I remember spending the whole Sunday afternoon at and inside St James's two days after Sir Bobby died. I stood in the queue with two Spanish lads who had flown over from Barcelona, both were wearing Barcelona shirts with Sir Bobby on them, they also had flowers. In that queue there were Mackems with their Sunderland shirts on, Boro fans the same and the number of other different strips on display clearly showed just how much Bobby was loved by the footballing world and how far ordinary people were prepared to travel to pay their respects. The whole of the Leazes end eventually was covered in flowers, shirts and messages of love for one of our own but also from football fans all over the world. Anyone who understands football in the North East will know about our rivalry with the Makems yet on that day we stood shoulder to shoulder in our appreciation for man who could transcend our differences. 11 yrs leter its bringing a lump to my throat just typing this. #ripsirbobby #theresonlyonebobbyrobsononebobbyrobson

A true, TRUE legend of England. A man we all admired and loved. As you say, one of your own. As a football fan, it's incredibly special when you get the chance to say "he's one of our own" about a man or a player who is deeply loved.

Whilst working as a match day Paramedic at B’ham City, I met Sir Bobby, now I do not generally hero worship many in football but it was an honour to speak with such a great man. He was happy to chew the fat and he laughed at my pain having to work at B’ham being a staunch Villa fan. He was happy to write and sign a short note to my young son (now in his 30s!) he still has it to this day. He was a man of the people, honest, genuine, a true Englishman and a proud Geordie.

You dont have to be from Newcastle to be a Geordie Stephen, that has never been the criteria ever. Im born and bread in Gateshead and a true Geordie. The exact boundary lines for a Geordie are a little grey, Ive researched it a lot over the years and its very hard to find a true definition that all Geordies would agree with, its certainly far more than being born in a Newcastle postcode. Anyway, we didnt claim Bobby, he may have been born outside of whatever the grey boundary lines are but he worshiped at the same Geordie church as the rest of us from childhood. He loved us as a child and he carried that love with him his entire life, just as his father had before him. We loved him because he loved us, ask Bobby if he was a Geordie and his answer was yes, ask a true Geordie if Bobby was a Geordie and the answer was yes. Only in the eyes of someone who doesnt understand what it is to be a true Geordie could think Sir Robert Charlton CBE was anything but a Geordie.
