I just found out that Grimmjow wasn’t originally supposed to last this long in the story. Apparently Kubo and his editor at the time both agreed that killing off Grimmjow early would be a waste and I’m so happy that it came to that. I love Grimmjow

Grimmjow only ate pieces of them, yes. Even a small piece being eaten off of a Hollow in the Adjuchas state will halt their evolution entirely (can't get regress, but can't get stronger either), so to Grimmjow they were not only attempting to boost him to another level but actively giving up their own ambitions to do so.

I think now that Bleach has long since ended, it's a lot easier for people to comprehend everything because they can take the story in all at once. I believe it was a lot more difficult to fully understand how masterful Kubo's writing was back when Bleach was still being serialized. Needing to wait a week between each chapter for YEARS coupled with breaks every now and then, it's natural to forget a lot of details. Especially smaller details, and with how Kubo writes, those small details REALLY end up mattering. I gained a much larger appreciation for Bleach after re-reading it compared to back when I was reading it weekly.

There's a reason two of these chapters are called Jugulator*s*. Plural form of Jugulator. Literally meaning "someone who goes to the throat' This is a clash of not just Hollows, but Espadas, at least in spirit, like that other Espada said. It's not just a question of power level, but of what their power is, and how it is used. That's what terrifies Orihime. Hollowification is called hollowification for a reason, it brings shinigamis closer to Hollows. But Ichigo didn't give up his humanity, and that's why he won.

TBH all arrancar are as much human as any human, they are just a bit traumatized from having lived as hollows until then, it is not their nature any longer but the nurture of living in hueco mundo for years as hollows is still there.

Love how you called so much of Grimmjow’s personality here “cute” and “sentimental”, as that was clearly how he would seem if he wasn’t a hollow! The interpersonal relationships between the hollows is IMO the coolest and most interesting parts of the Arrancar arc. How they keep walking the line between savage and dutiful, emotionless but also living by instincts. Grimmjow being based on a panther makes the animal parallels very obvious, but actually I believe that most of the arrancars (if not all of them) are based on an animal by design. It’s definitely an eat or be eaten world out there, despite all of them unconsciously and desperately not only holding on to their humanity but actively SEARCHING for it (as Vasto Lorde class are the most humanoid of the menos grande)

A fantastic fight that absolutely deserves its position as one of the series most iconic. I really love the parallel between Grimmjow and Hollow Ichigo that is shown in this battle as well. They both illustrate how the very nature of Hollows is so closely tied to the concept of having to be the strongest you can be in order to survive. You must become the King of your own world or be devoured. Great stuff overall!

Ichigo's concept of saving someone doesn't stop when he gets them away from the people that threatened them - it stops when he proves to the people that threatened them that if they try to come after his friends again - he can and will stop them - that they won't get away with it a second time. That is the driving force behind all of his actions, and I love that about his character.

btw the anime extends Grimmjow's backstory and we learn that an adjuchas stops gaining power from eating hollows if even a single bite is ever taken out of them by another adjuchas and their evolution potential is added to that of the first adjuchas that ingests their flesh. There is also an implied long bit of time between Grimmjow biting D-Roy and the rest which is why D-Roy was so much weaker than the others.

First things first, The whole inner monologue from miss (you still don't know her name) about Ichigo and Grimmjows fight looking like its a battle between two Espada is still one of those peak raw lines. Orhime's reaction may show us what the mask seems like to humans also how many Soul Reapers would react to hollowification while that line shows that the top of the line version Ichigo has can seem just like an Arrancar, a beast that has tamed itself. Also yeah I do remember the whole "consuming a part of a Menos class halts their evolution between its ranks, cant fall back but can't progress" sounding a bit more total than it really is during the convo in the manga back when it was only source that describes it, databooks do tell us it legit only needs to be a pretty small amount eaten by another hollow to work really showing how hard even maintaining the middle stage is. Was also a good move from Grimmjows gang who confirmed they cant evolve more beyond Adhuchas yet Grimmjow did win the 0.0 something something 1 chance to even have the ability to maybe reach Vasto Lorde to maintain their state and give Grimmjow a pretty big meal even if its only bits of them. Grimmjows release is also one of the relases that best shows how they bring out the old Hollow within yet still very humanoid as the loss of the mask should bring, some others revert enough they feel like less perfect Arrancars and others have some weirder ways of handling it like number 9 to say just enough.

One of my favorite things about the Arrancar arc is how it uses a similar structure to the previous Soul Society Arc (an ally is captured, Ichigo launches a deadly infiltration to save the person he cares about) but accomplishes different ends. Soul Society shows us how rules and hierarchy can distance people from their humanity, resulting in characters like Byakuya and Aizen. The Arrancar Arc illustrates just how much Hollows are Human. All the while, Ichigo has to assimilate the powers of both, increasingly threatening to distance himself from the people he's been fighting for all along. It's great stuff.

And another lense that you can view the "i fight to protect those who i love" vs "you like fighting as much as I do" thing is that as someone said in another comment; it's called hollowfication for a reason. Ichigo has used that mask so much that it has gone through 3 design changes, his time limit keeps increasing and the smug man that is white Ichigo hasn't said a word in a while, be that because he's consolidating his strength (how would you do that? Idk) or the scarier possiblity if you were to ask ichigo, because maybe they're merging towards a middle point? A 3/4ths of the way point? Who knows? But I bet that if you sat down with Ichigo for a talk there's one possibility (that doesn't invalidate the other 2 if that happened to be the case) that I think would be even scarier for him, that maybe on at least that subject matter that he and white he agree it's just that he's been too busy protecting people that he didn't realize he's always been like that, remember how he got against renji the first time they fought before Urahara even began the process that brought out the mask? And if that's a thing then in what other aspects is he like his hollow (albeit made reasonable by his humanity and other goals and ambitions)

Everything that his hollow side has, Ichigo does as well. Sadistic? Ichigo was taking pleasure in breaking some dude's skull against the cement in the first chapter, in general Ichigo can be pretty sadistic while in a conflict with someone he doesn't respect. Ichigo also likes to fight, part of the reason he still has the hair that causes him soo many problems is not only because it is a memento from his mother but because he actually wants the conflict, he likes to fight. The whole "king" stuff? Have you seen how fucking coocky Ichigo is? Everything Zangetsu is, Ichigo is as well, this is because Zangetsu is not some external demon or alien symbionte, Zangetsu... at the end of the day... is Ichigo. a very biased reflection of Ichigo that enfatices some aspects of Ichigo over others, but at the end of the day, its still him. Fuck, the reason Zangetsu even possesses Ichigo is because Zangetsu is every bit as overprotective as Ichigo is. He doesn't want Ichigo to be hurt, so he takes control to fight in his instead and he doesn't want to destroy Ichigo's pride so he does the little game of the "evil hollow taking over" so that Ichigo doesn't have to lower himself to accept help... Zangetsu looking like Ichigo is not a fucking coincidence, Zangetsu is Ichigo and Ichigo is Zangetsu.

A144: "I'll let you bang me!" is what she would have said. Judging by Loly's character, this is the kind of thing she would've said to save her skin. When a part of you as an Adjuchas is eaten, your growth stops, but it's also your regression that stops. Basically: If a part is eaten, you stay right where you are. Grimmjow eats a piece of his fellow Adjuchas not only to gain strength from them but also to keep them as Adjuchas. The female Espada isn't thinking Ichigo feels strong like an Espada, she thinks Ichigo feels more like a Hollow than a human or Shinigami.

You're correct: as a Hollow Grimmjow ate parts of his Fraccion both to further empower him and to keep them from regressing as per their wish. When a Menos has even a part of them eaten they cannot progress further.

this was one of the defining battles in bleach, it was a perfect storm for the anime and manga, and Kubo delivered, but the high doesn't stop now, and not even Nnoitra can pull this arc down, you won't believe what's coming, on another note, it's fun how well Kubo used spanish as a theme for this arc, specially with the antagonist now being called "Arrancar" which means to forcibly rip off or take something off when the arrancar are beings that ripped off their mask in order to evolve, that among other few details have always been neat IMO.

But a big part of this battle was that Grimmjow was right, Ichigo does love fighting it wasen‘t just his hollow side, someone who only fights for their loved ones would not enjoy fighting, Ichigo does enjoy the fights tho even if he diden‘t want to admit it before this fight, like yeah he fights to protect his loved ones but he also does it cause he likes it, thats what irked Grimmjow about Ichigo, the fact that Ichigo is trying to deny part of himself and not being 100% true to himself
