The blender cone has terrible topology for subdivision surface modelling.
We need a cone made from all quads which gives us all the control over the smooth curvature running over its edges and the top point.
We can fix those things to give you a much better cone
It takes ages to make these!! Please consider supporting me!

These are some of the best modelling tutorials I’ve every seen, just amazing. I am having a lovely morning working my way through them: the all quad cone is a thing of beauty!

Things I learned in just a few minute: 1) There is something called "Looptools" I need to turn it on ASAP! 2) Don't use default Cones 3) Make these as shapes as template files & use them instead of the defaults 4) GG Does not = Good Game.. but hitting "G" Twice in blender, hahaha. Brilliant overview. Much love!

Looptools is amazing. Turn on the f2 add-on too. Those are the two real essentials. Thank you.

Wow! 1. Didn't know Blender had a cone already and that it sucked 2. Learned so much here! And with the assets browser, I can just make one and use it any time I need to!! Thank you for sharing this!

wait wait WAIT, If I press ctrl + any of the numbers it automatically adds a subdivision surface with THAT number of subdivision on the level viewport? WHAT?? that's SOOO COOL, I like your funny words magic man, I really like it.

What would be the most efficient way to model the nfl shield shape. I import as an svg like in the typography to mesh tutorial but after I inset the shape can’t seem to fill in the rest of the face with the right topology. Thanks your tutorials are top notch!

So I was feeling lazy and didn't want to bother adding any addons. I found a different way of doing it: 1: Add an 8 sided cylinder mesh [Shift + A] -> {Mesh} -> {Cylinder} 2: Select the top set of vertices and scale them to 0 [Tab] -> [1] -> [Alt + Z] -> [S] -> {0,0,0} 3: Add a small number of loop cuts [Ctrl + R] 4: Merge the top vertices to center [M] -> [A] 5: Select the top loop cut, add your vertex group, and mark the seam [Ctrl + G] -> [2] -> [RMB] -> [M] 6: Now select every other edge and dissolve to create quads [NUMPAD 7] -> [X] -> [ i ] 7: Add a subdivision surface modifier 8: Use [G] -> [G] to slide edges to create the desired curvature Neat tip: If you've created too many loop cuts you can make the top quads larger by disolving loop cuts below the top loop cut though it will lilkely throw off proportion

Hi Doug. I started in 3D in 1995 using Pixel Putty Solo and Bryce. Moved on to Softimage 3D in 1997. Softimage XSI in 2000. Maya around 2001. Found blender at v 2.3 in 2003 or 2004! VFX was my full time job for 25 years. Dont let that put you off. I think I takes a few months to get to a really high level. Hopefully some of my videos will mean you don't have to wade through the years of stupid mistakes I have had to make!

Isn't it something bad going on at the tip of the cone? I guess it is like a quad with two diagonally-opposite vertices raised above other two (which looks like it needs an extra edge between one pair of verts to "fold" like that, but it didn't)

I'm using Blender 4.0 and merge by distance didn't work for me, my cone was still pointy :(

there's no downloading, just go to edit>preferences> add-ons> search for whatever add-on you're looking for such as "loop tools"> click the checkbox and it will instantly enable it

Why can't I just use the existing cone and add vertices to it?????????? So dumb that I have to waste so much time creating one from scratch! And MANY times since I want different models!
