pull off radiator cap rev your engine at 3000rpm for 15 seconds then suddenly remove foot from gas pedal if antifreeze sprays out high you have a blown head gasket.....no tools necessary......just advice from a 40 year mechanic who doesnt want you to buy tools you dont need. this video was like a commercial for the tool he was using.

How I always check for a blown head gasket is, I take the radiator cap off then hold the probe from a gas analyzer near where the cap goes with the engine running. If there is any hydrocarbons it's bad. The testers with the fluid that changes color don't work very well if it just barley leaks.

southseapirate1 I explained everything. Very simple test. If there is any hydrocarbons at all in the radiator that means combustion gas is getting into the cooling system, Which you should never see.

You can test for a blown head gasket by pulling the radiator cap off (when it is cold) and start the engine. It will bubble like boiling water or You can usually smell the harsh fumes. Anyway my 2003 dakota blew a gasket after overheating.

Several ways coolant can mix with oil or oil mix with coolant. The presents of exhaust gases more like means something is cracked or the head is wrapped or the block, than leaky head gasket. All the signs of contamination will show itself at the highest point, the radiator opening. All the guessing could only be reviewed after its all apart. Product is a money maker.

You should've clarified that small amounts of smoke/steam are normal, as a car that has just started will run rich/burn off condensation in the exhaust, but a plume of steam is a bad sign.

You should begin the test cold, because EARLY failure of head gaskets can leak when cold, but seal when the engine has heated and the metal expanded.... but yes, you should continue to test until the vehicle reaches operating temperature and the Tstat is open.

Another easy way is to open your hood, start your engine, then grab the top radiator hose and squeeze the air out of it. If it begins inflating like a balloon, "TA-DAAAH!" Open your checkbook, 'cause it's gonna cost ya.

Got a 2010 challenger 5.7 when I left work my temp gauge red lined started seeing white smoke coming from the front of my car the smell is sweet smelling... Popped the hood and saw that the coolant was boiling and coming out of the reservoir...after letting the car cool off I checked the cap and tightened it down after taking it off to put more coolant then drove to the store which is 4 minutes from my place started red lining again and boiling so I'm going out on a limb here and saying head gasket or could it possibly be the cap? What do you think?

I have an oil (mostly) floating on the top of the coolant (not much) in the radiator & reservoir, I believe (& positive) it's NOT a blown head gasket. There is NO water in the oil & it's not milky. I just have an oil leak at the "oil filter adapter" which I plan to replace the gasket & o-ring soon. Where is the "engine oil cooler" on 94 Chevy K1500 4x4 & what does it look like? If it's not an "engine oil cooler", what else could it be that causes this oil leak problem? Need help & advice ASAP, please.

One last symptom he didn't mention in the list of them is; exhaust leaking from the head area..on 2 GM's (a 4 banger and a V6) both leaked to the outside corner of the head, without blowing into the coolant or the coolant getting into the oil. One last tip, on the smaller newer aluminum head and/or block engines so prevalent out there now, but the valve covers and re-torque the heads after 20-50K miles, you would be surprised at how many are almost falling off when you do! As the metals lead themselves to more movement than the study cast iron of days of old.

Think my head gasket is gone on my 02 jeep liberty. I've had one problem after another with it however it's never overheated once which is crazy. Waterpump started leaking from gasket so replaced that, radiator leaked replaced that and hoses started spraying out the radiator cap on the overflow replaced that and thermostat but still to much pressure on radiator hose and still blowing out the overflow. Well the radiator cap on the overflow which is a stupid place to put on if you ask me. Much easier to trouble shoot with radiator cap and separate overflow

let engine get to working temperature, then squeeze the water pipes/hoses on radiator, if they are hard as rock u have pressure from engine getting into them to your coolant system. If your hoses are squishy, then u should be fine, if they are hard on squeeze or u cannot squeeze them,u are in trouble =)

OK here's one for you 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0. Dead a radiator flush one burping the system coolant started blasting like a geyser out of my radiator. Any help would be useful right as of now I'm changing the radiator water pump thermostat several the lines but not true this is actually going to fix the problem
@wiley0714
@wiley0714 6 жыл бұрын
Confusing post. You did a radiator flush ( then you have to squeeze the hoses to burp the air out of the system) , after the engines heated up and the thermostat opens to allow the coolant to flow through , then if you put the cap back on the radiator you shouldn't have any fluid coming like a geyser out of anywhere. Unless you have some type of loose hose clamp or something
@biggerdaddy2981
@biggerdaddy2981 6 жыл бұрын
@@wiley0714 Not sure exactly what to say. I burp the radiator like I was told to by leaving the engine and waited for it to take the coolant level down. But it never really dropped much at all and from what I know it should have dropped some and need a little more. So kept waiting for it to drop a little did then I put more. While waiting for it to drop more I looked away for a minute. While looking away I heard like a boiling sound turned back to the radiator to see it shooting straight up in the air. Shut it down to just watch it keep boiling over. Waited till it stopped put a little more in and it was full again put the radiator cap back on and called it a night. Went to work the next morning all good on my way stopped for a beer run cause u know all good things start with a beer run, too walk out and see to the antifreeze just pouring out from under the car. Popped the hood seen it shooting from the general direction of the radiator. So ordered one radiator thermostat and water pump and a couple of hoses. Now to the present time removed all of these parts and while I have it opened not sure if that could have been extreme pressure because of a blown head gasket. If so might as well pull it also and check but not sure if I would know what I was looking for. Oh and replacing the valve gasket. New comer to working on my own engine. Always been intrigued by electronics and do most of the work on them myself, so why not do the same on engines. Sorry rather winded question but I only have so much time in a day with 12 hour work days and a 8 year old son, so most of my tinkering time is hours i should be sleeping. And need to do the lower main on my wrangler so need to get this figured out

And not doubting your trick to c if it's blown, but why doesn't anybody else put this in a video so people can figure out or easier. What a waste of my time and money with that contraption. It doesn't let you know where all of the possibilities of leakage is happening.

Anyone who knows mechanics can tell if you have a blown head gasket w/o that dumb tool and fluid. Whatever happen to real mechanics? Gees! Rookies!

Luke Dawg anyone can tell but it’s always good to have re assurance, so that your not the guy that just throws parts at stuff and wastes money without proper diagnosis.

I’ve used that many time on blown head gaskets and they pass even when head gasket is toast. If I relied on this tool I would never fix cars.

Why is that the deal with most mechanics? I'm in the technology industry and I can diagnose a computer or tech problem quickly and fix it correctly but most mechanics can't. Maybe I should have been a mechanic, I'd be taking in customers.

Is it a Subaru? Yes your head gasket is bad. Is it a Toyota Tercel? Yes tour head gasket is bad. Is it a jeep? Burn it and buy a Toyota. Is it any other Toyota? No. Your head gasket will last a million miles.
