@@aidanbae3158 I would say a little of both. Back when we were able to have social functions the sci-fi genre came up in a discussion. 10 people were there and only 1 person saw the movie and said they didn't like it. I was appalled because I saw it in the theater and it was a one of a kind beautiful experience that I will never forget. I might be biased because I loved the first one so much.

I personally believe that K’s (or Joe’s) decision of saving Rick was neither following the replicants or the humans. The whole movie tries to say that being human, being able to choose, think, be born and live are what make you real. I believe that instead of killing rick (like the underground movement wanted him to do) and instead of returning him to Wallace (like what the humans would do) he saves him and reruns him to his daughter because that’s what he wants to do. He is told, “dying for the right cause is the most human thing you can do,” but I feel she means more dying for the replicants cause. He instead fulfills his story by dying for what he wants. He thinks for himself, chooses his own path not one laid out for him by others. By dying and reuniting Rick with his daughter, he basically tells both sides to fuck off, that he will not be used anymore and that his life is one he carves for himself.
@jervyan
@jervyan Жыл бұрын
The woman said dying for the right cause she meant dying for the underground movements cause, but Joe chose to die for what he thought was the right cause which is reuniting the child with its parent which is what he wanted for himself believing he was the chosen one and as ironically as it is with Joe discovering hes still just a replicant, it was the most human desicion. Very well put. I absolutely love this film, it saddens me how most people didnt even like it.

This also reflects his role in the beginning of the movie. As a bladerunner, he is a replicant that hunts his own kind, serving the oppressive humans. Rejected by both humans and replicant's, he exists on the border of the race conflict.

@Vorgaloth

I'm 40 years old and never saw the first Blade Runner. I knew it was an important film that had a cult following. I was in the theater when the trailer for 2049 came out (trailer 3) and I thought it was so well done (including the music) that I was blown away and wanted to know this story. I went to watch the original shortly after and enjoyed it. Very unique. I saw 2049 in the theater the day after its debut. When it was over, it left me sitting in my seat for a while. The rest of the evening I just kept thinking about life - meaning, purpose, love, the difficult and complex nature of reality etc. The original was great but 2049 just really grabbed me. I love this film and consider it the greatest sci-fi next to Terminator 2 and Aliens. The film score was magnificent too. I ended up writing a summation after having seen it a second time: "There was no real decoy. It was purely on paper. K/Joe is utterly, completely, unequivocally unremarkable, thus his name, Joe... as in Average Joe. Joi does not possess a soul. She is completely fake. She is the other side of the Replicant coin and is made solely to please and coddle her owner/lover. Her entire branding scheme is that she'll be anything you want. Joi is K's fleeting dream of being special -- to be human, or as he put it, "to have a soul" -- so she always reinforced this to him. Just before Luv crushed her emanator she made sure in her final moment to tell him that she loved him. Wallace posed a question about whether Deckard was moved by love or by programming. To me there's no doubt whatsoever Deckard is fully human. The original movie is about a bad man finding his humanity through the grace of a machine. Wallace's question is not a literal "Are you human or machine?" question, but pondering what the difference is; if love is just neurochemistry, and if we are products of biological programming or something higher, like a soul. The ultimate takeaway is that it really doesn't matter. In fact the only thing that matters is what we choose to do with our lives. We find and create our own meaning and purpose. In summary, 2049 is about dreams and delusions. K wants desperately to feel special so Joi tells him this constantly and he quickly assumes all the evidence points to him because it's his dream. He becomes deluded and forces himself into the situation even as it destroys him. He thinks this is what it means to be human - to grapple with one's humanity. Then upon meeting Freysa, K comes to learn that in fact he is not special after all. Not born but manufactured. He is torn between two sides telling him what his identity is and should be; the LAPD who informs his identity as that of a slave, and the resistance which informs his identity as that of a free Replicant. When K comes across the giant pink Joi on the bridge, she says to him "You look like a good Joe". He then realizes that not even the name his Joi gave him was special. Her feelings for him were never real... just programming. K, at this point an emotionally heartbroken broken Replicant. It is in this moment that he chooses to follow his own path and not let anyone tell him who he is or what he should do. He makes the most human decision of all and takes his life into his own hands. He saves Deckard for the same reason Roy did in the first Blade Runner. He wanted someone to remember him, for his final decision that fully validates him as human to not be in vain. No one else gave him his identity, only he did, and his sacrifice ensured forever that he was by every metric a human being, even if the world would ultimately forget him."

I have a theory. I believe this movie is a strong representation of people believing that they are alone and not special. It’s what the main character grows to learn throughout the film. That even though he thought he was and the clues appear to say so, it turned out he wasn’t and he lost it all in the pursuit of that belief. Yet, he was the one that figured it out. He was the one that was used as an alternative and who had the memories placed inside of. Even though what he thought was his purpose wasn’t true, he still played a very important role but taking what he learned and then making his own decisions. And in that was he was the only one who could have accomplished that ending. So maybe one day we’ll feel like we are alone, like we lost it all, and like we are not special. But you are, sometimes you have to take what cards you were dealt and still play your best hand. You never know what important that can play out to be in the long run

I just realized that Deckard was saved by a Replicant twice in the series and what Joe does in many ways makes him human in that he choses to save a life and reunite Deckard with his daughter.

This movie has touched me in a strange way, I'm about to be 34, I'm not that old, but so many depictions of what K went through feel very prescient to me, the moments of loss, defeat, and failure really ring true. Maybe it's just me, but I could see myself reflected in him in subtle ways I haven't experienced in a film in a long time.

It’s so sad to see Joy tell K about him being born. She really is just always telling him exactly what he wants to hear. He wants to be the son and she knows he wants to so that’s what he tells her. Beautiful and sad. Great video!

Amazing character. Everyone slags her in the “you look lonely” scene. But she “ascended” in her way as much as K did in his. Ain’t no company program contains potential suicide for love. Or hiring a hooker to “become Real” to her man. Or hiding secrets from the company that created her. That “You look lonely” “thing” was an ad …nothing more. K didn’t slag Joi - he let her sacrifice herself for him in order to allow him to sacrifice his life for “The Child”. She was a holographic foreshadowing and “road map” for K’s own ascension.
