If anyone wants to learn more about Michael David Fuller ( Blaze Foley ), I cannot recommend anything more highly than the book Living In The Woods In A Tree by Sybil Rosen, the girl the song If I Could Only Fly was written both for and about. Even were Ms Rosen not a phenomenal writer ( she is ), simply the story of Blaze Foley would be engrossing enough. But the subtlety, passion and insightful nuances of life, love and discovery, of dogged determination, of loss and regret with which Ms Rosen tells the tale is simply spell-binding. If interested, Google the title. There are many places it can be found. It really is a one-of-a-kind book.

Blaze drifted from my radar some years ago, but recently while researching Philip Donnolly , Blaze resurfaced . TVZ & Blaze had self-destruction buttons that were jammed in with insecurities and simple alcoholism. When you get addicted you leave all your future behind you and your hopes and dreams on a liqueur store shelf. We all got crazy in us, everybody, but most manage never to let it take hold or even know about it.... but for some of us... crazy has always been on the outside and we keep the real person hidden deep inside, except for maybe one avenue out .... that was in writing songs for those guys

Is it just me or some of his singing, especially on the low notes, is pretty similar to Frank Zappa's? I don't know if Zappa would ever have admitted to be inspired by a country musician, and maybe this is pure coincidence. But the funny aspects of Foley's lyrics could even have inspired Zappa's great songwriting... Maybe?

Too bad no one has footage like this of Gary Allison. However the Gary Allison's and Danny Webb's of the world just fall through cracks. They get remembered as that drunk injun and that guy who kept my trees beautiful. Gary had some amazing songs, but the police shot him down unarmed. Danny still has beautiful songs you could hear if you happen to be around lake Bastrop at some point and know the right folks. Just sayin fail to include these two in any telling of the other's stories is a major historical lapse.

They were there, and neither you nor I were. That's the diff. As for your rhetorical? Totally irrelevant. Listen up grasshopper. I recall seeing Townes as he opened up for Jerry Jeff in NYC back around this time. I know that I was attentive, had a table right at the lip of the stage and enjoyed a terrific night of music. Do I remember anything of either's performance? Fck NO. But I was there. Just sayin' . .....Enjoy what's in front of you here and now. “Life is like music for its own sake. We are living in an eternal now, and when we listen to music we are not listening to the past, we are not listening to the future, we are listening to an expanded present.” - AW
