Mr Hill, I ran across your Blade 450 Maiden flight while browsing for my "next step" Heli. I'm ready to step up, just as you did. I ran across your video on the Horizon site. I recognized you right off. I don't know if you remember me, but we corresponded a few times regarding your Apprentice video. Guess our paths are running a somewhat parallel path. With the exception of your video work, Impressive! Diverse too, beautiful flying machines to beautiful ladies (It's a rough job, but someone's got to do it). NIce work, all. My Apprentice has many miles on it, as I've converted it to a FPV platform, with a 4S3700 she flies about 40 minutes, with a Sony camera in the windscreen and a Mobius in the belly. I've been flying a V911 indoors and have a 200SRX which I'm getting the hang of with the help of a lot of Realflight time. If you can keep a Realflight Heli in the air, the real ones are easy! Just thought I'd touch base and thank you again for your help, I've enjoyed your work, Glad to see Horizon noticed as well. Keep up the good flying, and video production work, I'm sure I'm not the only one enjoying it, I'm now subscribed so it may not be so long until our next contact. Sincerely, Scott Marshall
@PAW611010 жыл бұрын
Scott, thanks for this comment and for staying in touch. I'm glad to hear that you and the Apprentice are doing well and you have added the FPV platform to your flying. I can assure you that flying helis will definitely become an obsession if not a passion. How do you like the 200SRX? It appears to be an excellent heli to have in one's inventory. I tried to look up the vid you mentioned you saw on HH's website, but I couldn't find it. I do appreciate you telling me about it though and it is an honor if they have thought to post it for their customers. I'm currently working on creating three new heli videos that will be coming out over the next few months, so it's something you'll notice now that you're a subscriber to my channel. I do have to throw in some photography stuff because that what my channel started off featuring to my viewers. Stay on that sim and keep flying!

I think that a great big thank you from all of entering the flying aspect of the RC hobby should go out to you. You show how safe practice, and determination can make the very complex and expensive part of the hobby can be done. I used the flight simulator and when I flew I flew conservatively maintaining constant control . Thanks for showing others how you did it.

Hi Willie, I must say as a veteran of RC planes for 40 some years i assumed that flying a heli would be a piece of cake. Bought a coaxial bird and it was a breeze. Then i bought the 120S and a CP x. Went to the CP x first and boy was it a hand full. I beat the little guy to a pulp. Rebuilt it, but while waiting for parts i found your channel here. Have since practiced on the sim and the 120S to the point i can now hover the Nano the way it deserves. I just bought the 330x and 360cfx and am so glad i have watched your videos. Take it slow and easy as you describe makes all the difference. Thank you for making the videos. Saved me a lot of $$$.

Nice flying! I'm right behind you on this. I've been flying my 120SR for 6 months, and my mcpx2 for the last couple. I have a 450 3D sitting on a shelf looking at me and asking to fly, but I want to wait until I am really confident, then just hover like you.
@PAW611010 жыл бұрын
Brad, my hats off to you for not jumping on your 450 3D in a moment of passion. Before this maiden flight video I actually owned the heli for a month, but spent that time THOROUGHLY reviewing the manual and watching other maiden flights on KZbin so I would know what to expect. My main concern was safety because this size heli is serious business. Like me you'll know when it's time to take that maiden flight. Hint: If you own a sim do a 10-15 minute flying session before going out. I did and it calmed my nerves (a little!!!!). Thanks for the compliment and good luck. Dustin, thanks for the encouragement. Yeah, I noticed the slight tail wag and since I'm new at flying this size heli I'll have to chat with someone on what to do to control it. I'm also thinking that maybe because I've tamed the settings WAYdown that that might have something to do with it.
@dustinlastinger10 жыл бұрын
Yea I agree. If I were you I would put the settings as in the manual do you a test hover and see how you feel with that. If it's a bit much you could lower your settings from there, or just try lowering your gyro gain.

I'm using the settings from J. Salts' ebook (Setup & Tips For Electric Collective Pitch RC Helicopters). rchelicopterfun.com I have the Blade manual settings under a different model profile and will give it a try after some initial flights with the tamed down settings. Thanks for the tips.

@TonyHarris9910 жыл бұрын
Willie Hill, Jr Just about finished upgrading the software to 2.0 on my Quad 350 QX, re-positioning and shielding the antenna and GPS against RF with Kapton Tape for better flight parameters and loss of GPS lock when my video camera is turned on. Working my way to FPV flying. Also installed Carbon Fiber Props and more powerful motors just put out by Hobby King. Next on the list will be "Fat Shark goggles, transmitter and receiver." Oh yes and a new Lawn chair to relax in while I soar the friendly skies of WV. It cost to much to fly the real thing these days so this is the next best thing for me now. LOL! Got my toes crossed for your next flight. Good Luck!
@PAW611010 жыл бұрын
Tony Harris Tony, you are having TOO much fun! AMA mag just did an article on the 350 QX, I'm not certain if you read it, but that's another hot item that HH has added to their inventory. Sounds like you've got a real handle on upgrading your QX. In fact, I had to look up what Kapton Tape was because I'd never heard of it. I recently got the chance to fly FPV at a local airshow and it was interesting. The thermals are cranking up here in GA and I'll soon I'll be launching the Calypso to snag a few, so I'll be needing a lawn chair too.

Hey Willie- You are a big inspiration. I am pretty fearless with my FP 200 but that is like skiing the bunny slopes. Have you used a sim? I have the Phoenix and the 450 seems pretty simple minus the fear factor. I was wondering if the real bird flys the same way.
@PAW61109 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment and I'm trying to be as much an inspiration to new pilots as I can because we ALL need a little help from our "friends". I don't think anyone can get ahead flying model aircraft, especially helis, without someone giving them tips, instructions, and encouragement. I do have the Phoenix & RealFlight sims, but I use the Phoenix the most because the RealFlight is the Basic version ($99) which was a gift from a friend of mine. I believe the best way to describe the use of a sim is this way: 1) You will learn better hand, eye, & brain coordination that will move faster and further ahead in your flight training, 2) You can pack in more flight time regardless of the severity of the weather or time of day, 3) You can crash as often as you shouldn't for FREE!!!, 3) You can get the experience of flying different versions of aircraft before purchasing, and 4) You will build confidence which is a priceless commodity when flying RC models. I said all that to say there is a slight difference in flying the real thing because at the flying field you're contending with your adrenaline, the weather, the true flight characteristics of the model, the powerful sound of the props/rotors turning, your flying skills, and etc.. You can wrap all those adjectives into one word: FUN! Enjoy!

For a long time I flew a nano cps and my first bigger Heli was the Blade 360CFX 3S. First flight attempts on the big boy were tip overs on take off but I learned how to get her off the ground and after a hundred hover only flights I one day threw caution into the wind and flew her, it is so rewarding flying my helis in circuits with ever more intricate maneuvers. How well have you progressed in the hobby and don’t tell me you gave up and switched to drones. Haha.
@PAW61105 жыл бұрын
Keith, thanks for the comment. Brother, you KNOW what a challenge it is learning to fly the larger helis. I still have three of them, but I don't fly them as often as I should & when I do I'm shaking in my boots and on the sticks. Being the fact that I'm a photographer by heart & degree I'm really having a blast capturing video with my DJI Phantom. However, I've made it a practice to try to fly all of my models although I do have several that are my favorite. Progression in the hobby is fun and I'm loving it. Take care!

I'm really enjoying your videos. I have a Blade SR that I converted to a belt-driven tail after I learned to fly an MSR, so I identified with your video on the steps of learning helicopters. I see you also like to fly aeroplanes. Do you find that there is one radio that is good for both helicopters and aeroplanes? Also do you find that if you fly a plane one day, does it make it more difficult to go back to flying a helicopter the next day, or are the skills required somewhat complimentary? I am building a plane at the moment and would like to use the same radio. I haven't bought a radio yet, I just use the TX that came with the SR!
@PAW61109 жыл бұрын
Keith Keith, thanks for the compliment on my videos. I pretty much fly everything that's out there, but crossing over from heis to airplanes is not that big of a jump except helis are much more intense flying because you have to be on the control sticks much of the flight time. If you buy a decent TX like the DX6-DX8 then you won't need to purchase another one unless you are looking for bragging rights. I own the DX5e, DX7s, & just purchased the DX6 which is a great little radio for the type flying that I'm currently doing. You might want to take a look at it: www.horizonhobby.com/dx6-6-channel-dsmx-reg%3B-transmitter-spmr6700 Enjoy!

Willie I hung in there with the nano and have a decent hover it`s still a super quick heli to handle , I have heard the the bigger the heli CP heli the easier it is to fly instead of that nano cpx , Did you find the 450x a bit easier on lift off and landing??
@PAW611010 жыл бұрын
For certain the Nano can be tricky at first if you're new to a micro CP heli, but if you dial in the settings that I offer in my Nano video it is tameable and much easier to fly. Once you get a handle on things then you can dial up the settings. To answer your question: Yes the 450X is much smoother flying (because of the BeastX gyro), but knowing how to handle the Nano played a lot in me being able to fly it so well from the start. Learning how to fly the Nano was worth its weight in gold especially due to its durability. You're not going to be able to make too many mistakes flying the 450X because not only is it quick but it's extremely powerful.

Yes, I'm still flying the two 450Xs that I own. HH discontinued the 450X and basically replaced it with the 300 CFX, so you're virtually flying the same bird. It's a nice heli but I have found my Align 450 is much smoother flying and it doesn't have that plastic vibrating sound to it. Enjoy!

I have a sim and have been trying to decide what model heli to get first....I can now sport fly fairly well on the sim and notice the larger helis are easier to fly than the smaller models, but obviously the cost range from the 100--450 size is a big factor in my decision....what do you recommend for a beginner like me, as I would like to start on something near the 250 size....thanks
@PAW61108 жыл бұрын
Gary, have you flown any helis in real life aside from on the sim? If not, you really need to get some actual CP flying under your belt so that you don't demolish your first bird on it's maiden flight. For the size you're talking about HH makes the 200 SR X and I would recommend the Align 250 for a few more bucks but higher quality. I hope this helps.
@bikerforever689 жыл бұрын
Hi willie,can I ask if you flew this for the first time with completely stock settings out of the box? I've just got myself a 450x and see you have different settings on the beastx like normal,sport,pro ect. I wondered if the default box setting would be to aggressive for my first flight. I do also fly a v977 and a blade 230s. Many thanks and hope you are still flying
@PAW61109 жыл бұрын
+Paul Hoggett Paul, thanks for viewing my video and commenting. I believe your question is two-fold. 1) Did I use the BeastX default settings, and 2) Did I use the TX settings as listed in the 450X manual. I made no changes in the BeastX settings. However, I did use different TX settings than those listed in the manual and that is why I experienced the tail wagging you see in the video. To correct this problem, a friend of mine who was an HH sponsored heli pilot toned down my 450X and I used those settings for a long time during my flight training. Currently my flying skills are more advanced so lately I've been flying with the settings listed in the manual. If you send me your email address I can send you the settings that my friend dialed in for me and you can try them to see if you find them to your liking. Yes, I'm still fly although last month I finally crashed the heli you see in this video. Out of despair, I purchased a new Blade 450X, invested in an Align TRex 450, and then rebuilt the crashed one (after I got over sulking & blaming myself for flying against the sun and losing orientation), so now I have three 450s. I wish you success, it's a tough challenge, but put in tons of time on the sim and take your time with the basics. Oh yeah, fly often so your nerves won't rule the roost. Enjoy!
@bikerforever689 жыл бұрын
+Willie Hill, Jr hi willie thanks for taking the time to reply,my email is bikerforever68@hotmail.com and I'd appreciate your settings,I've heard how twitchy the 450x is out of the box and seen other people struggle but I may be overreacting,sorry to hear you crashed but I guess we all do at some point,thanks again for your videos,watching you inspired me to get a 450x and I enjoy watching your journey Regards Paul
@PAW61109 жыл бұрын
+Paul Hoggett Paul, I'll send you the settings ASAP. To be honest the Blade 450X is silky smooth right out of the box. My only issue with the bird is that initially I was scared to death of it! After flying the Nano (which is about the size of the 450X's tail rotor) when it spooled up on my maiden flight I was virtually shaking in my shoes. Here's an event that happened just prior to me advancing to 450 size helis that instilled fear in me: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jHbMnWWspJuXorM Always making certain that I use throttle hold when handling the heli and getting used the the sound of the blades rotating has gotten me to the point where I feel comfortable with the bird, but I never overlook safety procedures both on the ground and in the air. That accident is a reminder of how quick and deadly our helis are. In closing, you own (in my opinion) a decent heli that is fun to fly and easy to repair if need be. Enjoy!
@bikerforever689 жыл бұрын
+Willie Hill, Jr thanks willie and I look forward to see what settings you used when you have time to send them to me. The video is a sobering reminder to us all on how dangerous these machines can be.ive been learning CP since last August and the blade 230s is also a great CP learner with the "panic" button which is a great idea for learners,but I'm still aprehensive of how quick and large the 450 will be in comparison to a 230,and the fact there is no bailout button for when it goes wrong.as I've said I took a similar path to and watching others on KZbin like yourself has certainly giving me lots of knowledge along this journey of this lovely hobby. Paul

+Paul Hoggett Paul, I know that the length of time that you've been flying your 230 will pay off when you decide to step up to the 450X. So, take your time honing your skills and you'll know when you're ready to buy your first 450 size machine.

Gary Vale Use the Blade because it is not as good in quality as the Align and you'll want it to be ur dream machine once you've become proficient. Plastic vs metal.
@garyvale83477 жыл бұрын
so are you recommending to use the Blade to learn on first because it's more of a throw away heli, not really repairable if I crash and fly the Align once I get more proficient?

Hello ..I just ordered the 450x rtf...is this a good heli
@PAW611010 жыл бұрын
Charles, The Blade 450X is my first heli in the size category and although it had a major mechanical failure Dec. 1st, where it totally self-destructed on the ground during a throttle up, I'm still excited about owning it. I checked my flight log and know that I had a total of 5.5 hrs. of flight time on it when (I suspect) that it blew a tail rotor servo. I'd heard rumors about this happening, but because I wasn't attempting any 3D flying at the time I didn't feel it would be an issue. I contacted HH about the incident and they were generous enough to send me replacement parts at no cost although they offered not explanations. However, I believe that they are aware of the issue because the tech told me that they had replaced the tail servo with a metal one in the newly released 450Xs. So, maybe by the time you purchase yours you will have the upgraded model which also includes some other modifications that they have made to the heli. I was at the hobby shop last week and noticed that the canopy on the 450X is now yellow instead of blue (which was a terrible color to see against the sky), so maybe this is the newly modified version that the tech was talking about. My advice to you is to make sure that the heli you buy has the new metal tail servo. I'm going to be posting a video on my channel concerning this information as well as some other pertinent info about the 450X, so make sure you are a subscriber. I hope this helps. Enjoy!

If you do purchase it make sure that It's the newer version that has all metal geared servos. Also swap out the canopy for the red one, upgrade the blades to the KBDD ones, and buy orange tail rotor blades too. The main blades are a little expensive but they will light up your heli in flight and you can always determine it's orientation in the sky. www.vrchobbies.com/kbdd-325mm-fbl-orange-extreme-edition-carbon-fiber-main-rotor-blades/ I hope this helps.
