In this satirical take on Westerns, crafty railroad worker Bart (Cleavon Little) becomes the first black sheriff of Rock Ridge, a frontier town about to be destroyed in order to make way for a new railroad. Initially, the people of Rock Ridge harbor a racial bias toward their new leader. However, they warm to him after realizing that Bart and his perpetually drunk gunfighter friend (Gene Wilder) are the only defense against a wave of thugs sent to rid the town of its population.

The actor who played Mongo got the part after he read the script and saw Mel and another member of the production in the studio commissary. He waked up to Mel's table, slammed his fists into the table and roared "Me Mongo". Mel looked up and said, yes you are Mongo. Welcome onboard.

This is one of those rare movies that does the satire right without glorifying the ideals of the time. Just showing how backwards people were back then. Not to mention it is just downright HILARIOUS!!!
@armastat
@armastat 4 ай бұрын
being alive during that time I can confidently say THESE were not the ideals of the time. younger people completely misunderstand how it was back in the day concerning racism and all that. this was within 10 years of the equal rights act and everyone was still celebrating that fact, and those that were not were hiding it. when it comes to racial tension? to day is far far more intense than the 70's was. Some people have dragged us a giant leap backwards.

Blazing Saddles is the true western spoof comedy! Sometime after 1971’s Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Gene Wilder moved on with his friend Richard Pryor to star in this comedy. The purposeful and intentional anachronisms thrown all around in this Old West setting brings out the Looney Tunes-style gags! Mel Brooks is a filmmaking genius.

This is one of the Greatest Comedies Ever, So Now Go Do That Voodoo That You Do So Well - The scene with Bart pointing his gun at himself was inspired from Brook’s childhood when after getting caught of stealing some gum he pointed his water gun at himself - Western Star John Wayne declined to make an appearance in the Movie but after reading the script thought it was so hilarious that he said that he would be first in line - Gene Wilder pitched the premise of Young Frankenstein to Brooks on the set - Mel’s Son Max was born during the Movie’s writing process - There was going to be a spinoff tv series which the pilot is called Black Bart was filmed but not picked up

This is up there with the Monty Python movies, it makes a bold statement and is goddamn HILARIOUS at the same time.... and this feels like the sort of era that the meta humour started to take off. 1. Mel Brooks played the Governor, the Indian Chief and the round-up thug with the aviator hat. 2. Mel Brooks doesn't just break the 4th wall he shatters, steps on and grinds it into the ground. 3. The preacher/Liam Dunn also plays in Young "Frankenstein" as Mr. Hilltop. Madeline Khan also had a smallish role in it. 4. Imagine how much fun this was to make.🤣🤣🤣🤣 5. The line, "You know morons" was ad lib by Wilder. Little's reaction was real. 6. The guy that was supposed to play Jim showed up the first day drunk so he was let go. Wilder agreed to do this movie for Mel Brooks only if Mel would direct Young Frankenstein for him. 7. Richard Pryor was supposed to play Bart but he was going through his addictions at the time and they thought it wouldn't be a good idea. However, he did some of the writing. 8. Jim still has his popcorn from the theater. Movie suggestion "Young Frankenstein" with Gene Wilder PS: This was made when people still weren't afraid to laugh and have fun.

If you haven't seen Space Balls, Young Frankenstein, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, History of the World: Part One yet, those are very good comedies. The loud lady in Rock Ridge was the wife of Dom Deluise who played the director near the end of that musical act that the Blazing Saddles cast and crew bust into. When the WWI germans come out on stage and start singing and dancing with Madeline Khan that pop sound was one of the rifles flying off the stage and hitting one of the light bulbs (you can see it if you look at the bottom of the screen). Richard Pryor co-wrote this movie and was supposed to play Bart but ...... cocaine is a hell of a drug, so he was replaced.

Mel Brooks got a lots of notes from the studio executives to take things out such as the fart scene, everytime someone said the N-word and Mongo punching the horse. Brooks promised them "It is out!" but afterwards he'd throw the notes in the waste bin, as he had the final say on the movie accordingtohis contract. He did cut one thing that was too dirty, though. After Lili von Schtupp said "It's twue! It's twue!" Bart would have said "Sorry to disappoint you but you're sucking on my arm.".

I recommend THE PRODUCERS (1967), Mel Brooks's first film and a classic, which also stars Gene Wilder. It's about an unscrupulous Broadway producer (Zero Mostel) who, with the help of his mousy accountant (Wilder), attempts to pull off a scheme to make tons of ill-gotten money off a guaranteed-to-close-in-one-night disaster, aka a musical called SPRINGTIME FOR HITLER. Brooks won an Oscar for his screenplay, and the movie was later turned into a hugely successful Broadway musical; it is also my personal favorite of his movies. "WILL THE DANCING HITLERS PLEASE WAIT IN THE WINGS!!! We are only seeing SINGING Hitlers!!"

8:35 - The joke nearly everyone misses here, is the horse being hung.... it's a kind of obscure reference to "Screw you, and the horse you rode in on" line. So, basically, they are executing the guy, and the horse he rode in on. 17:30 - Maybe I'm reading too much into this, but the term "Johnson" is also vernacular for "dick"... which is how everyone in town acts towards the new Sheriff. But given what I know about Mel Brook's sense of humour, I fully believe that this was NOT a coincidence. 23:55 - The end part of this was completely improvised, so Cleavon Little's laugh was genuine, as he wasn't expecting Gene to say, "You know... morons." Especially not so "dead pan". It legitimately cracked him up, which is why it was left in the film. 34:00 - Randolf Scott was a very famous "Western Hero" (actor) at the time.... similar to John Wayne... hence that line. 35:55 - For reference, Jesse Owens was the black track star who literally humbled Hitler's "Master Race" during the Olympics in the 1930s, prior to WWII. Jesse soundly defeated the German team in the Olympics hosted by Germany. 37:05 - Many people (these days) don't know that the Irish were actually treated worse than black slaves at the time. While their "indentured servitude" supposedly had a "time limit", it was quite often moved to further in the future if they failed to perform their duties (meaning, it could last until they died) to the standard set by their "owners" (at their discretion). Hence the "We'll give some land to the N's and the C's.... but we DON'T want the Irish!" line. But of course, this being a Mel Brooks movie, he just HAD to push the boundaries and include EVERYONE..... So "Woke" it hurts, right? (no, we didn't have that term back then..... but tell me it doesn't apply here). 42:15 - The "random guy on the street" refused to leave during filming, so he was given an "appearance contract" where he wouldn't be paid for his appearance, but would allow the studio to use his likeness in any promotional material and appearance in the movie itself. My wife and I had to sign a similar "contract" when we were on location for the filming of "24 Hours to Hell and Back" in order to be in the crowd filmed that day. We got no compensation (monetarily) for it, but I was happier than a punk going to prison just to be seen in the episode. Plus, I got to shake hands with Gordon Ramsay after filming was complete. For me, it was well worth it. I'm sure for this guy, the feeling was pretty much the same, given that he is now immortalized in a Mel Brooks movie for all time. 44:30 - A movie that Mel Brooks also made, that is kinda similar in structure to this one, is "History of the World: Part 1", which I *HIGHLY* recommend! Timothee, I really hope you will do it in the near future! Like with this one, some jokes may go "over your head" due to societal changes... but as someone who lived through that era... I'll be more than happy to help explain some of them to you (for context purposes, of course). I hope you both have a wonderful day!

This is such a great movie that makes fun of racism. The actor who plays Lyle (Taggart’s right hand man) was uncomfortable saying the “N” word to Clevon (who plays Bart). Clevon took him aside and said that it wasn’t his words that it was just a script and he felt better after that. Mel Brooks plays three characters in this movie: the governor, the Jewish Indian Chief and an aviator standing in line waiting to join Hedley Lamaar’s gang. Mel Brooks was asked once in an interview if he could make Blazing Saddles nowadays and his response was that he couldn’t make it back then. He did have to really fight with the higher ups to keep a lot of the off color stuff in. One thing is he did actually kinda remade this movie recently. He did an animated film called “Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank” instead of color racism it’s cats and dogs. 13:59 one thing about this movie is Mel Brooks never says the “N” word. 14:37 he’s wearing the same outfit that the guy who was hung with his horse was wearing. 22:57 this is the first time the fart sound was used in film. Mel sat in the editing room with the editor recording different fart sounds. Poor unsuspecting people walking by the room was brought in to “contribute” to the sounds. 23:53 Gene Wilder adlibbed most of this including the “Morons” part and Clevon’s reaction was real. It caught him off guard. 24:27 the yes/no was in reference to what side of the bus to pass on. When this came out it was a big thing about passing on the left side of the bus and not the right side. You didn’t see the board during the council meeting behind the podium. It had all the residents names and all were last name “Johnson”. 28:27 Mel Brooks said this is the dirtiest song he’s ever written. 29:55 they cut a part out of this part. He was supposed to say “you’re sucking on my arm”

I'm amazed that not many folks mention the "Governor's" name, "William J. LePetomane." In the late 19th century, there was a French Vaudevillian by the name of Joseph Pujol, better known by his stage name, "Le Pétomane," or (closest translation), "The Fartsy!" Pujol's act consisted of "farting" various songs and sounds to a precision unmatched by anyone. It is said that Pujol would wash and irrigate his colon several times a day to avoid any "fragrances." Fitting considering some of the other content in this film. Brooks was right though, given how many westerns where they show all those cowboys eating all those beans and drinking all that black coffee. I think he was proving that theory.

The phrase "Wide Wide World of Sports" is from the ABC Network sports montage covering global sporting event highlights from the Olympic Games to pro golfing. It was popular from the late 60's through the early 80's. The opening song in the film was written to be sung by balladier Frankie Laine, who was known for singing in films about the old west. Mel Brooks intentionally withheld the true subject matter of "Blazing Saddles" because he wanted Laine to perform the song. It was only after the singer signed to perform the theme song , Brooks divulged that the film was a parody of the old west. Brooks hired a good portion of the cast , who were already established actors in the western film genre, to star in this film. Randolph Scott was a famous actor who played the upstanding hero in Westerns from the late 1920's and up to the early 1960's before retiring from acting.

There's a deleted scene that was included in the TV version, where the governor shows up to the fake Rock Ridge between its construction and when the bad guys arrive in order to schoomze with the voters, and he's so stupid and oblivious that he doesn't realize he's schmoozing with bobbleheaded cutouts. There's so much good stuff going on in this one. For every broad, obvious joke there's little stuff that you might not notice. One of my favorite blink-and-you'll-miss-it things is that when the guy in the wheelchair is getting hanged, there are two ropes. One noose is around the neck of the man, and the other is tied around a knob on the wheelchair. Some of the jokes fly past younger viewers entirely. Nobody these days knows who Hedy Lamarr was, so they don't get all of the Hedy/Hedley jokes. And nobody knows who Randolph Scott was. But for every joke lost to time, there are timeless ones that are still really funny. And of course it helps that in addition to brilliantly spoofing westerns, this is also one of the most bitingly satirical takedowns of racists and racism ever filmed.

Did you get the " 1 flavor " sign when the town was leaving? I think you got most of the jokes. Some jokes were of the times (60-70's) so not too relevant now.

I follow you both and have for some time. Great tandem reaction! Much of the movie deals with things no longer common. The Brama bull that former the football star (forgot his name) rode into town as Mongo had Yes on the left and No on the right which was common on big rig trucks in that time, indicating you should pass on the left (Yes) and not on the right (No). (Also note: This movie, as do so many others then and now, does more than just parody existing films, mostly Westerns. It also mocks racism with lampoon, and even includes a lot of farce ... nonsense that is funny specifically because it makes no sense in the circumstance.) Cheers!

Hmmm, i wonder, since you've just seen this movie now, if you'll take upon the task someday of watching the animated kids version of this movie called: Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank in which it also has Mel Brooks in it as well as Michael Cera, Samuel L. Jackson, and Ricky Gervais. It might be interesting for you. ^^

Of note; in the scene where everyone is running out the studio gate onto the street, a random person walked into the shot and indeed didnt know they were filming. They didnt have the budget to reshoot the scene AND it was funny so they left it in.😀

Your lady has great taste in music, man. She's a keeper. This is one of my all time favourite comedies. They don't make movies like this anymore. Tropic Thunder had blackface, but other than that, it wasn't a racially or culturally defining commentary on anything. I always say, more Blazing Saddles, less Birth of a Nation. Birth of a Nation was a 1915 silent movie where the KKK were literally the heroes and black people (played by black actors in blackface) were the villains. Sometimes I think today we've forgotten the difference between the 2. When did mocking racist people become the same as endorsing them?

There are many name jokes used in this movie. Gabby Johnson was copied from George "Gabby" Hayes who played a very similar role as a sidekick in many westerns, Gov. Le Petomaine was named for a French entertainer Josef Pujol who performed in the early 1900's as Le Petomaine. His talent? Controlled farting. Hedley Lamarr: Hedy Lamarr was an actress during the '40s and '50s who also invented a radio controller that became the basis for GPS, Wi-fi, and Bluetooth. Lily Von Shtupp: Shtupp is a Yiddish word that is used as a crude euphemism for sexual activity. Randolph Scott: an actor who played the hero in many westerns. Jesse Owens: a black track and field athlete who won 4 gold medals in the Berlin olympics that Hitler wanted to use to demonstrate the "superiority" of the Aryan race
