The complexity of designing a new car with this many system is going to have bugs. I'm sure many people know the absolute mind boggling amount of code it takes. Like or not new cars are becoming more and more computerized. This is the reason we get more hp out of a v6 today then we did 2 v8s from the 80s and get better mileage and reliability. That said it sucks cause I like to tinker and these manufacturers are doing everything they can to make you bring it to them for repairs. My dad has a 2016 grand Cherokee overland, the damn thing has 15 computers, no way he or myself are touching that. Looks like the jl is going in the same direction, but they have to so they can compete. Guess the whole argument just reminds me of the fight against fuel injection. Its here to stay just gonna have to get used to it.. But that is some surprising cheap materials for the price range, and hopefully they will have a few of the bugs and oversights fixed soon. Can't believe you can drive off without the key. No one thought to put a proximity sensor on a refresh rate.

Horsepower numbers dropped in the late 70s and 80s because of the oil crisis and stringent emissions policies, not because automobile manufacturers couldn't build an engine. Yes, you can get more power out of less displacement by manipulating fuel maps, timing, and cam profile by using a computer to monitor parameters thousands of times per second in today's world, but formula1 reached the limits of the combustion engine in the late 80s and early 90s (about 1 hp per cc). Now its all about thermal efficiency. And the major tradeoff to that is reliability.

They are not aiming the new ones to their previous customer base. They have become overpriced, tech heavy, complicated vehicles, that are designed to be brought to the dealership for service. Am I the only person who thinks the new pickup is going to be a quick ending fad? - Many of the issues mentioned boil-over from the JK - Cracking winshield - unless you got a 2007 - 2011 windshield, expect cracks on a yearly basis - The seatbelt buckle sticky fabric - This is also found on the JK and is designed to prevent your buckle from scratching the center console. Im glad they include it as a stick on fabric - makes it easier to replace when it wears out (or peels off) imo. - The Tailgate window seal - Same as on the JKs. i work in a wrangler mod shop and you might be surprised, but those seals rarely need to be changed. - Tailgate - like JK's, taking out the panel covering the trunk pocket is the only way around that one on most wranglers since the tailgate started coming out sideways - Rocks in the Fender Flares - JKs have that issue (slightly less so). I guess its the price we pay to have removable fender flares. - Comfortability - you have to look at where the wrangler is coming from. The JL's interior is superior to the JK's, which was superior to the TJ's. Not many vehicles come with dead pedals - the JK and TJ didn't - luckily, thats where the after market comes in To allow the Tires to stick out more, the body needs to stay narrow - obviously this cuts out shoulder space. The JL has a telescopic steering wheel, giving you much more comfort than the JK fixed steering wheel distance. - Play in the steering wheel - Same for all Wranglers - the steering system has a lot of joints in it, and each joint contributes to some play. The play is necessary in order for the jeep to handle larger tires or rough terrain. You can easily tighten the steering box to your liking to reduce the play, but the tighter you go, you might find that its road manners on ruts and uneven roads at higher speeds become jarring, unpredictable, and difficult to manage. (very similar effect to having a steering damper that is too tight).

@joseybarra20465 жыл бұрын
The flaw in this logic of "don't buy brand new vehicles the first few years" is that it can really only work for a small few. If nobody bought a newly released model, then that "beta testing" would never happen, and by the third or fourth year of production (or whenever you say to buy) the vehicle will STILL have all those initial problems. Besides, this is why warranties were invented.

You can disengage the AutoOff mechanism (that shuts off the vehicle at a stop), by removing the plunger switch under the hood, laying it horizontal to the frame and zip tying it off. This will give you an small AutoOff warning light on the dash, but you no longer have to worry about it shutting down the engine. This is easily reversed by simply reinstalling the plunger switch.

I think we’re losing perspective here. On one hand, every time a new generation of the Wrangler is coming out, we ask Jeep to keep the solid axles, removable tops, removable doors. We also ask it to keep the Wrangler tough and rugged. When we’re off roading, we want the Wrangler to tackle the most difficult trails. But when we’re driving home, we want it to drive and behave like a soft SUV.
@kurtmuzio30775 жыл бұрын
Alot of people here cpmplaining are simply failing to realize its 2018...Jeep has literally spent all their time and money engineering a way to keep the solid axles, removable top and doors, and make it more capable and comfortable than any factory built Jeep has ever been, while meeting all modern regulations and standards...They also need to move massive numbers of them to make them profitable and worth engineering. Yeah, there's things they skipped out on, but name a manufacture who doesnt.

This is far and away the BEST quasi-review I have ever seen. Extremely thoughtful and logical. Almost all of the vehicle reviews I see on KZbin focus on inconsequential things like heated cup holders, the size of the 'infotainment' screen, and other First World toys. One of the many reasons that I avoid 'American' name badged vehicles like Ford, Chrysler, and GM (regardless of where they are designed and/or manufactured), is that they are filled with cheap components, sub-par materials, and completely thoughtless design elements such as you have pointed out. Honda, Toyota, and Nissan have been mastering these types of touches for 30+ years. I'm driving a 13 year-old Nissan with 155,000 miles (with a CVT transmission), and it runs like a top AND, with the exception of the CD player, all of the original controls, switches, and components work fine. Same with my sister's 12 year-old Lexus and another sister's 30 year-old (yes, thirty) BMW (yes, we take care of our cars and keep them). All have the original engines and transmissions. And, everybody knows that Toyota SUV's specifically are capable of running 200 and 300,000 miles with minimal maintenance. Shame, because way 'back in the day,' I had an old Jeep Cherokee that I loved, and I really wanted to love Jeeps and buy another one, however, at their price points, Cerebus/FIAT's oversights are simply inexcusable and there are too many vehicles at this price point which offer a better value. The mechanic that I go to has referred to late model Jeep's as, "pieces of crap". One man's opinion, however, his shop stays busier than Best Buy on Black Friday...……………...in 1999. Another example of Cerebus/FIAT's quality issues are, I've known 3 people who had 2007 through 2017 Wrangler's and all have had problems with the roof leaking. So, Chrysler has had a decade to get their act together and figure it out, and apparently they still haven't. Chrysler has already been on the brink of bankruptcy twice in my lifetime, they better get it together, or they might not survive another rough patch.
@SecretAsianMan22225 жыл бұрын
This seems like you've never had a Jeep before. The window switches have been in the center since there were electric windows. Also, the rain noise is something you should have expected, given that it's normal for the Wrangler. Finally, the interior of the JL is bigger than the JK, so it shouldn't be a surprise. The steering thing is possibly something wrong with your front sway bar disconnect. This was an issue with early cars. The foam on the door is an actual bandaid to try to fix the door seals. This was the easiest/fastest way to fix it. The keyfob thing is literally every vehicle now. Push button is common. Also, there IS a specific key fob spot. It's the slot between the two cup holder spots. Updates are either done by the dealership or over the air updates pushed by Jeep. The customer is never expected to run updates yourself. The start/stop isn't a government regulation, it's just a way to help meet fuel economy issues. The auto park feature is because of the Grand Cherokee that rolled forward and crushed an guy to death. This is a safety feature.

The issue with the key start allowing you to drive off without the key is that if you have a dead battery in your remote, you can still drive somewhere and get another battery or drive home. I have a Harley with a key Fob and the great thing about that is there is a code I can play soon in case I lose break or my remote battery is dead. That should’ve been an option in cars also. The remote start has been here for quite a bit of time in quite a handful of vehicles. Once you get used to the keyless entry and start, it’s almost as if you can’t deal without it like adapting to cell phones.

As a 2013 JKU owner, I can see several things that I would hate about the JLU Jeeps--the biggest being the integration of the turn signals into the front fenders and the orange parking lights integrated into the front bumper. The bumpers and the fenders are two of the most modded parts on a jeep, and the integration of the lights into these two areas make modifications more complicated than it needs to be.

We have both a JK and JL. The floormats in the JK were heavy duty rubber, but in the JL are very thin. How cheesy can you get? The onboard diagnostics (via the steering wheel button) were easier to get to on the JK. We put big tires on the JL and now you can't drive it in a straight line. Needs constant steering input. Like driving a vehicle with worn out steering linkage. Agree, the keyless key is a PITA. Have never liked that feature on any car for the exact reasons shown in this video. Have you got the key? I don't have the key, I thought you had the key. No I don't have the key. Where's the key? In the JK there is a special holder for the key....it's called the ignition. Someone tell me how a keyless key is an improvement...I haven't figured it out yet. Overall I find the JL just cheesier than the JK.

Get back to basics here - this vehicles is designed to accommodate off-road driving, and it always has been. No one drives a Wrangler for gas mileage. And to compare this vehicle to a full-sized truck is foolish. If you want the comfort of a big truck, then don't buy a Wrangler. If you want to get into and out of places that full-sized trucks and other SUV's cannot, then own a Wrangler. As far as not having the key in the vehicle, that's specifically designed to prevent someone from stealing your vehicle and getting any further than a tankful away from you. That works the same in all vehicles, so don't throw blame at Jeep. Chevy, Ford, Honda and all other manufacturers keys work the same way. Wrangler owners are a tight and dedicated group of owners and, although no Wrangler is perfect, neither is your Tundra. Or Ford, or Chevy. Go on "hatin'" but make sure you know what you're hating first.

Yeah I feel like you could VERY easily make this video about absolutely any Jeep, and a lot of the specific ones are the vehicle not being a luxury road vehicle? Super weird to expect those things from a vehicle that used to literally be a metal box with no electronics well into that being the absolute basic idea of a vehicle. By this point they very specifically are catering to community of people who buy these as a "soccer mom" or what have you that he mentions, but the core group of buyers is still "jeep owner" types who should know what they're getting into. That isn't to say there aren't issues with the JL itself, or things people wouldn't/should/don't like about Jeeps themselves, but I think this list is a bit big for what the title makes you think it is. I'm certain there are lots of issues with this new era of "Jeep." But I also think a lot of issues are because "Is Jeep not luxury vehicle." Kinda silly. Also yeah, he's got some issues in there that are just "modern cars" like the GPS/Head Unit, and the Key, etc.

Wrong. They keys are NOT the same. My wife's keyless fob will only drive 20' from the fob before the at shuts down and locks up.. I see Matt's point clearly. Thank you for all the useful info. I owned a Jeep back in the 90s. My main complaint was that the fuel filter was in the gas tank. If you had to replace a cheap $10 fuel filter because it was clogged, you also had remove, and replace the gas tank (very expensive). I don't know if Jeep still has this poor design, or has fixed it.

A lot of these issues go back to previous Jeeps. The TJ didn’t have any arm rest whatsoever, and the hardtop/seals are nearly identical to the JK. The JK also has that water leak when you open the door in the same place, and the window controls in the center. I do believe that the seals in the JL look a little thinner. The hood latch thing would piss me off too. I drive a 2 door JK with the regular hydraulic steering. It drives the same as my friend’s ‘97 XJ and my 04 WJ, but that makes sense because they have the same axle and steering components / geometry. There’s play, and it will always strive for the ditch on a heavily crowned road. However, I do believe there is an issue with the electric assist steering in the JL. The key thing is plain dumb. On a new Grand Cherokee with the engine running, the Jeep will beep at you if the key leaves the vehicle and will continue to beep until it’s returned. The JK also has issues with rocks in the fenders, but not nearly as bad. And the engine stop start is very annoying, and government mandated, but it can easily be disabled by disconnecting a cable under the hood (there’s a KZbin video about this) and plugged back in to work at any time.
@brianjune1775 жыл бұрын
Honestly, for me... the TJ which I have is the right balance of the original charm of a Jeep, rugged minimal requirement of a "vehicle" and minimal comfort. There is no question when you hop in a TJ or older Jeep.... what its design and purpose is... its clear without question that its not your creature comfort highway cursing vehicle so the expectations of such are not there. The latest models of the Wrangler make me think some engineers who love their Cooper Mini's driving to work thought it would be nice to have a 4x4 version. Most of what I see is like trying to make a high tech hammer..... The new Wranglers just don't do it for me....

@@Liberty_Offroad 29 years old here. I rebuild and fix my own cars, and I refuse to drive anything with traction control or ABS (although I would prefer a way to have an ABS system in the rain, but revert back to a prop valve system in the dry, havent figured out how to do that yet). Traction control and ABS for me seem dangerous. Also, I refuse to drive anything with a computer that does anything other than make horsepower. One time I had a nearly deadly scenario happen in the first year of the coyote powered ford F150s. I had a real nice drift going on a left turn to test out the motor (was a rental pickup for getting a fridge) And it waited for me to get about a 40 degree deviation from where the truck was pointing to where it was going, (all this with all of the nanny equipment turned off) Then it did a full cut of all engine power, Nearly sent me into a pole. Luckily I reacted fast enough and countersteered sharply to avoid the pole. ^ Thats just an example of how traction control and stability control systems can try to kill you even if you have them turned off. My other no-go on cars is cars that use V-belts instead of serpentine to drive water pumps.

I rented one for a week and learned that I did not want to buy one. My left shoulder was constricted by the pillar I was constantly needing to twist my body to fit in the thing. I drove from Boston to northern Maine and was worn out, it handled horribly. It did ok with the little bit of offroad we did but we did not go anywhere hard. The "key" issue I can see happen when you start it up to warm up on a minus 20 degree day and then go clean the windows and loose the key fob from your pocket. Then wherever you drive to you are stuck. Try backing a trailer up and open the door to lean out and check how close you are, you can be rolling slowly to slowly back that last couple feet and open the door to watch and suddenly you are not backing up. The one I rented had just under 500 miles when I rented it and we drove it a lot, it looks pretty sweet in the pictures, but it was not enjoyable to drive. The HHR we rented the next time was just as small but twice the fuel economy and it went on all the roads the jeep went on, the HHR was only nice in the pictures, the jeep does look cool in pictures on top of a bluff. The one "benefit" is when it rains and you are driving it is REALLY LOUD like in a tin can, so my teenager had to wear headphones to listen to their "music".
