More careful rock breaking on a domestic home site. This time the home construction is well underway and there is a very hard rock up close to the new concrete slab that has to go, the excavator mounted breaker was not effective, the demo saw and operators have worn out and explosives were not welcome this close to the house. That leaves Expando - Expanding Chemical Cracking Agent as go to option for cracking up this large and very hard rock which was followed up by the excavator mounted breaker. Other rocks further from the house were managed using explosives.

Great job. Again. Your “lipstick” comment about your demo hammer vs the excavator breaker reminded me of when I bought my mini-ex (with no prior experience of using one, just general farm and construction equipment use), it came with a ripping-tyne shaped much like a bucket tooth but fatter. After a couple of YEARS using it, and frequently, and eloquently, expressing my displeasure with it’s performance, I had the machine in for a major service at Komatsu and they recommended I replace it. I said “oh, it’s not supposed to be like that?” and he laughs, goes out back a few minutes and returns with a piece about 15cm longer, that represents a two toed ostrich foot with the toes about 10cm long. Turned out mine was worn down to just the socket. Works MUCH better now.

Had the new kid do that to a very expensive hammer drill one of the first times he ever used one. He didn't know any better. I said leave it for later and I will fix it at home. He and boss tried to "fix it", took an angle grinder, they somehow found, and cut the chuck apart in layers until they got to the center. I walked up to the head in two pieces, cut off the drill, with the bit still stuck in the one piece. I hate working with people who recreationally do drugs for fun all the time, things happen like that all the time. Couldn't even buy parts for the $600 drill anymore, so bought a new one. thanks for reminding me of the anxiety of that day, in a better place now.

Harder than a cats head 🤣 I'll have to remember that one given my boofhead ginger like to headbutt you in the temple to wake you up 🤣. Looks somewhat similar to the grey sandstone we get in NSW, finer grains and highly compacted, it does break pretty easy once you can get it to fracture. The piston in the new drill must be harder than the drill rod (or the drill rod is just past it) looks like it wore through the case hardening and started beating up the the softer parent material.

Hey Dave, may be a stupid question...how do you determine what hole fires first? How is it actually accomplished?
@demolitiondavedrillandblast
@demolitiondavedrillandblast 11 ай бұрын
The opening hole is always on the edge of the rock and you try to chose an area that has a vertical face that is parallel to the drill hole so that the burden that this hole has to move (and the explosive load) can be easily calculated or estimated. The next hole can then push its broken rock into the void made by the first hole and so on.

Oh.... you have an APT 155 - congratulations! I understand that they are a remake of the old Thor 75, which had the reputation of being "a mans drill". Generally heavy drills with a long stroke are easier on the user (apart from the weight), and if you find them a bit of a handful you can just drop the air pressure a little and they will still out drill the lighter drills by a fair margin. I wanted to buy a 155 but it was cost prohibitive compared to the CP69 direct from India. The CP69 is a very good drill and very similar in many ways to my all time favorite - the ol Holman Silver Bullet (1955 model). list of bad drills... any light, short stroke (high frequency) drill. Probably the worst I have would be the Holman Silver 3 - what a shocker. I have numerous Atlas Copco RH658's and copies, they are probably the best mid weight drill ever made.

I had heard from someone a while back you have had about 9 separate compressors stolen from you.one after another. There are some very cheap tracking technology's available and its effective. Not sure, but I think there is even a cell phone application you can operate yourself. You could find your stolen compressor and then have the police maltreat and arrest them.. Having a compressor stolen is a big financial hardship.. and in many countries the thief might get sent to prison for 10 years or so.... In some of the united states it would be lawful to defend your life and your property with deadly force. And citizens do so at times. Personally I dont want to use deadly force on anyone unless it was a him or me situation.. . Have the police do it. Less trouble for you

I dont know if its legal in Australia , But Amazon here in the U.S. has tracking devices That work with a phone,used to tag and track expensive stolen equiptment. and they only cost 15. dollars or so... Offhand id say you need at least a few,, and they work anywhere, unlimited distance .. There is a wide variety....... but with all the electronic tracking being done for covid and tracking phones it might be a conflict.. Years ago. I had parked my truck lawfully in the middle of a blinding snowstorm and went into a huge apartment complex, to see friends ,Almost whiteout conditions ., The police found me in about 2 minutes... Thats kinda scary. maybe I should destroy my phone and go to a underground bunker in the mountains..... . Make sure you use 2 layers when making a tinfoil hat.

Feel like you have jobs where you can use the good explosives and you have a lot of throw and you have jobs where you use the goo cuz you need to crack The Rock but you don't want any throw.. have you ever considered using a little bit of gun-cotton or nitrocellulose and just electric match.. I've done a lot of hard rock prospecting and that's what I'm stuck with.. here in the US I can't get in explosives license because a criminal record.. my knowledge and explosives comes from before I had criminal record.. but now the guncotton is just kind of a gray area.. it doesn't do the job anfo.. and if some of the places I end up needing Rock moved is above my head because I'm usually in an old mine shaft a couple hundred feet or at least a mile underground.. sogou doesn't work because I work in wet environments and drilling a hole in the ceiling and putting goo in doesn't work.. no good way to keep it from running out of the hole.. but my drill bit is also you know half and or 10 m m.. and the longest drill that I have is about 8 ft.. A meter is 3 ft 4 in so almost two and a half meters.. the most I end up putting into hole is for jumbo cotton balls.. that have been treated one of like four different ways but the actual is nitrated with nitric acid.... I usually make my batches for the year in the winter time and bats to me is about 50 lb and I normally make five or six batches.. and then I'm good for the year..

Managing the throw is pretty strait forward, it is usually the vibration that is the main concern. I would not be trying to make nitrocellulose but I have done more than a bit of work using smokeless powder like you use for reloading bullets. Thanks for watching Damien.

@@demolitiondavedrillandblast Never heard that one before thanks. About the drill bit maybe a 3mm chamfer on the drill end might prevent this problem

No, this was a very expensive one that is made in Sweden, but it has done years and years of work, I have had the cheap ones break even before the paint is worn off!
