My mom and I have been making kombucha for almost 2 yrs. I love second fermenting. I have used my old scobis in my 🍅 plants. Also have dehydrated and made into dog chews for my friends dogs. Also just as a tip. I use a coffee filter to place on top of my kombucha gallon jars while fermenting, with a rubber band, so I can write the date and what tea I used. Very helpful! I don't have success with black tea so I use green teas or white teas different flavors. I also keep a little extra starter tea with an extra scobi in a small glass jar just in case I need or a friend needs. Kombucha has Sooooo many health benefits! Success to all who venture on this path!!! It's fun!

Where can I purchase the large tea bags? I frequently get no carbonation, maybe because I frequently do not add anything for second fermentation. We actually like it plain. I use black caps with a plastic insert purchased from Amazon. I watched your first Kombucha video several years ago when I was learning how to make it. Have shared many scoby’s. Thank you,

I picked this up from someone somewhere along my journey and I want to share it because you are not onto it. At least not in this video. When you remove the pellicle, stir the tea. You will stir up the scoby and distribute it evenly through the brew. Then pour off your starter. You will have an instant head when you stir up the brew.
@daddykirbs
@daddykirbs 6 жыл бұрын
This is something I've learned since my first Kombucha video. It is also something I have never communicated well. Thank you for pointing it out. In my first video I illustrated that I pour my brew from the fermenting jar into a pitcher. This effectively stirs it up well to evenly distribute the bacteria and yeast.

First time seeing this...I’ve been home brewing for about 5 years now. The only additional comment I would make is douse everything that touches the brew or Scoby (utensils, crock, bottles, spoon, even your hands) with vinegar. This will prevent any contamination. Also, worms in my worm bin love old Scobys. Happy brewing!

Feed the scoby to the chickens. I cleared out my hotel and then for the first time ever ( I've been making kombucha for 3 yrs) my scoby got mold on it. So had to throw everything out. And of course it happened after clearing out the hotel lol. So had to buy a new scoby. I figure once every 3 yrs isn't bad. I have a new batch brewing now. My favorite is pear and ginger. I haven't tried black cherry so will have to try it. I have chronic bladder infections. I would get one every 2 to 3 months. After I started drinking kombucha I only had 1 infection 6 months after starting kombucha then none since. My Dr thought it was odd lol. Apparently kombucha will kill off the bad stuff in the bladder that even antibiotic could kill off completely.

No need to buy a scoby. Make one to two gallons from one bottle of GT's original kombucha. I usually use a cup and a half. Your new scoby will form more beautiful than ever. All for about three bucks. In fact, about half time I don't use a scoby, just starter.

You may want to burp your second ferment jars after a few days. I bought some 16 ounce grolsch bottles for the same reason and had them sitting on an open shelf in my dining room after I did the second ferment. On day three I was standing there talking with my mother in law and had one explode right in front of me! Scared the crap out of me and got the kombucha all over the place on books and other random things on the shelf.

Love this video and your detailed explanation! Could you give a link to the bottles you bought from Amazon? Also do you plan to drink directly from these bottles? If so, your method of cleaning them? Dishwasher or vinegar solution? Please let us know your opinion of these bottles once your second fermentation is completed. Did they break? Did they provide good carbonation for your Kombucha? I heard that the vessel washed in the dishwasher may have some dishwasher liquid soap inside the vessel so it’s a good idea to rinse with filtered water before using.

These jars should be burped to avoid a dangerous explosion. I use large Gatorade bottles because they’re safe, strong, and you can see the lid swell and feel the hardness of the bottle when it’s expanded quite a bit, letting you know it either needs to be refrigerated or burped (open the cap slightly to release a little gas).

I filled them to the shoulder of the bottle and checked for carbonation after 24 hours... nothing, 48 hours still no carbonation. Hopefully my kombucha isn’t ruined. @@ambersantovi3230 It feeds on the honey fine, but it takes longer -- and I have only done it by making the SCOBY myself while using honey, so it is possible that a SCOBY used to only cane sugar would have trouble with the honey, not sure. How did the new bottles work out? Is there any concern for leaching with that stainless steel piece inside the cap?

Hey buddy, please help me out: I made my first gallon batch of kombucha fermenting for 10 days then I bottled into 6 different bottles to play with different added fruited flavor, after waiting for 3 days, I stored in the fridge. I opened today to taste them and none of them are carbonated or fizzy. Im so bummed. I wonder if I should take them out of the fridge, put more sugar and leave them outside to make them more fizzy? ughhh, sucks that they didnt come out the way I EXPECTED. thanks PLEASE ADVISE when u get the chance.

I want to start off by saying that I appreciate your videos. I just had a question. How can you describe the second fermentation taste with the naked mango juice?

Are the new bottles you are showing from Amazon working in terms of the caps? because of the gas the Kombucha produce? Is it safe to open them without a burst out?

I love the bottles, but there are a few reasons not to like the lids. They haven't burst and I don't suspect they will, HOWEVER that little bit of metal on the inside of the lid isn't good for the brew. Also, the caps are hard to remove. Several of my lids have come apart. If these bottles had better lids I'd be singing the praises still.

I'm busy with my first Kombucha batch....when I made my first "scoby" it was in a small consol jar about 330ml jar and now I made 3 litres of tea in a 3 litre jar so obviously the scoby is tiny in that huge jar of tea... How long do you suggest will it take my "scoby" to ferment the tea to that "sweet spot"?
@daddykirbs
@daddykirbs 5 жыл бұрын
It's so hard to say for sure how long your batch will take. I'd start tasting it around 5 days to learn the timing in your conditions.

Also wondering how those new bottles worked out. I need to get some for a second ferment instead of mason jars. The kids popped last time. Thanks for the info.

Can ACV turn into kombucha? I started some from your video on making it and put it into mason jars. Started a new batch. I opened a jar and it popped and fizzed like soda! I just watched all your kombucha videos and was wondering if it's the same thing since I must not have let the first batch go long enough. It smelled vinegar-y but I'll be waiting much longer with this batch!

Daddykirbs Farm - A Homesteading Story What is wrong with the lids? Do they not provide a tight fit to build up the fizz or do they loose their fit too quickly over time?
@daddykirbs
@daddykirbs 4 жыл бұрын
@@ekkcheng They have a stainless finish on them and that isn't ideal for the brew. I compensated by putting some freezer bag plastic on the mouth then putting the lids on... that helped I think but then there's the issue of the lids getting so tight they don't come off well.

In my original kombucha video ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/aGSzaISnqM94g9k ) I share how I put it in the pantry for 3 or 4 days, then the refrigerator for at least a day. That's a normal second ferment for me.
