Wynton Marsalis has won nine Grammy Awards. In 1983 and 1984, he became the only artist ever to win Grammy Awards for both jazz and classical records. He is one of only two artists, along with polka bandleader Jimmy Sturr, to win Grammy Awards for five consecutive years of musical contributions.

You know why Wynton is not on my list? First, let me say that Wynton is an amazing musician and trumpet player. Almost no one can touch him on the trumpet, certainly. The reason I've come to disregard Wynton as a trumpeter is that I can't name any other trumpet player that he mentored. That's probably on me, I'll admit. But still, all the guys on this list brought along many, many other trumpet players and other musicians throughout their career and those connections are myriad and clear. Not taking away anything from his accomplishments over the years and he's undoubtedly influenced and inspired others along the way but still...

As a boy, I used to love listening to Al Hirt and Herb Alpert. Later, I was really into Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Miles Davis, Maynard Ferguson and I also really liked Chuck Mangione (I even went to one of his concerts). But now that I have seen a lot of videos and listened to a lot more players, I think the best of all time are: Raphael Mendez, Clifford Brown, Louis Armstrong and Maurice Andre. They each have top level mastery of the instrument but also a style they created that stands the test of time. Miles, for example, has a style that stands the test of time but I'm not sure he really has mastery over the instrument. Arturo has mastery of the horn like few others, but not sure he has a style that is so distinctive. Arturo can actually imitate and sound exactly like many of the greats before him.

Another great who should be listed. I was almost sucked in by this farce, because Miles was so far down the list, as he should be, and expected Wynton at #3, Dizzy at #2, and Satchmo at #1, as he should be, on any list about trumpet players. Herp Alpert is a phenomenal individual, and is a saint in my world because he gave us Karen Carpenter, my Madonna. However, his talent is as a recording executive, not a trumpet player. While anybody who has sold a single album (and he sold more than one) is light years ahead of me, he is at best an advanced amateur with an incredible production engineer, have heard 6 guys live in the past week whom are better all around. I give him MAJOR props, that he made the most of what he had.

I once asked our fourth-grade band conductor, a professional musician in San Francisco, what he thought of Herb Alpert. He bluntly said he could name 10 trumpet players in the Bay Area who could outplay Alpert. Having played trumpet professionally for many years, I fully agree. Claiming Herb Alpert as the number one trumpet player is the most absurd conclusion I've ever seen on KZbin.

Mostly agree - but Herb Alpert? Yes, he was hugely influential but when you add your other judging categories he pales to all others on your list (except Chuck Mangione - who shouldn't be on this list) - I don't care how many children were conceived with Alpert's music. Agree with others that Harry James, Dizzy and Wynton Marsalis should be there. I would give nods to Al Hirt, Bill Chase, Don Ellis and Adolph Herseth.

I hope these are not in order. Chuck Mangione, whom I admittedly love, is nowhere near Doc Severinsen. Maynard isn't as good as Doc either, though I am a huge MF fan. And to put Doc #10 and Herb #1 is completely moronic.

Chuck Magione: First I was taking lessons at Eastman when he was still teaching. I later learned from a former teacher that he wasn’t that good of a horn player usually playing 3rd or 4th in jazz ensemble. But his true gift was arranging. His brother is equal as gifted jazz musician. Both are from my home town Rochester, NY
