Fun Fact: Jim Henson squeezed into a specially designed metal container complete with an air hose (to breathe), a rubber sleeve which came out of the top (to work Kermit) and a monitor (to see what Kermit was doing), and positioned himself under the water, under the log, under the Frog.

The Muppets are always so much fun and this is one of their best productions to date. From the puppetry and humor, to songs like "Moving Right Along" and "Can You Picture That", and the heartwarming moments towards the end, it's all just pure magic and talent. I hope you check out some of their other movies soon. Most are pretty great.

This movie is actually a classic that nobody knew would be a classic. It’s pretty impressive how this is the first movie with The Muppets. This movie pretty much kickstarted a bunch of classic Muppet movies like Great Muppet Caper, Muppets Take Manhattan, Muppet Christmas Carol and so forth. Even though this movie is probably not talked about as much anymore, I still find it as one of Jim Henson’s grand achievements.

The ending shot with all The Muppets singing the last verse of The Rainbow Connection, contains all the Muppets that have been in The Muppet Show so far (it was filmed in the middle of shooting of Season Three) plus Sesame Street, Emmet Otter's Jug Band Christmas and even The Land of Gorch (from SNL, right before first season of The Muppet Show was broadcast in the US). 150 puppeteers were standing in a 6 foot deep and 17 foot wide pit, with 137 of the muppeteers were from The Puppeteers of America. Among the puppeteers were filmmakers John Landis (the director of The Blues Brothers, he puppeteered Grover) and Tim Burton.

Technically, he played Charles Dickens in one movie. Gonzo - "Oh, hello there. I'm here to tell the story. My name is Charles Dickens." Rizzo - "And I am Rizzo the Rat... wait a second! you're not Charles Dickens!" Gonzo - "I am too." Rizzo - "No! A blue furry Charles Dickens who hangs out with a rat?" Gonzo - "Absolutely!" Rizzo - "Charles Dickens was a 19th Century novelist! A genius!" Gonzo - "Oh, you are too kind."

The rainbow connection is the best song ever existed
@christopherwall21214 ай бұрын
Gonzo's solo song, "I'm Going To Go Back There Someday", almost wasn't in the movie at all. Story goes, when Paul Williams demoed it for Jim Henson, Jim thought it was fantastic, probably best song in the picture. There was just one problem: they didn't have a scene for it to call back to in the script. So they wrote in the scene where Gonzo has that misadventure with the balloons, where he discovers a love of flying amd stunts, and we get a surprisingly introspective and vulnerable moment from the most eccentric Muppet (and that's saying something)

Great reaction! 😊 And Merry Christmas to you and to Clariss! 🎄 Out of all of the Muppet movies this one has always been my absolute favorite. The songs have always been the best part of this movie. With "Rainbow Connection" as my favorite song. 36:13 - 36:36 I grew up with this movie. This scene with the Big Animal used to traumatize me as a kid. LOL! Fairly recently I did see a behind the scenes picture of the big Animal head that was made for this scene. I hope that you decide to watch the rest of the Muppet movies. At least the next two: "The Great Muppet Caper" and "The Muppets Take Manhattan". Looking forward to your next reaction. 😊

My favorite thing about the Muppets has to be that the Muppets themselves are actors. Whether Kermit is on the hand of Jim Henson, Steve Whitmire, or Matt Vogel, Kermit is usually playing a character named Kermit, but also has played Bob Cratchitt and Captain Smollett. And it feels like he's been the same actor since The Muppet Show, and the same goes for Fozzy, Gonzo, Miss Piggy (though she had a lot of evolution in the show itself) and all the rest.

Kermit: I guess I was wrong when I said I never promised anyone... I promised me. I can't get over how deep that is. The realization that before you can live for anyone else, you have to be able and willing to live for yourself. Jim Henson always wanted the Muppets to have a deeper meaning beneath the bad puns, dynamite and boomerang fish.

The Muppets are a different approach to puppetry. There are three main types. Rod Muppets, like Kermit and Gonzo, have the puppeteer using rods to control the arms. Muppets like Fozzie and Rowlf the Dog require two puppeteers, one to operating the head and one hand and a second to operate the other hand. The third is the full body Muppet, like Sweetums and Big Bird. There is an actor in the costume that can move around. Big Bird was done for many years by the late Carroll Spinney on Sesame Street here in the United States. He couldn't see what he was doing through the costume. What he had was a special harness with a video monitor so that he could see what to do. Everyone who does the Muppets watches monitors, so only their characters are seen, not them. In doing so, they need to think backward when performing. One hand Muppet is done differently than the others. The Swedish Chef was originally done by Jim Henson and Frank Oz. Jim did the head while Frank did both hands as those are not gloves but actual hands. Kermit riding the bicycle in the beginning was carefully done marionette techniques along with the front of the bike being pulled by someone on an oversized tricycle. Outside of the Muppets, Jim Henson also had a creature shop that pushed the boundaries of puppetry. The Jim Henson Creature Shop is still in operation. Among the films they did include The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, along with several others.

As it turns out, this film really is "sort of approximately how it happened", as it is a loose allegory for Jim Henson's journey from Mississippi to Hollywood, with film exec Lew Lord (as played by Orson Welles) representing Lew Grade who gave Henson his big break. Pretty sure our Jimbo wasn't travelling by helium balloon or dodging frog killers tho (but don't quote me on that).

At the showdown with Doc Hopper, Jim Henson (Kermit, Dr. Teeth, Rowlf, Waldorf and The Swedish Chef) makes a cameo as one of Doc Hopper's men (the guy with the full beard and cowboy hat) on the right side, while Frank Oz (Miss Piggy, Fozzie, Animal, Sam the Eagle and Marvin Suggs) is the guy on the left with moustache, glasses. Oz also cameos as a biker who beats up Fozzie at the El Sleazo Café.

I grew up watching The Muppet Show on TV; as well as seeing this in theaters upon release, as I was a huge Muppet fan. Still am, actually. Jim Henson wanted to continue his Muppets after the TV show ended; so this movie, The Great Muppet Caper, and The Muppets Take Manhattan, as well as Sesame Street Presents Follow That Bird, all came out before he started work on The Dark Crystal or Labyrinth. In fact; 'Follow that Bird' would be the last time Henson would get to voice Ernie before selling Sesame Street to The Television Network. Kevin Clash; who voiced many characters in many of the Henson movies, stayed with Sesame Street until his run-in with the law on inappropriate behavior with a minor had him removed as the voice of Elmo.

The joke with drinks on the house is "borrowed" from the Droopy cartoon The Shooting of Dan McFoo, and the Fork in the Road is another Droopy cartoon (forgot which one). There are plenty of Tex Avery-esque gags in The Muppet Show and a lot of Muppet productions.

I believe the TV show was 1st in order to get people familiar with the characters. For 100% certain the Muppets were on TV before this, they date back to black and white TV. Always look for cameos in these things too.
@mevb9 ай бұрын
Yeah, Jim Henson's first Muppet series were Sam & Friends in the late 50's and early 60's, starting in his teens along with his then future wife Jane Henson (née Nebel). He then appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show and did a number of Muppet TV specials such as Hey, Cinderella!, The Frog Prince, The Muppet Musicians of Bremen and The Great Santa Claus Switch before collaberating on Sesame Street with John Stone and Joan Gantz Cooney (it was them who came up and lead Sesame Street, it was just The Muppet skits and characters than Henson and his team provided, Carol Spinney was hired as Muppets were needed for the street segments, neither Henson, Frank Oz or Jerry Nelson could be used for the street segments as the different schedules would clash with each other) before making two pilots for The Muppet Show: Muppets Valentines Day and Sex and Violence and on the side Henson and crew was doing The Land of Gorch sketches for SNL which wasn't popular because of the scripts of SNL's writing staff didn't go well with The Muppets' style (both Henson and his guys and the SNL staff were frustrated by the other, even John Belushi saying "Mucking Fuppets!"). Then finally Lord Lew Grade through David Lazer bought the concept of The Muppet Show. About The Muppet Movie itself, Jim Henson wanted to push the envelope further during The Muppet Show by making a movie about the muppets so he pitched it to Lew Grade and the rest is history.

Kermit on a bike is done by having Kermit placed on a bike, with thin strings attached to a crane from above. For the close ups when he reacts to the Doc Hopper Frog Legs logo and the upcoming truck, Jim was halflying on a dolly underneath the camera with Kermit and the bike handle visable in shot.

In the opening shot of Kermit playing the banjo in the swamp, Jim Henson was in an underwater tank with oxygen tanks attached it so he could breathe, with a monitor in front of him so he could see what the puppet was doing, and his hand was in Kermit who is on the log on the surface. For the wideshots, when Kermit is strumming the banjo, a puppeteer on a rowboat behind the camera radio controlled Kermit's left hand (Muppets tend to be lefthanded as the right hand is inside the puppet, while left hand held the rod for the left puppet hand when they played string instrument, as the muppeteers are usually right handed).

There are very few characters in the list of every single person in this movie that aren’t famous celebrity actors from the 70’s. One after another after another.
