According to Jimmy Nail's own account, he had to be virtually ordered by his missus to go along to the audition for AWP - hardly a "passion for acting"! Once there, he made it very clear he hadn't really wanted to come. One of the production staff is said to have described him as "evil". But one of the others said "that's our Oz!" - and the rest is history.

The original writers who wrote the show, were writers for Marty Feldman. Who had cracked Hollywood and felt he needed his old team behind him again, so he had a office on Hollywood bulvd. And while there the writers came up with this show, feeling home sick and in working in another country solidified their ideas for AP. Dick Clement and Ian la furnis, they also wrote the movie visa versa while in Hollywood.
