Nice video but who was PIC? Left seat looked out of his depth!! Right seat made all the decisions!

you were 1400qnh before changing to qfe so after qfe you didnt maintain 1400 but climbed to 1500 on qfe. If you had remembered the take 2 mnemonic you would have 1300 on the alt showing on either on qnh (1300msl)) or qfe (1459msl) would have save you from bust at >1500msl after going to qfe as egbw is 159ft msl

Great thanks for sharing and thanks for the honesty, easy mistake to make when operating underneath controlled airspace and the variation between QNH and QFE. Safe flying.

Such a gotcha that one. I have just done an online course after busting Southamptons CTR, not a doddle, I have to say, and not for an altimeter error but I very much enjoyed the one on two Zoom course (the other infringer was a Citation pilot) of 4.5 hours duration and it heavily rammed home altimeter management. Personally, I now choose to fly on QNH into land away airfields, it's not a big deal to have the airfield elevation noted and fly that. Compton Abbas have elected to only pass QNH to arrivals (QFE on request), flying the circuit at 1800 feet and landing at 800 feet. This system is far less likely to put you into a CTR busting situation if you forget to change to QNH before taking off. I think I am now a better prepared pilot after having "switched off" during a long, no flying period, (5 months) due waterlogged farmstrip. Good topic. You have to work at not infringing.

Actually appreciate you posting the mistake. My airmanship back in 1998 in the US was fine but only re-started lesson after a 20 year absence and I'm finding there's a lot more going on and it's hard to keep on top of things, i.e. aviate, navigate, communicate. My comms in the UK is/was dreadful and I remember in one lesson, I went from 1300ft to 700ft to 1700ft when we were in Controlled Airspace "not above 1,500ft". Stangely enough, my (now previous) instructor just sat there and didn't say anything until after the infringement.

Remember Sywell from EMA, landed & took off from there many times in the 90's in a Cessna 152. Once the seat shot all the way back then another time the master switch started smoking. Great airfield though. Hucknall more of a challenge.

I've watched a few of your videos and they're candid and interesting ; we all make mistakes as certified pilots and it's good to see those analysed and shared. I do however disagree fundamentally with the concept of these grey-charter wingly flights, especially if you are not commercially certified. You were probably very close to MAUM on this trip - would you have accepted 3 adult pax if they were family or friends and not 'cost sharing' ? (I know I wouldn't... certainly not on a XC into a relatively short runway) It might have been within the envelope of the POH numbers (just) but the impact on performance and handling at the top of the chart is profound, and the POH figures for a 40 year old aircraft should be treated with a massive pinch of salt. I wonder if your pax were properly cognizant of the risk they were taking on this pleasure trip. Sorry to sound harsh... Safe flying.

So refreshing to see you post videos like this. I feel a lot of the KZbin channels would cut out or simply not upload a flight if something like this happened. A bad landing happens to us all. I once did the triple jump landing into Shoreham years ago... Narrow runway complete through off my depth perception. Safe flying Adam.

Its a tight circuit. People need remember aircraft meaning they are not using train tracks. Yes its important to avoid + sensitive areas. Even few people moan about the F1 tracks. What headings do you use for your downs winds?

As a US pilot I have not crossed swords with QFE (landing datum referenced to the field elevation) but I think your incident calls the whole use of it INTO QUESTION! Better QNH!!

this is a great video for me, who has recently started my flight training on the PA-28. It was a bit of a different model, with the trim wheel being down near the flap lever instead of overhead. I'm loving it so far, can't wait to get my PPL!

Hello Adam . I am back here again. How are you doing ? I remember you saying you had some struggles if i remember correctly, i hope that they are resolved now. Its a tricky time now it really is. You know more than me probably. Have you been flying lately? In case you forgot, I fly a c152 from enstone flying club. I remember you saying that you needed a medical done as you had an operation. But that was AGES ago. Regards, Simon

Just a quick observation you might be able to answer... I noted that (I think) a video camera was attached in close proximity to the compass. If that is the case, is there any noticeable deflection?

This is great, i'm a filmmaker so really enjoyed the production but in my spare time i'm a 'pixel' pilot flying in MSFS2020 mainly in VR so I really like these videos which show rw pilots using radio comms and how they approach cross country flying. You're both excellent pilots to effortlessly fly across the pond, pick up ATC which in parts was hard to hear and have two very happy punters in the back. Great stuff! SUBBED!
