I liked the way you aproached the problem even more than the lessons themselves. This empowers others to troubleshoot their own problems instead of relying on recipes so to speak.

Changing the clamp indirect value did the trick for me. Thank you!

you saved my day, i had some terrible indoor scene, render time halved and it looks a lot better, i altered the settings slightly but you got me on the right track, thanks

Thank you for the advice! I'll surely try it on my next interior shot. As for your English, I never would have guessed it wasn't your first language. And I'm sure it's only gotten better since you've posted this.

The troubleshooting makes it easy to figure other shit out on your own, GJ BTW this all still applies in blender 2.82a i was using thousands of samples to get rid of noise, but this... this is gold :D

The conclusion I draw is that when the emission light source is so close to the ceiling, the first bounce is almost as bright as the light source itself. Therefore that light bouncing off the ceiling need to be effectively given near equal weighting as the direct light in terms of samples and further bounces. I guess you could do hackish things like having the emission light only lighting the ceiling with zero bounces. Then have an area light lighting the scene below (excluding the light fixture). But that just seems wrong. I wonder what the proper solution is? Could Blender automatically make the ceiling (or any flat surface) behave like an area light, when it senses extremely bright bounced light. Effectively the ceiling needs to have a multiple importance setting - even though it's only an indirect light source. Anyway, thanks for sharing.

I think clamping at 0,5 is extremely low. It helped in this case of course but I reckon it is just very bad practice: in most scenes it will literally kill your light and will alter your results.

Hi Riccardo, the trick explained in the tutorial is an old one, and works. But it has the side-effect of "killing" secondary bounces intensity which, in terms of scene-referred lighting are a must for photorealism, especially when you deal with strong lights as sun lamps, or HDRs. Everybody can find tutorials and resources on this subject, investigating the "blender-filmic" topic. In the scene used for this tutorial though, it looks still acceptable since the light emitters are quite weak.

Hey Isscpp, thanks for the comment! Anyway as I said in the video, this trick is a tradeoff between accuracy and noise reduction. I wasn't a big fan of clamping myself, but I found myself in the situation where i wanted to use mesh lights in interiors and I couldn't find a way to reduce the noise and the fireflies. Infact I decided to record this because I couldn't find a solution on the internet for this specific case and had to experiment to find one, then I decided to share it. When I use Sun lamps or Hdrs I never use clamping , because I don't have that kind of issue. I totally agree that it kills the secondary bounces, but you can also fine tune it to be enough to reduce the fireflies but keep the overall indirect lighting and let the high sampling and the denoiser do the rest.

Riccardo Bancone Also increasing the exposure in the color management confuses multiple importance sampling - leading to more noise then you would get with Exposure at 0 but brighter lights. Another cause of the fireflies in this specific case might be, that the mesh lights have very little surface area and larger lights usually lead to less fireflies - but i get, that it's required by the scene in this case.

Stuntkoala I'm not sure about the exposure thing actually.
@blenderm4n
@blenderm4n 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah it's a small influence and might be unnoticable for exposure 1.5, but I noticed it someday and avoid it since then. I think this is because Cycles "doesn't know" about the exposure setting and therefore doesn't consider it while rendering the darker parts of the image. You can test it - actually I just did imgur(.)com/a/TuATI first image with emission at 32.0 and exposure at 0 rendertime 3.78 second image with emission at 2.0 and exposure at 5.0 rendertime 3.79 Hope youtube will not delete this because of the link. Edit: nevermind I got confused with the filenames -_- but you get the idea - it's mostly noticable in shadows.

😍 Thanks for this! Please may I ask you: Do you have a Mac or Windows PC? I have a Mac with aNVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2 GB, 2.79 detects it correct as OpenGL card, but if I use it with Cycles, 2.79 crashes. New to Blender, I appreciate any help, also such as correct GitHub or Blender forum to address this.

Hey, Sorry, I don' t use keyshot. I tried It once but I'm no Expert of it. These Path thracers are all very similar , so many principles May Be applied, but you really have to do some research on how ti optimize the specific engine.

Unfortunately this is merely hacking around the problem with montecarlo algorithms. If this algorithm could be made more efficient it would have been done...unfortunately it is at its limit, you still need 4000+ rays to reach noisefree levels so the bottleneck is and will always be hardware.
