This video will show you how to install a door latch in the back of you Honda Element so you can open it from the inside...Why weren't they like this in the first place?

Great video and ideas, My only advice would be to use door hardware grade rods in lew of the zip ties. Zip ties aren't very durable and are very prone to breakage over the long hall. I can just see being out camping and need this access only to hear them snap off when you really need them.

The idea of it is awesome. I would change some of the material to suite where i live. That plastic ziptie would break in no time.

ya, maybe try a bicycle brake cable

Nice neat job. It's unfortunate that we have to "fix" something Honda should have had there from the start.

When buying zip ties they are rated buy breakaway strength so when putting up tarps or vinyl signs out side on say scaffolding they break away instead of creating a sail and bring the thing down . So buy the strongest ones i have some 2 feet long 3/8 wide very strong. I think you would have to use your fob to unlock first .

As asked an answered below, the latch mechanism will not work unless the door is unlocked. Although it would be easy enough to operate them simultaneously by linking to both mechanisms, this would ALSO allow the hatch to be unlocked from the outside without a key. However, a curious thing I noticed in the service manual: if there is an electric hatch actuator, it connects to the latch mechanism, not the lock. Therefore there must be a part of the latch mechanism that mechanically overrides the lock-out function (i.e., the function that prevents it from unlatching if the door is locked). I haven't opened mine up to examine it, but a clever person might find a way to mechanically do what the electric actuator does. Another way to do this would be to install a separate lock-unlock button on the inside (like most car doors have), or use an interior door handle that has also has a built-in door lock-unlock lever (like later model cars without electric door locks).

Where can I find or order the pull handle? I'm thinking of going to a junkyard to buy a door handle. I guess it doesn't matter what kind of car it comes from. What kind did you use, if you don't mind sharing. I love the nice, neat, custom job you did. The string method isn't very appealing! If you have links for the parts, that'd be great!

Any door handle should work. a junk yard would be a great spot to check, but also ebay: www.ebay.ca/itm/Interior-Door-Handle-Fits-Honda-Element-96515-Dorman-HELP/392661891586?fits=Make%3AHonda&epid=245433578&hash=item5b6c78fa02:g:dwwAAOSw3lxeMabv

that is the latch that you pull to open the hatch. you want it in the open position when doing this

I'm curious about measurements for the location of the pull handle and latch as someone mentioned it matters. Also wondering how far up the daisy-chained zip tie you go.

sorry for taking so long to get back to you! you want the handle to be on the left side so ti pulls the latch in that direction. I think there is someone on etsy selling this as a kit now!

Applause. Querry: why zips and not braided cable, or metal rod? Compliments/critques: Superb color choice of element Pleasing voice-tone, timber, pace, clarity, enunciation Add some humor? Maybe a tad more inflection variation? Shorten & consolidate, group, show all in frame the "here's what you'll need? Where did you get handles? How much$? Do you know how to test the components of driver's side master control switch circuit board? I'm going to replace my driver's side cv axle today. I hope this choice to diy doesn't bite me. Maybe I'll attempt to video the whole event and upload to KZbin. Cheers

Overkill and overly complicated. All you need is some heavy duty nylon string and a button. Tie one end of the nylon string through the loop in the latch above the o. e. cable and run it toward the driver' side.. Punch a tiny hole through the plastic door panel in any convenient spot. Run the other end through that hole, leaving some slack hanging toward the interior. Replace the panel and pull on the string. The latch will open, and spring back. Finally, tie the button to the string, taking up enough slack so the button pulls against the interior panel. The only tools required are a pair of scissors to cut the string and an awl to punch a hole in the plastic. I even found a 1 inch diameter gray plastic button to match the interior!
