13:31 when you import the ear picture it has only 10 vertices around the edge yet the hole in the head has 11. The simplest solution would seem to be that where there is a triangle at the top right of the ear, add another vertex to the triangle and extend a line to the edge of the ear (pinna) which means we're dealing with all quads AND we have the right number of vertices for attaching to the head. This has been a really great project and while I've had to run it through several times in places, it has been really useful in helping me improve my knowledge of Blender. If only I'd known of the knife tool before! Many thanks.

Thank you!! I have spent a couple hours trying to figure this out. I totally remade the ear thinking I made a mistake someplace. 2nd time same problem as first. I had just figured out that the extra vertex was at the top of the ear and that he had drawn the ear on the head slightly different from the ear in the separate drawing. The ear on the head has an extra cut in the bottom left that gives the 11th vertex and actually makes a triangle. Your spot gets rid of one and puts the extra vertex more in line with the layout of the ear cutout. Thanks man!

I just want to say thank you for taking the time to create this. I have been a 2D artist for years but am still fairly new to 3D, and I can model just about anything without much effort, with the exception of people. Which is a problem because people are my favorite subject to use in my art. I've watched tons of character modeling tutorials, but yours is by far the most detailed and easiest to follow, and you take the time to explain everything so well. I really appreciate how great you are at explaining and showing what you do, and your process makes something that's incredibly difficult to begin with seem so much more attainable. Thank you for your awesome work.

If you're wondering why the vertice count is not the same, he added a cut from the triangle in the top right of the ear. it passes down and around and through the ear canal and then back over to the top roght of the ear and around to the back of the at the top right again. Just after 16:38 after he shows the vertice count, the very first time it zooms back out, you can see the cursor over the loop cut in the left view.

For anyone wondering about the Proportional Scaling circle at around 7:05, you have to press O, press G on the desired vertex, then scroll wheel the tool strength. Another tip: Scroll Wheel Up makes the circle smaller and vice versa wider...
@thejordannader
@thejordannader 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the advice. I might add, that on my version of Blender it requires two taps of G to toggle to the "Vertex Slide". Also, scrolling the mouse wheel no longer controls the vertex slide. It's now controlled by moving the mouse.

@@grayslimeguy8444 I was stuck here for a while. Google helped me eventually so now I'll pay it forward. Let's start with proportional editing off for the sake of clarity. Press O to enable it, HOLD G (don't just press it) and scroll the mouse wheel. Chances are that the size is set waaaaay to big for you to see anything happening, so keep an eye on the numbers at the top of your screen where it says Proportional Size (Smooth) and you should see that changing. In my case I scaled down until about 0.15000 before the circle actually came into view.

Overall, really great tutorial, and I'm really pleased with what I got so far following your steps. Sadly, the part about the ear was really frustrating for me: Up until that point, you gave fairly detailed instructions and had pretty great reference images to follow. With IMO the most complicated part of the head, the ear, you suddenly switch to a fairly drastic tempo that sometimes requires almost frame-by-frame analysis of what you're doing and start saying things like "I recommend having a lot of reference pictures for the ear". When saying things like "push this vertex in and this one out" it would also be helpful if the video slowed down a bit to make it easier to catch what vertex you're talking about and get a rough idea about how far in or out it should be pushed. The "final result" of the ear, in my case and in your video, as far as I can tell, also seems to miss that little nub in front of the ear canal (seemingly that's called "tragus"), which makes it really hard to use my own ear as a reference where things should go. For now, I have something that kinda looks like an ear, more or less, but since the instructions for grafting it onto the head seems also fairly rough, I think I'll do that part tomorrow. It might have been a good idea to split the ear into a separate video and go into a bit more detail there.

Blender Art, thank you for the tutorial I've learned so much from it. A minor request though. Could you please occasionally pause for a few seconds with the whole model (with verts, etc... displayed) in both front, and side view displayed when you get to what could be considered milestones so that we can see if we missed where you added an edge loop or other item? KZbin makes it nearly impossible to catch some of the important frames because you can only pause on seconds. Thanks again for the awesome tutorial.

I feel this could've been either a longer video where you slow down a bit to elaborate more in each section or make each section of the head its own video. Having to pause and replay the same few second section (sometimes multiple times) to catch some of the minor details can get a little tiring. Despite that, it's still good and I've been able to follow along so far.

alternatively , when making the eyes, or any other object to be connected. You dont have to add the modifiers to it.Just use ctrl J to join them once you have it positioned how you want it. Just make sure the object with the modifiers is the parent. So youll select it second. Then ctrl J. doing this automatically adds all existing modifiers .

Thank you @BlenmderArt! My little question is on the Ear connection to the Head in the front. I've done it, but the connection area doesn't look smooth... It looks like there is a little ledge or something. I've tried everything (I know of) but the Ear still looks like I just glued it there. How do I smooth that area there, so I don't see the black line where the connection is? (I did the "smooth vertices" but didn't help). Thank You!! You're one of the best tutorial instructors!

Thanks for the great tutorial. @17:00 you tell us to make sure the vertices of the edges match before joining, but you don't tell what to do when they don't. That's my problem right now. The edge in the head as 11 vertices, my edge of the ear somehow only has 10. So how do I solve this issue? Thanks for any advice.
@stormcoast910
@stormcoast910 2 жыл бұрын
I had the same issue just now. In the video there is a cut at about 16:39. Before the cut the statistics show the ear consists of 82 vertices on the whole and 10! vertices around the outer edge. At 16:46 its suddenly 105 vertices on the whole and 11 around the outer edge. Very strange. I solved the issue by adding a new loop cut (Control R) that goes through the middle of the ear. Suddenly my statistics match his at 16:46. You can compare your ear with the one in the video on the left side at 16:46. There you will see, where to put the loop cut. Good Luck.

Try taking a close look at the video to see any place where you might have a triangle instead of a quad. This was the source of the problem for me. You just have to use the knife tool to add a vertex, and connect it to the outermost edge loop.

So, if this happens to anybody else: For me, after joining the mouth to the head, when recalculating the normals, the normals for the vertices at the tip of the lips were flipped, screwing up the surface at those points completely. To fix it, I unhid the inner part of the mouth, selected the inner-most loop and hit "ctrl +" until the vertices on the tip of the lips are selected, too. I then used shift-N again, and made sure to select "inside" for the Recalculate Normals command. That fixed the normals on the vertices and everything was fine from there.

To fix it, left click the object while in "object mode" and choose "set origin," then "origin to 3D cursor." If your 3D cursor isn't at the origin, you'll have to set it to origin beforehand to do this. @11:10 in the video, when filling out the head, what did you do with the vertices that are just all over the place in the front view side? I am not sure how to align them on the front side
@BlenderArt

in the front view you need to push them into the place along the x-axis only and I think everything will be fine

I just don't understand how if you move the opposite side of the eye part, the side view doesn't move, but it does for me. I'm following your instructions from the first part but I can't do it here so it's a big mess if I continue, could you tell me how you do it so that the circle stays straight in the side view ? Thank you

Your videos have been sooooo helpful, although at 7:00 when I hit proportional edit mode, it doesn't do the same as yours does. When I left click it moves the whole mouth, not one vertices. I've tried to find other ways to do it - like sculpting but it doesn't do the same as this. As I am a beginner, I have no clue whatsoever what I'm doing but hope that you can help!

I've used the proportional editing in the past just fine, but right now the tool is scaling the entire project when I select those three verticies, and it won't let me scale down with my mouse wheel. Do you have any idea why this is?

I think it's because the size of the Brush it's very big try to scroll the mouse wheel many times

I see heads with the same flow but more topology. I understand this is a tutorial and the need to keep it simpler but, would you want to add a subsurface modifier to add topology at the end and, would that give you a smoother look when creating expressions in animation? And thanks for taking the time to make this tutorial. I know from video editing, the amount of effort that went in to it, tip-o-the-hat!

@BlenderArt

thank you, look it's the same method if you're gonna make a stylised character like this one properly you should repeat the same steps like this tutorial for every single character.. it's only depended how much do you practising with blender.. I have made videos and Characters last year you can check them out it's probably the same method of course you can use many many ways to create a character but you shouldn't learn all of them at the same time.. you can stick with one method for now ..

4:33 I can't merge vertices because the mirror modifier selects 4 vertices and merges them all together *edit: After trying a bunch of different methods to merge the two vertices, I gave up and redid the face which has seemed to work so if you have the same problem as me it looks like your only option is to redo the previous video and rejoin the two meshes.
@BlenderArt
@BlenderArt 2 жыл бұрын
so if you have a mirror modifier and you activate clipping in this modifier .. you already have the centre vertices on the x-axis together.. you can't merge vertices together because they are 1 vertices but this vertices is mirrored on the other side..
