Demolition Dave Drilling and Blasting

Just recently I was working on this site to blast all of the huge rocks and make it level in preparation for the house slab, now I'm back to help the plumbers get some drain pipes and pits in. Nothing easy about this type of job, the mud and persistent ground water made it more challenging.

It would have Gregory but the powers behind KZbin have a serious Leftist bias and I am easily profiled by my online viewing and posting habits that give me a poor KZbin social credit score. Not just me, this is a very wide spread phenomena. Interestingly when this channel was first launched the videos were crappy with poor editing, no commentary and not much of a story and it BOOOMED! Then something happened around October 2018 and the views went flat and very predictable in that all the subscribers got to view but not much promotion to new viewers, It is very clear in the viewer statistics the YT provide. Since this time the production quality has improved so much with slo-mo and time lapse, drone video and much better editing but I struggle to reach the growth figures of the first year.

Winter tires??? It's finally Summer here. Almost forgot my mates down under are 6 months different in seasons. It would be hard to celebrate Christmas in the Summer. Dave love your attention to detail. The smallest error can really mess things up. Size and depth of holes, explosive loads, tamping, delays in blasting caps, etc. Let's not forget going the extra mile, or is that kilometer there, adequate backfill to protect surroundings. All that helps guarantee awesome results. I can still remember the first time I was close to a controlled blast. Charges were probably a meter deep. Backfill was added on top of that. When it went off, there was almost no sound, but there was a thump that traveled through the ground. And the pile of backfill lifted. After it was over, I was trying to calculate just how much energy was released. Moving 5 feet of dirt straight up in under 1 second takes a lot more energy than I could ever produce with a pick and shovel. I can even still remember the smell of exploded Nitro. There must be dozens of other blasters around Sydney and Melbourne. But your satisfied customers are your best advertising. Got hard rock in the way.. Call Demolition Dave. He will turn boulders into gravel... and they can keep the spoils.

Hey Dave -Is the stick just for pointing where the dirt goes next? or does it have other mysterious uses?
@garymurt9112
@garymurt9112 Жыл бұрын
I think he uses it to push the charge down the hole and make sure it's at the correct depth. Where I work at a quarry, they use a weighted measuring tape they drop it in the hole as they pump the amfo in and pull it up and bounce it as they bring it up. They don't cover our shots since it's far enough from any residents. I did work on a jobsite where they had to cover the shot and the blaster did point at where he wanted more cover those holes where deeper to so they did the weighted tape to.

Hi Mark, the stick is calibrated in 100mm increments, I use it to measure when marking out drill patterns, measuring hole depths prior to loading, checking for water in holes, sometimes for carefully checking that the charge has reached the bottom of the hole, sometimes for compacting the stemming in the hole, for pointing where I want the cover and probing through the cover to check how much cover is on the rocks.

@demolitiondavedrillandblast
@demolitiondavedrillandblast Жыл бұрын
Good spotting! The charge in the hole consists of part of a stick of packaged emulsion explosive with a det in it and a small scoop of ANFO, the ANFO is extremely hydroscopic. The screened crushed rock that I am stemming (back filling) the hole with is a little bit wet, and the ANFO can suck all of the moisture out of the stemming and be ruined if there is any delay between loading and firing. The dash of stone dust acts as a dry buffer between the ANFO and wet stemming material. I have had this happen when the excavator lost a track and it took a few hours to get it back on - the shot was a complete failure!

Thanks for the neat video :) I have a question: In the slow-mo of the second shot, I saw the flash from the shock tube you put at the end and I recall in a previous video you said that you put tape on it so that you can confirm that all the shots went off. It just occurred to me, what do you do if the tape isn't broken? I'm sure that doesn't happen often or else blasting would be done a different way to make sure it was reliable but I'm equally sure it does happen occasionally otherwise you wouldn't need to check so I'm curious what the procedure is for that situation, how do you make the site safe and finish disassembling the rock that didn't get cracked on the first try?
@demolitiondavedrillandblast
@demolitiondavedrillandblast Жыл бұрын
First thing after the shot is to check the witness tube(s), if the tape over the end of the tube is not punctured it is oh $h%^$#!... Short answer, kiss the rest of the day goodbye because there is a lot of spade work coming up - examine the slo mo video and try and determine where the blast stopped. When you have a partial misfire because some clown driving the digger did not sieve the covering soil properly to get the rocks out and a rock in the cover cut a signal tube through, you have to uncover it very carefully to fix the fault, when you get close to the rock level (constantly probing through the cover with my calibrated stick), you get out the spade and then the compressed air blow pipe, trying to find the point of failure, having the holes painted make it a bit easier, you find where the shot has stopped because the signal tube is damaged and join in a new lead in line, re cover and re fire the shot. Thanks for watching and contributing

Noob Question. Is there no ground shock at all?? watching puddles and no reaction to blast right beside it.

Very small when it is done properly... but still some people think the sky is falling and complain.

What's the purpose of spray painting the holes? =)

When you have a partial misfire because some clown driving the digger did not sieve the covering soil properly to get the rocks out and a rock in the cover cut a signal tube through, you have to uncover it very carefully to fix the fault, when you get close to the rock level you get out the spade and then the compressed air blow pipe, trying to find the point of failure, having the holes painted make it a bit easier.

Why don't these people just chuck a big pile of dirt on the block and plonk a house on top of it rather than digging that shit out? Site works must cost them about 50% of the build.

In the old days when homes were built on stumps they always did just that, the trend now is to level that site and lay a slab.
