They are indeed extremely tiny, so if you have a lot of plants/decor they’re going to be hard to find for now.
@BucketPonds
@BucketPonds Жыл бұрын
Yes the new hatchlings are very small. They like to hide out in the plants and substrate until they are old enough to breed. A good rule of thumb is once they're big enough to see then they're old enough to breed

About to experiment using them for composting and making liquid plant food
@BucketPonds

Hey EF that's a great idea. We have also experimented with aquatic compost using snails. Results were excellent. Turns out snail waste is extremely fertile. After a while the "tea" makes an excellent liquid fertilizer

@@BucketPonds Yes I've tried snail poop water but almost every time mushrooms tend to sprout up. I don't know if this is a good or bad thing.
@Rick-the-Swift

@@ExtravagantFragrances Depends I guess. If the mushrooms are edible and you've got space to grow them, great. Or just compost them as well. I may have to try this myself

Is that eggs on the glass? 2:20 Oh you answered that question, and I was right. Judging by the way the eggs wave in the water, it would make sense that they could make a web line type thing out of that same slime that the egg slime is made of

any chance i can get a batch of your genetically modified snails? I have them already but i noticed my new york snails are much more hardy but lack in size.
@BucketPonds
@BucketPonds Жыл бұрын
They're not technically GMO, as we lack the funding for a gene gun or other equipment. Though I am shopping for such things 🤞 Imagine pure bred dogs which carry numerous mutations from inbreeding. Dalmatians go blind for instance. We have basically made "mutts" that are less inclined to show defects. You can achieve similar results by shopping around and mixing in snails from vendors online. As for their size I am still researching what caused the GIANT bladder snails seen in our April Channel Update. They may become available for sale eventually

@@BucketPonds It's been a year. and i only have absumptions. 1 Good genes, etc if 2 snails from 2 different gene pools mate and the offspring has good diverse genes they are larger. 2 calcium availability. I've noticed the jars/tanks i have calcium leaking rocks, eggshells. the snails were bigger. 3 no fish. i noticed the bigger bladder snails couldnt hide as well as the smaller one and most fish would flip them over and suck them out of the shells. attempting a new tank with plenty of plants. and putting 2-4 bladder snails from each tank i have. the biggest ones pref. and i'll try to update in a few months :)

What is the difference between pond and bladder snails??? I have about 4 thousand snail friends, ramshorns and bladder snails and maybe pond snails????
@kassieguzman4514
@kassieguzman4514 Жыл бұрын
These are bladder snails, pond snails are a bit bigger and their cone part of their shells point different ways. Bladder snails “comes” are turned left and pond turned right.
