Bleeding Fuel System | Perkins 4236 | 1982 JCB 3cx | White Cab | Lucas Cav Injector Pump | MF 168

Bleeding the fuel system. The engine showed no signs or hesitations, she just stopped dead in her tracks. Dirty fuel filter. No where open to get a quick replacement during lockdown so washed out the old a had her up and going in a few minutes. More time on my hands than usual so took a video. It might be helpful to someone else in similar trouble.

The Perkins 4.236 is a diesel engine manufactured by Perkins Engines. It is rated at 67 PS (49 kW; 66 bhp) ASE (DIN), and is widely used in Massey-Ferguson tractors, as well as other well-known industrial and agricultural machines, e.g. Clark, Manitou, JCB, Landini and Vermeer. The logical explanation for the designation 4.236 is as follows, "4" represents four cylinders, "236" represents 236 cubic inches (3.9 L), which is the total displacement of the engine. This logic can be used for most of Perkins engine designations. Bore and stroke 98.4 mm × 127 mm (3.87 in × 5.00 in), for an overall displacement of 3.9 L; 235.7 cu in (3,863 cc).

Thank you for the video! I borrowed a New Holland bale wagon with the Perkins from a friend. I changed the fuel filter, but had no idea where the bleed screw was on the injector pump. Watched your video and you pointed right to it! Worked like a charm!

A common problem with the Perkins fuel system was the thimble filter in the Transfer pump housing. This often got overlooked but when bleeding the hydraulic head an experienced fitter would see the lack of fuel and low pressure behind it. When I was doing all this dirty fuel and suction faults were most common problems along with the stop solenoids if fitted.

Thanks for sharing. Looking for a video clip showing how to bleed & prime a '73 Perkins 3 cyL. Helping a neighbor w/ his, he replaced the 3 rusty fuel lines from the pump to the injectors, but now we can't get it to hit a single Lick. Manual pumped the lift pump, but it wasn't moving a lot of fuel. Any advice much appreciated. Thanks again, - take care.

I am no expert on this. I have the 4236 myself so know it well. If the lift pump is doing nothing then make sure the pump is not the problem. Turn over the engine as sometimes the pump doesn't work great depending on the cam lobe position. Also check that you have a flow to the lifr pump, ensure the tank is not full of gunk.

@oddjobbob8742 It's my neighbor's, he got it running by using 2 batteries so it would crank/turn over faster. Can't remember if he wired them in series or parallel, I'm thinking parallel. I'll text him & double check. Talked to him Sunday & he said he's been starting it w/ just 1 battery, but it's not been starting as well, so he might need help w/ it again.

Hi thanks for the video, if i just replace the fuel filter and clean the fuel sediment bowl before the filter i don't have to prime the injector pump and the injectors right??? I only have to fill the filter with fuel using the lift pump right???

Fill the filter with fuel by hand, screw up filter and finish filling with the lift pump. Have filter bleed screw or banjo loose to allow air escape rather than pushing it up the system further.

Personally , I like to put injector cleaner in the primary water sep after changing the paper filter .

@@jpsmith6975 if air is pushed further up the system, then bleed at injector fittings? also do you bleed injector pump on the top of the face or the bottom bleeder, you pointed at both in the vid, very helpful thanks!

Great to learn from your vid that widely applied engine of Perkins. I have a Landini 7500 with that same engine and CAV high pressure pump. It runs beautifully but after randomly 5 to 20min it drops dead. Restarts immediately and runs fine for another 5-20min!!! Did all the standard stuff from replacing low pressure pump, filters, to even clean the inlet filter desperately for finding any cause. Can only draw the conclusion something is wrong in the CAV high pressure pump. Expected a non-return valve in the fuel return outlet socket but it seems empty. Is that important for the operation? Any suggestions? Even second hand once are > 500€ ...

Fuel starvation. Check filter in both lift pump and injector pump, make sure all air is purged.

@@monstertrucklt I'm not sure cause it's been some time now, I believe that there was a filter near the fueltank tap that the owner had either not replaced or not properly cleaned. Vage. I asked him before and afterwards the story changed.... So after all fuel shortage by dirty fuel system 😞

@@Ernie-Tech Mine did similar thing, tank cleaning window was put on with lots sealant, clogged tank output randomly. Currently won't start, one cylinder will fire instantly after starting to crank. But not others. Tank cleaned, separator without crud, handpump good, mesh clean, fuel filter new, mesh in pump new, hydraulic head in pump new. Valve clearances good. No clue at what to look next :D

What is the issue if you bleed it, run engine, use the machine for 20 minutes, runs great, then I turn it off, then try start it 1/2 a second later, and no way will it start, needs bleeding all over again, wtf ??? How can it all go wrong in 1/2 a second, I turn off, try start it instantly, no go ?????????????????

Any luck ? If you leave to cold will she start ? Could be a range of things from starter speed to injector wear.

I'm going through everything at the moment, took fuel tank off, absolute full of rust and sludge, a blend of diesel and rust, took top of lift pump off, same, packed with same sludge, fuel filter the same, never seen one as bad, should I check the gauze in injector pump too? Is it easy to dismantle and put back, it's a forflift, so it's kinda awkward to get to

@@isaackent2355 do it methodically from start to finish, tank, lift pump, sediment traps, filters, injector pump. Otherwise you are chasing your tail.

@@leinadj.7948 Mine got to the point it won't start at all now, in the end the pump needed a full rebuild, when I opened up pump it was totally full of gunk, I didn't refit it yet, but it cost 350.00 to rebuild it.
