Thank you to everyone that has watched the show and commented so far! The “sealed with glue” remake was very tongue in cheek ! The case can be popped open! However it was hermetically sealed so what happens when you open it??? The movement degrades quicker?? How tight will the seal be after the case is opened a couple of times ??? It’s an understandable error, since Sistem51 movements can’t be opened. This blancpain x swatch watch has a snap on case back so they can be opened and the movement replaced and or serviced. Given that this is your main criticism I wanted to mention it.

Not that you really can service it. A lot of the parts are soldered together, including the mainspring so you can't regulate it, and you can't easily buy bare movements and have your own watch person do a swap like you can with Seiko.

Good point! Since you can remove the dial and rotor only the bare movement remains. To replace it will still produce waste but honestly, who will ever pay for getting their NH35 serviced or repaired if you can buy a new one for €50?

I confess i queued up for an hour in covent garden. Joined the queue at 10am, no camping. Didnt get one but im glad. The queue was filled with youths who didnt know a blancpain from a bell & ross. Went home and picked up a Squale on ebay for the same price....gotsta scratch the itch.

You shouldn't fomo into these watches, wait in queues, try to flip them or really treat them as anything other than a plastic fun little watch. It's fun! I'll buy the artic, use it in the sea here in Greece ( just like my Swatch scuba) and if it breaks then it'll sit in my watch box and remind me if the fun I had with it. If you like it and are ok with the price lovely. If You don't, don't buy it and let us suckers enjoy ourselves 😉

I don’t disagree with any of this. However… I am an 80s kid and loved a Pop Swatch in my day and I don’t mind Swatch using these collaborations to make money or to build up their other brands. Also, I love Blancpain and the Fifty Fathoms is my grail watch, but it is unlikely I will ever be able to afford one. This is about as accessible as one will ever be. I’m not into the hype, but in a few months I can see myself getting myself one. You’re dead right on pointing out that once the System 51 breaks that’s it done, which makes it different from the Moon Swatches where you can generally stick another battery in. And they are pricey. I suppose it’s about going into it knowing the cons - which all the hype is designed to hide.

Swatch are being really crafty with "collaborations" of brands they actually own themselves. Even if it's a Swatch, dressed up like a Blancpain, I did see the charm in the designs. But after the quality issues of the MoonSwatch (which I was so close to buying), it put me off. I've just turned 27 and starting to appreciate things lasting longer - like purchasing a watch knowing it's going to tick away for years. I might just have a look at the Sistem 51 watches instead as I do find the movement interesting.

Hey MWC! Great show and you’re spot on with everything as usual. Blancpain was already on my radar, so much so that when I am on hols next March in Vegas I was likely going to treat myself to a real 50 Fathoms as I remember them being available when I was there a few years ago but couldn’t stretch with the dosh. Now that they’ve pulled this stunt it’s out of the question. Poor Blancpain - but at least they did this before I bought one thank heavens. Plus it’s reassuring to know that Rolex and Breitling wouldn’t ever be doing this! Statistically I wonder how many people who buy the plastic toy version upgrade to a real one and how many like me who were looking at a real one now won’t and will keep their money.

I enjoy Swatch watches. My first introduction to Swatch was in 1989 while my Omega Seamaster was at the Swiss factory for service. I expected to get it back in a month or two but six months later I get a parcel from Switzerland containing an apology letter and a free Swatch watch. Since then I have owned several Swatch. My favorite is the SCUBA. They are all fun and silly. And I would love to have a Moon Swatch but I'm not going to pay that much. When the hype has died down I will buy a used one. Probably wait until they are valued at $50. Not the crazy prices now. And all the phoney ones out there. Not playing.

Swatch has never done anything else than trying to hype a fashion accessory. I will get one of these in time. No hassle though. I find it fantastic to get a cheap teaser to the real thing. And I bet that many young people ....(whatever brand still to come) x Swatch , will get the real thing once they are older. A Swatch has been, is and will always be a fashion accessory rather than a piece of jewelry. And honestly the backs of these watches look really nice.

What I don't get is them insisting on cheap construction techniques for these collabs. Within the Swatch group you'd have both the powermatic range and ETA 2824 to name a few. Stick something like that in with the dressing up (i.e. a maintainable movement), and don't make it out of melted down action man and what you'd have is a fifty fathoms for cheap, maybe £500-750 cheap instead of £350 but a good value option A bit like Epiphone or Squier in the guitar sphere

Hmmm snap on caseback..so you dont have to destroy the watch if the movement need "service"...and also digital and quartz are both normal quartz watches....difference is that on digital the "info" goes directly to a digital screen and in an analog "info" goes via step motor....

I’ve been able to resist the hype of the “MoonSwatch” but felt more pressure get in on the hype when this was announced. Thank you for the video because I had not idea about the movement. When I heard it was automatic I just assumed it was a conventional movement. So much of the appeal in a watch is sentimental so, not being able to service it if there is an issue kills that experience for me. Thanks for saving me the frustration. I think these watches are great for the people they appeal to but would be a nightmare for me.

At the end of the day, watches are awesome. If you know the risks of owning it, and in 4-6 years it could no longer work AND still are interested in it then I say go for it. We all gravitate towards different watches for different reasons, buy what you love and would want to wear.

I like Swatch just fine. Some of them are very handsome watches, and they're a lot more exciting with what they're willing to try than 90% of the watchmakers out there-most of whom are just busily copying each other. I don't think their quality control is particularly better or worse than anybody else in that end of the market. I won't be buying a 50 Fathoms. Too much money for what it is. The 50 Fathoms line are all visually appealing to me, but for that price I could get 3 regular Swatches, and have some real fun with my collection. As far as the disposability-I think any watch in that $300 or under range is kind of disposable. You're getting into the range where the service is more than the cost of a new watch. Who is paying $100-200 to service their $150 Seiko 5? It's not a knock on any of them, it's just the way it is. My dad has been wearing the same Timex since the 1990s, and when the time comes he'll just get a new one. We get kinda caught up with our little treasures, hoping they will last for 100 years, but the truth is most are going to get accidentally stepped on in the dark, or smacked against a car door. It's alright. We aren't forever either. :) Nice video, Mad Watch. I didn't totally agree with everything, but I think you made some good points.

Believe it or not the back of these actually pop off. They aren't like the other system 51 watches which are glued shut. I don't know what that says about whether or not they can actually be serviced but yeah that's the thing.

Completely agree with you, but the movement can be serviced by a watchmaker, they can pull it by removing the crystal. It is not done as it is usually more expensive than buying a new watch, but can be done. This think still does not worth the price. Also i like the fun factor with the 🐌, they know it is not a shark so sounds fun to be a snail. I would buy 1 if they were 50£ I suppose :D

What watch are you actually talking about buddy?😅 This contains a sistem51 which is literally disposable, cannot be serviced. The entire movement can be replaced though by popping off the back cap.

And why would it not be serviced? I have seen 2 different watchmakers servicing 1 in front of me and saying it is possible it can not be regulated by hand but if it can be serviced and chances are it will run. It is not made to be serviced and swatch won't service it for you. Doesn't mean it cannot be ;)

@@StAntonioStefanov It's very similar to a typical LED light bulb. YEs, in theory, you could take it apart, fix it, and put it back together, but it's all put together with none of that in mind and you'll likely break it getting it apart and back together again.

Repeating a comment i left on a post by Britney Pearce, i saw the watches in person. They look the part, but the bioceramic has a gritty, like sandpaper, look. Furthermore they are not readily available Best Regards

How long will the system 51 movement last? In some forms, it will be 5 years if the watch is rotated, 2 to 3 years if worn daily. That is crap for a $359 watch.

Totally agree 100%. Do not join the hype train as these are just cash grabs from Swatch. For around $400 USD, I'd rather pick up a Hamilton Khaki mechanical and use it for life.

Got my Moonswatch after one year. Will apply the same rationale to acquiring one of these. Will buy just for fun, as I’ll never buy a Fifty Fathoms until they make it in a wrist friendly size, which I doubt they’ll ever do. Not sure if Blancpain haven’t scored an own goal here because Fifty Fathoms sounds much deeper than 91m.

Yeah, marketing wise my hat goes off to Swatch, but as far as the watch itself, damn it's so expensive for what it is, you can get a Seiko diver for the same money, to even consider the Swatch to me makes no sense.
