Many years ago, when I had a valid PPL and access to a Cessna 172, three friends asked me to fly them from Belfast to Silverstone as they wanted to watch The John Player motor cycle races over the weekend. I read up on the rules for landing and take-off at Silverstone and received a letter informing me that landing on the Saturday morning was strictly confined to the hour between 09.00 and 10.00 hrs. I also had to apply for permission to land which was granted. We left Belfast at around 18.00 hrs and were overhead Birmingham by 19.30 hrs. We had to stay in Birmingham overnight and while over the city the ATC controller asked me if I would like radar assistance due to the industrial haze. I happily accepted it and was amazed to see the runway lights emerge from the haze. The following morning I took-off from Birmingham at 0830 hrs and easily found Silverstone and communicated with an ATC controller operating from a temporary caravan. He had us on his list of aircraft who had given notice that they wished to land and we did so with no problems. However, at 10.05 hrs an aircraft appeared out of the blue and the controller advised the pilot that he had no permission to land. The aircraft continued on its approach and I watched in amazement as the controller stepped outside his caravan and fired a red flare. The pilot of the offending aircraft finally got the message and climbed away. The most pleasant moment came when I saw Barry Sheen and his girlfriend, Stephanie, arrive in their Rolls Royce to be surrounded by fans. He seemed a great guy and signed autographs for everyone. I wanted to bring Stephanie over to show her my 172 but she wasn't in the slightest bit interested.

Hi Alan that’s quite a story! I wasn’t sure who Barry Sheene was but thank god for Google! I can totally understand why you wanted to show his girlfriend you Caravan too 😊!!

@@PrivatePilotFlightVlogs Barry Sheen was the most famous racing motor cyclist in that era. When he retired from racing he went to live in Australia. The Sunday Times once did a photograph of him in his underpants and pointed out all of the bones he had broken in his racing career. He'd broken a;most every single one. Sad;y, after all of that he died of cancer.

I died at early 50s I see. Such a loss. Do you still fly Alan?
@alansimpson5964 жыл бұрын
@@PrivatePilotFlightVlogs Regrettably, I don't. My wife gave birth to twin boys and I had to divert all my funds towards their upbringing. However, I'm still crazy about aviation and am constantly looking up at passing aircraft. I was hoping Stephanie would keep in touch but sadly, no!!

Nice vid, why the one stage of flap for take off?
@PrivatePilotFlightVlogs4 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Shorter runway than I’m used to, hot day, and safety!

Private Pilot Vlogs ok just unusual for 1 stage of flap for short field, but I thought a Turweston was like 1200m? But either way your call
