After finishing the initial Bleach anime run and season 1 of TYBW with the knowledge of what we know about Isshin now, Isshin was always low-key training Ichigo to always be on guard as a shinigami. Though it was played for laughs, Isshin definitely knew that eventually Ichigo's abilities would emerge and was always testing him making him key his edge from getting dull during the "peace time" between conflicts in the show.
