Rue went to read for "Rose", he saw she was a great actress but not for that role, he noticed the "Blanche" hidden in Rue, asked her to read the role, and decided then and there the switching of roles. Rue was thrilled because that's the part she wanted from the start. Betty, not so much, due that she was willing to do "Blanche", she didn't know who "Rose" was. She learned to love her.. Jay Sandrich had a great eye 👏🏼..

Actually, Betty was originally supposed to play Blanche, and Rue was supposed to play Rose. But they both liked each other's characters better. So they switched their characters and scripts. Just a fun fact 🙂

When Rue first read the script, she fell in love with "Blanche", but was told by her manager it was for Betty.. She went to audition for "Rose" anyway because she knew it was going to be a great show.. As she was reading "Rose" for Jay Sandrich, the pilot's director, he saw she was marvelous but not for "Rose", he saw the "Blanche" inside her, so asked her to read "Blanche", he liked it a lot, and knew Betty would be an excellent "Rose", so, then and there, he took the decision of switching the roles. It was a surprise for them, a thrilling one for Rue, not so much for Betty, although she got to love "Rose", she was willing to do "Blanche" from the start.. 💜🌿

She was a great actress.. her character on Maude "Vivian." Was completely different from "Aunt Fran." On Mama's Family. She took the Blanche Devereux character to new heights.

Ive been watching GG since i was 12 and am now 35. This show means so much to me over the years. Its one of my comfort shows i put on when i cant sleep at night. Rue you are definitely one of a kind. God bless them all.

I'm not ashamed to admit that the fact that they're all gone hurts a lot. RIP Estelle Getty (July 25, 1923 - July 22, 2008), Bea Arthur (May 13, 1922 - April 25, 2009), Rue McClanahan (February 21, 1934 - June 3, 2010), and Betty White (January 17, 1922 - December 31, 2021). You will all be missed.
