In this video I'll show you how to remove a c-clip style axle shaft. In this particular video we are working on a rear dana 35c from a Jeep Cherokee. But many rear C-clip axles will be very similar if not exactly the same.
You'll need at least 2 quarts of new gear oil after opening your diff: amzn.to/2dt1KC8

Here is the shaft retaining pin: amzn.to/2dbpLLU

Man, that was about as perfect a lesson ever could be: jus enuf information without giving unnecessary info; camera shots were perfect; and the patient way and through explanations you gave were spot on. Thank you. Now I'm gonna go and replace the broken axel shaft on my '96 GC.

you don't have to remove the bearing retainer, just use a 1/4 inch drive with a universal joint adapter. Or better yet a simple wrench.

I used a Chraftsman 1/4" wrench for the pinion shaft retaining bolt. The box end is 12 point. Then you don't have to take the cap off for ratchet clearance. Great video as always.

Hey Matt, Thanks for taking the time to make this video. It has really helped me understand how C-clip rear end axles come apart. I have a ‘95 Cadillac Fleetwood with a GM 10 bolt rear and I’m going to have to replace the wheel bearing seals on it. I’ve worked on Ford and Mopar rears with the bolt on axle retainers but this will be my first time working on this type of rear. This has given me the confidence to get in there and get it fixed.

Great video! This really reinforces an axle job I had a chance to see an older buddy of mine do several years back on an older chevy pickup truck. Fortunately, he worked at a tractor repair shop where he had access to an A-frame lift to hoist up the pickup rear end and made the repair go quick. I also remember him working with different size shims to take out the correct amount of play in the differential. Very interesting!

If you do make sure to touch on leaf and coil spring removal - a lot of smiths use both of those (coil is a little annoying because you have to straighten it). Downside with leaf spring is a lot of the junk leaf you can get will have small cracks that only show up once you head it up (look like little black lines).

Matt with Bleepin' Jeep dot com, you have a gift. I don't know how anyone could explain that more clearly or correctly without any BS. I'm installing a Spartan Locker tomorrow, understood the whole gig except what to do to allow the axel to move in so the c-clip could be removed. Never made the connection with the spider pin holding them out. Respect, bro. Thanks for making my day! (oh, and answering my question... and teaching me other stuff I didn't know!) Matt, I have a lot of sideways movement suddenly, I can slide the axle shafts (both move together both directions) sideways about 1/4", the pinion backlash doesn't change when it's one way or the other, I keep reading this movement is normal, but it didn't have it before and I don't see how it can be normal (35c, superior truss, Alloy USA shafts, Tru-Trac, 4.88 Motive Gear R&P). Thanks in advance for any input.
