Thanks for the info. On bikes (and my Honda quad) the hand brake was just front, foot brake rear. Saw the dual bleeders in the back, and figured it just wasn't a floating caliper. Early disc brakes had separate left and right chambers, until they invented the floating caliper. You explained it. Thanks!

Before starting this project yes the rear reservoir would spill over with the hand MC applied. I got back to after the last comment and the air bubbles just about went away, I moved on the bleeding the rest of the hand MC system without doing the rear MC yet. One thing strange is after bleeding the fronts I would glance at the rear and a little stream of bubbles is traveling in the tube to the bottle I have catching the fluid, note at this time all 3 bleeders are closed. Is there some strange vacuum happening between the tube and bottle collection or is the new bleeder not closing? I marked the fluid level and will check if anything leaked later on.

When u gravity bleed isn't all the air out of the lines?

Do you have A video on how the brake line going from the master cylinder to the box under the plastics? I have A xplorer 400 in with no brake line from master cylinder, and would like to know the proper routing of the line. The block has the two front brake lines and the rear brake line, just no line from block to master cylinder.

Quick question. I have a 1999 Sportsman 500. I installed new calipers and brake pads. Went to bleed nothing comes out at all. If I insert something up into the supply line to the calipers from the reservoir is solid black. No clear brake fluid at all. I was looking for a way to clean out the supply hoses. I removed the old tubes trying to get them to drain. No luck. Any thoughts?

I can’t find any videos for my 2014 scrambler xp1000 for bleeding the whole system. It’s got linked breaks but dual calipers in the rear and both calipers only have a single bleeder. I’ve got no air bubbles, clear fluid, no rear brakes. It seems like there’s a bleeder on the rear master but it’s tiny. Like a size 6mm tiny.

Just put a new caliper on a scrambler, started gravity bleeding with the rear and kept topping off the hand reservoir. I’m getting steady fluid with tons of bubbles. My question is, is an excess of 30 minutes of the happening normal? The only reason I quit is I ran out of brake fluid to put in. Closed the bleeder and left fluid in the reservoir. Timeframe sound normal?

These can truly be a pain in the butt to do especially with the dual circuit rear caliper. One thing to make sure of is that when you are pumping hand brake that you don’t have fluid in foot brake reservoir raising and lowering or spilling over. I’ve seen many aftermarket rear calipers have bad seals for the dual circuit and they’ll never bleed up. Also even just replacing one caliper all calipers have to be bleed out.

When I try to bleed the rear brakes the fluid bakes up into handlebar reservoir and cones out of the vent tube. I wonder if I need to replace parts of the brake system

That’s a class sign the rear caliper is bad. The hand brake controls front and rear, foot brake only does rear. There’s a seal inside the piston chamber of the rear caliper that goes bad and causes your issue.

@@montemania198210 I looked online and the rear caliber is actually pretty cheap. I’m guessing it’s better to replace the caliber instead of rebuilding the caliber.

Can anyone help me . I have a 2002 Polaris scrambler 400 and I was riding yesterday and I just felt the bike dragging on the ass and so I stopped the bike and I got off and I looked through the rear caliper and it was smoking a little bit I took it that the brakes were obviously locked up what could cause that I’m sure there’s numerous things but does anybody know . Also I was deep in the wood and their was no way I was getting pull out or getting a truck to it . So I road on it and it freed up but would lock up a bit . ? Thank you

Hi. Usually the two main issues is the foot brake master cylinder sticking and the rear caliper binding up. I’d start with replacing them.

You don't have to toss it. It will be fine for up to a year as long as you keep the bottle sealed. It absolutely does absorb moisture though. As it does so, the boiling point of the fluid gets lower and lower. DOT 4 books at 446f but after a year it's down to about 295-300. If fluid is dark it really really should be replaced. As more water gets held in suspension, your brakes will feel more sponge like as it warms up then turns to vapor. This can be extremely dangerous because the pressure of expanding vapor in the system can cause your brakes to lock up unexpectedly "vapor lock".
