Bladerunner: Wind Turbine BASE Jump

There are moments in life that are surreal...
BASE jumping is widely regarded as the most dangerous sport in the world. When a jumper adds a little creativity to danger, you get the phenomenon we call “blade running.”
Once the jumper gets to the top of this 200ft wind turbine, he makes the walk of his life. After getting his bearings, he calmly yet gingerly steps onto the stalled - but still movable - blade. In an almost surreal action, he walks nearly the entire length of the 150ft blade. But, at the point of no return his forward motion starts to make the massive blade move beneath his feet. Now that the blade is going down, the athlete can no longer turn back, and he jumps!
And like that, the bar for ‘epic’ just got raised to a new level!

I’m still haunted by the pic of the two engineers that were trapped on a turbine while fire engulfed it and they tragically died. But I think that all engineers should be trained to do this. They’re already ok with the height of it so doing this could potentially save lives.

It was really cool that the blade actually started to move down when he walked outward. Makes sense: those turbine blades are in perfect balance, only a small imbalance weight will cause the turbine to rotate. It would have been very spectacular if he'd walked further and stayed there letting him slip off by the blade moving down. But I guess that's easier said than done (being an armchair base jumper) 😄

I'd like to start paramotoring but I have to say I'm feeling pretty nervous about it. Any advice on overcoming fear? Great video, subbed, liked. Respect!
@terrabiker
@terrabiker 7 жыл бұрын
just go and do it....acknowledge the fear , think about why do you fear and what do you fear , objectify the fear and realize that fear should serve in your benefit , but should not keep you from doing things , it should serve you just to do the things safe enough and should make you look for backups in case things go south , fear is not stronger than your dreams. Let the logic drive you , emotions are the reward you get afterwards. tip : If you have a chance to try the virtual reality somewhere , ask them to let you play Richie's Plank Experience , you can fly around city , it's very useful to overcome some initial fear of heights ;)

Hey TerraBiker, thanks - I really appreciate your comment and within it, the best advice I've pretty well ever heard on the subject. I posted this comment awhile ago, and so far what I have done to separate the rational fear from the irrational, is I have decided rather to move to Gyroplanes for their safety and ability to fly stable in inclement weather and good safety options in the event of power loss. You also need around 40 - 45 hours training so it's intensive and this will mitigate as much pilot error as possible. For the rest I guess it's just to focus on having fun and trusting in the equipment. Anything beyond that I think is just a numbers game, and if I'm going to be taken, then at least I've done everything to prevent it. Thanks again!

From what I have seen, it wouldn't be smart to repack it right there in the field. Could potentially get sticks or something in the chute whilst folding it on the ground that could cause a malfunction.

you can "re-fold" it in the field. It may take an hour, but sure you can do multiple jumps a day. If you are hyped, you should start with skydiving. It may cost you 5 - 10.000 bucks, but after you have 500 regular skydive jumps, you can decide if you need the extra kick from base. Maybe by then you can judge the danger better and stick to skydiving.
