In this video I'll start tearing down my crawler Jeep. What once was a beautiful clean XJ has seen better days and therefore it's time to strip it down and start over. I'll be removing the expensive parts and anything I want to keep and junking the rest. This is jus the first video of the teardown but today I'll remove the disc brakes, rotors, axleshafts, diff cover, ox locker, carrier, ring and pinion, yoke, and prepare those parts to go into the Hope floats Jeep.
How to remove a ring and pinion.
How to remove a pinion yoke.
How to remove a carrier.
How to remove an axle shaft.

i might be one of the guys talking smack bout buying yer old vehicles - got a 2004 wj overlander - my custom cut phantom 4j humvee halfcut body, 8pt roll caged, and only 2.5" cowl hood to reduce heat for dual hot air intakes, piped when mud bogging out the back of scoop... lots of extra fab - but not enough upgrades, just started build 2018 - its looks good with the built not bought attitude, but time for ordering trail equipment and axles, new tires since after rock crawl, 2 trail rides, 1 car show, 2 parades, 1 mud bog 3rd place finish = tires not same size anymore and several missing tire lugs....this is all yer fualt... with all the jeep hype - now im an addict !!!!! wj rare breed...

@BleepinJeep A full wrap cost upwards of $3000 but I was able to do all the work myself so it was free. I would recommend painting it because it will last longer and maybe doing a partial wrap if you want a logo or something on it.

Hey matt!! watching your video and hearing you talk about setting up a RP, its very simply actually. Just buy two sets of bearings when you go to setup a diff and use emry cloth and sand out the bearing enough to fit off and on easily and then you can setup the dif without having special tools. Get your preloads, backlash and gear pattern good with the proper shims and then install the new un-sanded bearings and your good to go. You will then have setup bearings for whatever axle, I have a toolbox drawer full of them. Just throwing it out there, seen you do some neat stuff already no sense in putting limits on what u can do.

Those plastic cleaning discs are meant for use on Aluminum Parts like Cyl. Heads or Intake manifolds.Since they are less agressive they won't bite into the Aluminum as much as the abrasive discs do.
@Steve_Logic
@Steve_Logic 9 жыл бұрын
18:26 it's called a bristle disc I use that on a daily basis at work for removing old gasket material, works great...btw its primary use is for cleaning up machined aluminum parts that you need to hold tight tolerances on without removing very much (if any) material
@Riptides99
@Riptides99 9 жыл бұрын
I think 3M sells these under the Roloc name, or at least the ones I've used which were for cleaning up engine internals and mating surfaces. They prevent abrasive materials being impregnated into aluminum parts which could later be introduced into engine internals destroying the bearings.

Hi Matt! Just wanted to start off by saying thank you and the rest of the Bleepin Jeep crew for taking the time to make these great videos. I wanted to ask you a few quick questions...I noticed you said in a previous video that you dont like the 99+ cherokees...wondering why...reason I ask is because I have a 90 2 door 4 liter 5 speed ive had sitting for a YEARS. I just recently started looking into what I want to do to it. After watching Tim's green jeep vids I decided I wanted to go with a 4.5 inch long arm..I then contacted Greg from Rock and Road and chatted with him for a bit and am going to get something set up in a few months I hope...so that takes care of suspension...but as far as the engine goes I was thinking about going obd2 from a 01 xj or tj so that i can install the Banks Sidewinder Turbo...any thoughts?

i think the issue was with the shims under the carrier bearings.. not enough stock under there and the carrier was in there too lose, you just pulled it out with minimal effort it usually requires a couple pry bars a medium amount of swearing and some scratches you pretend arent there if theyre really stuck thats when the strap around a couple ring bolts and a second jeep traveling at 10mph comes into affect :D

Have you had any issues with D30 ring and pinions (besides the chipped tooth)? I have heard once chromolys are installed the next weak point is ring and pinion. I went threw 3 boxes of tissues watching you disassemble the front axle lol.
@bleepinjeep
@bleepinjeep 9 жыл бұрын
MossyOak83 Hmm, well I am running larger tires than anyone should on a D30 but this is only the second ring and pinion that I've broke, although this one was just chipped so I think it may have been a defect or something. Usually U-joints are my weak link.

When you say the pearl blue is going to be a "Buggy" can you elaborate on that..? Seems like if you are going to build a buggy it would be more practical to start with a tube chasis and build something similar to a rock bouncer. Also, id be VERY interested to see you build something like a well built still DD-able XJ. Something with either a 60/60 or 44/60 setup, 37s or so, and still full bodied with either a hybrid or interior cage.

Ok so if I were to get an xj as a daily driver and upgrade it a lot like the hope floats jeep how would you do the insurance. Because if it gets totaled but you spent like 15k on it the insurance company only takes in the value of what it's like stock right? So would you just keep the stock parts so that if insurance decides to take it you can just buy a new xj and put all the old stuff back on? I want to buy an xj when i turn 16 but i don't want to spend a ton of money on it and loose all of the money i spent in parts when i (inevitably) crash it lol.

BleepinJeep the bearing caps are specific to the axle. they line hone the bearing services just like camshaft bearing caps and push rod bearing caps. Don't use those ones on the other axle
