Thanks for this enthusiastic and insightful discussion. 2018 is the year I have rediscovered my love of classics (so far I've read and enjoyed Villette, The Warden and am currently reading Agnes Grey) and I'll definitely be reading Wives and Daughters.

I really enjoyed your discussion on this. I’ve read North and South and fell in love with Mrs.Gaskell’s work. I tried reading Wives and Daughters soon after but it was hard for me to get into it. I think it was because I was still so in love with the characters from N&S that it was hard for me to fall in love with new ones so soon after lol. Although, from what you said, it seems there are such great character in here too. What makes this one a slightly better book than N&S, for you? And it is sad that she didn’t get to finish the book, I like that you pointed that out and your experience with reading it unfinished. It’s great that it would still be so good. Thanks for the video. Might come back to it whenever I get to it.

Thank you! I think it makes sense to have some time between North and South and Wives and Daughters to digest the novels properly. I highly recommend trying Wives and Daughters again at some point in the future. I think I preferred Wives and Daughters to N&S because the social criticism was a little less heavy-handed and more well-integrated with the characters as oppose to the plot. However, I'm pretty sure that if I reread N&S right now I would have a hard time discerning which of Gaskell's novels I prefer.

That makes sense. The social criticism was pretty heavy handed. There were times it was hard for me to follow when it was being discussed through a character. Thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts on this! I’m sure it will be helpful to me whenever I get to Wives and Daughters. I’m looking forward to it!

re the tv series - V good series. I thought Preston was a bit unfairly treated.
