While Kubo revealed that James is the real name of the sternritter, I don't think Mask nor small James is the real body. In a way their power is actually probably more similar to Starrk where the original body split part of his power into 2 bodies. Mask being the embodiment of the ideal hero and the small James representing the fan and also carrying the original name. The way small James regenerate is way to odd to be considered the "real" body and Mask did state that both James and him are one and both needs to be killed for them to truly die. We also see in the anime that when Yhwach absorbed James, it is Mask's burnt out body that turns to reishi and returns so small James also can't be the one true body.

Welp in the anime, Yhwh (or is it Yhwch) he says “James’” name, nor Mask’s when acknowledging his/their death. From what I understand about how their powers work, how Mask explains it actually explains it perfectly. While James was the original body, Mask serves as his ability to remain in the world, or his tie to it. James on the other hand both serves to heal, or more accurately I guess recreate, Mask whenever he gets damaged or somehow destroyed

I really loved the added scene on the intro. Because as someone who has served in the army, it's such a monumental piece of Information. A map with the locations of all the allies and enemies can offer so many tactical advantages like avoiding the enemy, finding wounded allies, setting up locations for strategy and medics and most importantly morale. Just small things like this makes the whole arc feel like a war and highlights how much of a valuable player Mayuri is. Truly the MVP of the war along with Urahara

A better reason as to why they don't use their powers would've been because of Central 46 and their typical detrimental authoritarianism and lack of common sense. Knowing them, they probably still consider the vizards criminals for being unwilling pawns of Aizen. Yamamoto most likely put in a good word for them which led to the condition that they could return to the Seiretei so long as they don't use their masks, the "symbol" of their so-called "alliance" with Aizen, something that Hiyori would be the most vehemently opposed to in general since they're still technically punishing them over something that wasn't even their fault to begin with.

I just don't understand the amount of episodes that Pierrot planned for this arc, the number is too little. On top of that they are adding new scenes (I'm glad they are doing it because the Manga was rushed) but it comes in spite of many other moments. This is maybe the 4th or 5th moment they have cut from Renji or Rukia, and Rukia is like the 2nd main character of the Series.

@@rmanileavell5271 Considering the pacing of the last chunk is what most manga readers with complaints took issue with and it's where Kubo himself admits he had to hurry it up more than he'd have liked (due to health issues iirc), it kinda makes sense that it's where the most additions will be happening. And as fast as these fights are going, this is basically how they were paced in manga. It may not have felt that way reading week to week, but binged straight through, it is indeed quick. This last bit is more for the other comment, but nothing was actually cut from Renji here. It's just what the fight was, meant to show how far above Renji has come that he makes such quick work of it.

Is that Jame’s power? I’ve always interpreted more as reshi(or whatever the soul reapers are made of) understanding and manipulation. Like every time James cheers,he’s then able to beat whatever opponent, but the next one proves to be difficult as well. It’s make sense then too why Kensei was confused and pissed that Shuhei and the other two lost and was able to put down mask so easily. James(either through observing and sending it too mask and saying “superstar” or just the power) then cheers on mask and now kensei’s bankai doesn’t work, but then water and fire are enough to hurt him from Rose’s bankai? That’s why I’ve always viewed it as him getting a beating, Jame’s sending him the download of the enemies reshi through the cheer, then you either have to use a strong attack then you just showed or you’re basically screwed. It’d also explain how Renji was able to beat him. He used Shikia to handle him for awhile, Jame’s dies then he uses Bankai to kill him. Anyways, not the best at explaining through text, but let me know if I’m way off EDIT: I also think this because we see sternritters like U who’s also whole thing is to understand others reshi

No no no, under no circumstances is it ever a good idea to tell your enemy what your powers are, regardless of what you think they might or might not do. You don’t take that kind of chance in a war where your comrades are constantly dying. Especially since after telling him this, Mask immediately countered it and it costed Rose the battle. Mask still might have won due to James still being alive but at least it wouldn’t have made Rose look dumb. Rose may have thought James was dead but that doesn’t take away from the fact that Mask showed that he could overcome his Bankai without James’ help. Honestly, the only character who has a valid reason to explain their abilities is Shunsui.

Mask had reason to believe that he was about to be killed. I think that any captain-level fighter when faced with certain death would choose to ruin their ears instead. Deaf beats dead, especially when facing an existential threat looking to exterminate everyone you know and love. That said, not everyone would be cold blooded enough to do it immediately with no holding back or hesitation. And here Mask knowing that he could be healed was absolutely an advantage.

1) Renji's comment about superstar will burn out eventually cause it's what they seek is too meta for me. 2) Mask as a superstar obviously relying on James's passionate cheering but when he released his voltstandig , he became too proud and arrogant superstar , which as result didn't care enough even burning his own loyal fan by his action. 3) After James was no more to be seen, Mask also didn't care anymore about hero or justice persona. It was a subtle notion on how a certain superstar only trying to look good only in front , in the eyes of their fan , but not behind them. 4) Without fans ,a star is nothing. Also it much easier for a fan to bring up a star than a star to seek out a fan

rose made the bigger one but id still say kensei made a mistake here, in that he just went back into the fight after seeing his opponent just instantly recover and seemingly get stronger from his attack, which should indicate to him that his power alone might not be enough. he shouldn't have been more careful, maybe wait out a bit to observe his opponent, or regroup with rose to coordinate their attacks at the same time instead of just him trying.

The change in how Renji gets his true bankai is such a good fix. I always hated how in the manga it just was "Why would my zanpakuto be lying to me about its name this whole time?" "I don't know, but I can just give it to you anyways." Learning your zanpakuto's name is the most important aspect of being a shinigami, and skipping that would ruin everything.

James' story could've been that he had to retire as a pro wrestler, who was the most popular guy at the time (a superstar) and with the wrestling persona Mask de Masculine, because of an injury and he felt betrayed that his fans all but forgot about him for the next guy. When Ywach gave him a Schrift, he split himself into 2 (similar to Starrk and Kenpachi), one was a younger version of him in his prime with all the power and the other one was an aged version of him to act as his fan(s) who would never stop cheering for him to get better and get back into it. So, technically, they're both James

I haven't seen anyone talk a counterpoint about james being the sternritter and masque is just a manifestation. My headcannon is that James is indeed the sternritter as stated by Ywhach, however, James is the real name of Masque. Similar to how wrestlers use aliases instead of their actual names. James power is basically to manifest a support summon ("James") that buffs and heals him. That's why regardless of being annihilated, Masque said that "James" could reincarnate since they are one (Sternritter's power are etched in their souls from my understanding) meaning he can just resummon "James". Another thing, that star beam thing may be Masque's version of an arrow, albeit a suprpowered one

Personally I think the Vizards are just banned from Hollowfing within the Sereitei which is why Kensuke and Shuhei left it to train and for Mashiro to put on her mask Either that or only the Captains aren't allowed to because they can't have the faces of the court guard using the powers of their enemies Also I think people come down too hard on Rose #1. He did kill James immediately and with all current knowledge he had available Mask could no longer heal at that point #2. Rose said plugging your ears wouldn't do anything to stop it (after Mask did the thing) #3. I think people don't understand just what destroying your ear drums does it also completely destroys your sense of BALANCE along with your hearing with who Rose had scene as an exclusively physical combatant doing such a thing without a means to fix it would still ensure Mask either wouldn't risk it or it wouldn't matter because he'd be exponentially weaker without balance and potentially unable to reach Rose at all

oh the Hollow Masks would have DEFINITELY made a difference. remember that it was already established that Quincies are severely weak to Hollow Reiatsu. so much so that the Bankai stealing devices IMMEDIATELY malfunctioned the moment the Captains' bankais gained the smallest of hollow reiatsu which implies that Hollow Reiatsu just outright cancels Quincy bs. having Kensei use his Mask and then punch Mask(this is weird) with his hollowfied bankai would have done not only more dmg but would have probably infected him with hollow reiatsu so he wouldn't be able to use his schrift properly or at the very least negate some of his power up since, again, Hollow Reiatsu > Quincy bullsh!t this is the same problem I have with Shinji vs Bambietta. if Sajin's huge a$$ bankai was fast enough to catch up to a flying VSD Bambi then surely SURELY Shinji with his mask who could probably use sonido would not only be faster than Bambietta but also cancel out her reishi bullets with cero since the reishi bullets NEED to make contact before turning something into a bomb but unfortunately Shinji just stood there, like an idiot, watching Bambi transform and not even moving from where he was standing instead of, I don't know, summoning his mask (which is almost instantaneous btw and quite literally faster than the Volstandig transformation). Kubo, I love you I do but having the Vizard Captains NOT use their Hollow masks in a literal WAR against people who are WEAK to Hollow Reiatsu is... and I'm not even gonna sugar coat it, stupid. -_-

I love Kubo too but yea there was a lotta stupid decisions he rolled with in the 2nd invasion in general imo. I'm only critical n all in this manner bc Ik he's capable of better. easily one of the most frustrating things in the 2nd invasion is he how chose to utilize the visoreds & I'll never truly get over it lol

The reason why they didn't use Vizard Hollow mask was because they don't want Aizen experiment to succeed by putting Quincies down. Its the warriors pride. The only reason why they use hollow masks during Aizen villain era was to mock Aizen himself by turning his experiments against him

I need source for that. because not only do I NOT remember anyone stating this. there's also the fact that in the fight against Gerard later on, the rest of the Vizards who decided to remain in the human world used their masks agains him. so going by your logic, only Kensei, Rose and Shinji have this "warrior's pride"... don't get me wrong, I am very well aware that Bleach characters are the epitome of "pride" but if what you're saying is correct then Shinji wouldn't have used the shineiaku(hollow tablets) so his bankai wouldn't be stolen (even though technically he doesn't need it since he already has hollow reiatsu inside him anyway). idk where you got this "reason" but it's completely baseless. unless of course you can prove me wrong by citing a source.

Tbf to Rose, it would be a little out there to consider that an enemy would pierce their own eardrums. If Mast didn't have a full heal available he would be at an insane disadvantage since his equilibrium would be gone. Also I don't think Hollow powers would have gave either of them the win
