Statistically speaking, either you are shooting from within two yards of the basket, or you should be shooting threes - and the NBA is gradually moving in that direction. That's because the percentage of hits from 3 yards from the basket is about 45%, but its still 39% from three point land. That gives you expected points of .9 from a short jump shot, versus 1.17 from three point land. So if you can't work it in close, pump it out and take an open three.

I find it's a pretty good sanity check for decision making in 4th down situations; what does your opponent want you to do? If he doesn't want you doing something, you should probably do it :D. 4th and 1 is overwhelmingly favorable to go for it in every level in football...and Madden downright babies the offense so it's even more so there lol.

Blakestefer The expected value of an attempt is almost always greater than punting, despite that some attempts fail. You are turning the ball over either way, so you're trading a chance at converting for 30-40 yards in most cases. Possession is (usually) worth more than that, unless you're the 2000 Ravens whose defense was so much better than their offense that it actually changed the favorable decision mathematically sometimes :p.

man the high school I went to needs this guy. consistently mid tier every year and they have plenty of talent. the coaches I had ran the team like it was a college system and we'd consistently get beat by the crafty teams that would run riskier plays. even though a lot of coaches think about running a system like this, they're all too afraid of getting ridiculed and losing their job. all it takes is one season that was better than the last to change the perception of it.

My friend did a college paper on this as well. He is an actuator now (a person who uses extremely complicated formulas to analyze and determine risk assessment and policies for insurance companies). He determined it depends on the plays ran and by the statistics the players have and in how many games they have played. It also depends on similar numbers on the defense. However if every player had average statistics he determined that past that teams 39 yard line, on 4th and 5 or shorter, with a run play (assuming 2 of the previously ran plays were runs) has a 67% chance of working and a screen play has a 80% of working. A slant route 69%, a hook route 63%. Assuming field position is a secondary objective to scoring, and time of possession a third, you have a 87% chance to have more time of possession if you go for it on 4th and 5 or shorter from your own 38 or closer and only attempt field goals 4th and 3 or greater from at least the 12 yard line. You have a 75% chance to have better field position means. Also, given there are no turnovers from either team, you have a 72% chance of scoring more points per possession, and a 77% chance of winning the game. Again assuming both teams have average stats at every position. I applied this tactic to madden and i was 153-6 on madden 25 and 50-2 on madden 15. I would always play as a team with a good secondary and a mobile quarterback. Before i did this i was a slightly above average madden player (334-296 on madden 11). Also always going for 2 doesnt match the statistics of a team that seldom goes for 2 41% vs 54% because the other team better prepares for 2 point conversions, and only about 10% of an entire playbook is usually allocated toward 2 point plays, making it more predictable. Although assumed the same philosophy is applied to onside kicks, the field position you forfeit is worth the chance of getting the ball (27%) which is mentioned correctly in this video.

CoDWiiPS3Gameplay I understand, I just don't see it working. If you're on the opponent 40, that's too long for a field goal on 4th down, so you go for it instead of punt. If you don't make it, you give the other team a short field to operate with. And give elite guys like Luck, Brady, or Roethlisberger a short field time and time again, and it's game over for your defense. And if you onside kick every kickoff, you're probably only going to get the ball back a handful of times. NFL offenses are too good to consistently be given short fields if you keep failing on 4th downs instead of punting, and giving them onside kicks. Going back to Madden, I never punted as long as I knew I was better than, or equal to, my opponent. Once the settings got put on the toughest level and every yard mattered, then yes, I did punt on 4th downs. Because field position is can be used like a weapon, and pinning an opponent in their own 20 can be as much of a weapon as scoring points if you're a good coach.

He might have analyzed NFL games, but the key thing to remember here is that in the NFL, fake punts, fake field goal tries, and even some onside kicks, are almost always a SURPRISE. That means that it's so far out of the ordinary that this is why it works. But you won't see an NFL coach repeatedly try a fake punt within a game, because the defense immediately learns to watch for it. Can you imagine an NFL team knowing that your team is "going for it on 4th down" almost every blessed time? That would NEVER work vs elite-level defense and special teams. If it became part of a team's plan to do what this guy does, it wouldn't work, because the element of surprise is the only reason those plays work on the NFL level to begin with. It only works in high school because the disparity in talent is very large, both from team-to-team as well as within your own team. The players are young, inexperienced, thinner, shorter, slower etc. That isn't the case in the NFL.

This reason this system works is because of the defense. Like the film said, it is in the top ten ranked in the country. My point is, it's so easy for the coach to run his offensive, and special teams setup due to his teams talent alone. I have seen not so great teams make it to state due to an amazing O and D line, but the rest of the team were sorta average. This guy is frickin awesome. Fearless and awesome. Love his white about how if you're going against the numbers you're gambling. There was a Soviet ice hockey coach from the 60s named Anatoly Tarasov who revolutionized the game by focussing on puck control and retention. The same has been done by Pep Guardiola in European club soccer: if the other team doesn't have the ball and you don't give away possession, you're more likely to score and therefore win. Kevin Kelley is just a smart football coach. I hope he gets a chance someday to coach at a higher level!

I wish we could of played them. That trick play crap would of been the death of them. You can't get away with trick plays against a disciplined defense. We had one of the best defenses in the country with 3 players within the top 10 in the nation in tackles. I give all the credit to our defensive coordinator. He was one smart cookie and is D1 defensive coach at a great program. If you try that reverse crap they kept running we had a outside linebacker waiting on your ass. I think it would be fun to play "for" him, but Relying too much on a trick play against disciplined defenses would end up poorly for you. Don't believe me go watch NFL football and see how many reverses tend to work out.

To be fair, at the time this video was made, he was actually doing a pretty good job at Arkansas, and it looked like he was turning things around. Then the wheels completely fell off. As an LSU fan, his teams beat us two years in a row with way less talent to work with. He had his moments at Arkansas, just couldn’t sustain it and got lazy in recruiting.

this actually makes a lot of sense. you get to use the 3rd down to shorten up the yards to go til the 1st down for the 4th down. anything longer than 3rd n 3/4 is usually an automatic pass while a team will definitely run the ball at least one of the 1 of the 1st 2 downs, 90% of the time. this gives you the opportunity to mix it up on the traditional 3rd n 5-8. and especially if youre passed the 50 bc how many high schoolers van accurately place the ball inside the 20 or consistently punt the ball 40 yards? not many and anything less than a 35-40 yard punt is just useless

I like this way of thinking. I saw some analytics once that made a good case that it's more important to have a good glove at first base than a good bat. Anyone can catch a ball that's thrown straight and level, but a guy who can scoop the ball out of the dirt and prevent a few E5's and E6's each game is going to prevent more runs for the other team than a big bat will produce for yours. Good gloves are also cheaper than good bats, so you'll have more money to spend on the mound.

This guy is smart and the numbers don't lie. I coached middle and high school ball for a while. I hated to get scored on by punt or kickoff returns so the goal was to kick the ball out of bounds every time and the scoring stopped. Those are demoralizing plays that can cause teams to give up. Plus I hoped that they would kick to us because the kid I had returning kicks was good for a TD on a punt or kickoff or both on nearly every game.

Thomas L. Either out of bounds or as close to our sideline as possible, never to their sideline. If it goes out of bounds then there's a 10 yd penalty and the ball starts around the 35 or 40. Most kids if not taught properly will try to field the ball near the sideline and they have less of a chance of getting a good return.

Coaching has so much to do with the game and I think this man is smart in what he is doing. my football coach ran the same system for every qb which was a read option type offense. problem was for a previous qb he was incredibly fast and the team went 8-3. put in a new qb who isn't as mobile the team goes 1-10. too many times the coaches are unwilling to change to adapt to the player which is not coaching.

Brennan Swanson most are, but it's the ones willing to listen and respect every athlete the same is when you get the best out of players. my coaches killed my love of the game cuz they couldn't coach and our team was constantly losing. they're attitude actually killed my love to play the game. freshman thro junior year I played for the guys on my team. senior year I had lost all respect for my teammates because of a biased system by my coaches and honestly did not want to play. my junior year we went 1-10 while we went 6-5 senior year. yeah that's a good season senior year, but we had so much talent, but I knew not everyone played with all their hearts so I stopped as well.

A 4th and 19 on your own 5 is one of those outliers. usually outliers skew data, but eliminating that data, you improve the your conclusion. So by eliminating the 4th and 19 on your own 5, you are even more likely to come out on top.
