I used to go out there when Jim Bishop was doing work on the property. He was a lot of fun to talk with. Last time I saw him actually working, he was building the moat. His health has prevented him from doing much lately, but we sure do appreciate what he has done and shared with many people.

Chief Villa ----You might try an anti inflammatory , and , physiotherapy . If they are really bad , don`t hesitate in getting a knee replacement . My wife had one on March 4, 2022 and now , 5 months later , is up to walking a couple miles a days , including some hills . If you do get a knee replacement , follow their instruction to the letter . Don`t work too hard , or , do too little work .

We visited bishops castle years ago and the only reason I climbed to the top was the knowledge that thousands of people have been up there before me, That was built so sketchy with barely more than tack welds , I agree with what colt said about not being scared because they’re not a welder lol I still think that was one of the most dangerous things I’ve done, I can’t believe it hasn’t collapsed yet , metal does rust 🫣

You drove right past my house. I live 2 miles south of the start of Shelf Road. We drive it frequently. Like they said, no four-wheel drive required, but what makes it so dangerous is two things: 1) driving too fast, and 2) on-coming traffic driving too fast! People who work at the gold mine use Shelf Road to commute from home to work. They've gotten so used to the road that they tend to drive much faster than they should. So it's best to avoid the road during shift changes! But not every accident is due to speed. One unfortunate elderly man had a serious health issue while driving Shelf Road two years ago and plunged 187 feet down permanently ending his health issue. His pickup truck burst into flame which started a brush fire. One of the most interesting stories involves a "high-speed" pursuit on Shelf Road. At 9:30pm on November 1, 2020 an armed fugitive from justice with five felony warrants led police from three local cities as well as Sheriff’s deputies from two counties on a high-speed chase from Cañon City north through Cripple Creek by way of Shelf Road. One can only imagine the frantic, reckless drive up Shelf Road of one car followed by the many flashing red and blue lights that illuminated the dark along with the screaming sirens echoing off the steep canyon walls along the way. The fugitive fired at deputies and officers as he fled, crashed his car, evaded police on foot, and was apprehended the next day in an abandoned cabin. Just days after being sentenced to 34 years in prison he escaped the Teller County jail and a manhunt captured him again four days later. Now he is part of the local folklore of Shelf Road. Thanks for the videos. Great series!

We live close to Bishops castle and have been there several times. As a former welder I am scared shitless every time I walk around on the metal grating and look at the bird shit welds on the hand rails. Scary stuff. To be honest, I can't believe the state has not made it off limits to walk around in/on. Old Mr. Bishop is quite the character.

Hey guys, just so you know, this is the first time I have ever commented on a video on U-T EVER! So first, thanks for doing this video, it's great to see a video that's about the Cripple Creek area. I have lived West side of Colorado Springs, Manitou Springs, Ute Pass, Divide, and last Cripple Creek, for the last 30 years and i love the area, and all its history. Bishops Castle should be on a must do stop for anyone that is in the area. It's a drive that will get the kids faces off their phones and looking for all the wildlife. I had the great honor of sitting and talking with Jim for about an hour about 15 years ago. He had just returned from a big box store with his pickup, loaded down with 80 lb bags of concrete. I started to move to help him off load them and he almost yelled at me to stop. Thats when my 80-year-old dad, 16-year-old daughter and I started talking to Jim. You see it is a point of pride for Jim, that he has built, placed, put in, moved, wielded, polished and loved every bit of it by himself, with only minimal help from family and VERY close friends. To make a long comment longer, part of the reasoning and motivation for Jim is not only to make a place for his family, but to give the county, as he described it, a big middle finger. they wouldn't give him a permit for one of the buildings he wanted to do, so he just keeps going and "adding" onto what he had a permit to do. Shelf road is a great road to drive with some breath-taking scenery (and drops) along the way. I have driven it many times, not only in my 74 1/2 Jeep Renegade (sorry small brag), but also in my pickup truck. Don't take your Tesla up there and you will be fine. It is deadly today for mainly two reasons. One, flat landers and (Lov yall) Appalachian "mountaineers". Just remember, in tight spots it the UP-hill driver that has the right of way, and on shelf you may need to back up 100 yards or more to get to a good passing spot. Second, don't be a moron, if you're coming up to altitude, don't drink. those "two beers, I swear officer" do and will affect you a lot more at 9K+ height than at the 1k or less that you have been living at for the last 40 years. Again, sorry to make such a long comment, so God bless, be safe, and have a great day.

There are still wild donkeys in Cripple Creek. We have seen them the last couple of years, but most recently in September of 2022. I've concluded they no longer like the crowds, but I could be wrong. We often find them at the school or along the back road on the west side of town. They like apples, but shouldn't eat too many. BTW, Phantom Canyon is very cool and worth the trip. We drove it in a stock Surburban. Should probably have had a smaller vehicle, but still doable.

Colt... I just went through all of what you are doing with the charging system for my 95 XJ 2-door... I put grounds from the battery to everywhere, 2 gauge wire... Replaced the fan, the switch roller in the dash, resistor... Read the voltage at the positive terminal on the back of your alternator going to the battery... Should be 13.6 or higher... Optimally, 14-ish. Unless you have a ton of stuff going on, which you may, the alternator should stay between 13.6-14ish... My problem is that I just got a bad alternator from the auto store... Replaced, and done...

Are you losing battery voltage with the Cherokee just sitting there. If so connect your voltage meter to the battery and start pulling fuses one by one till your voltage stabilizes. If that doesn't work it's time to pull out the power probe. I also have had the pleasure of talking to Jim Bishop and he is very blunt and tells it like it is, which is quite entertaining! There is also a large and beautiful Buddhist temple between rustic and red feather.
