In general a good approach. Imho using a curve (made with the free addon Bezier Utilities, just a few clicks in object mode) and using the screw modifier is faster and way more flexible. You can change the shape very quick without having to select and move every single vertex. If you are satisfied with the shape you can convert it to mesh (you can keep the curve for later use with other shapes), use Looptools/Space to even out the loop distance if needed, and if there are still shading issues use the Edgeflow addon.
