Blender Tutorial: How to Add Tears To Clothing

In this video, we go over how to add tears to cloth without using alpha masks. Modifying the actual geometry allows the cloth to physically respond to the tearing leading to more realistic tearing.

So I'm trying to make clothes for a model i plan to use in SFM. Would it be the same process? what i mean is the simulation and all, even when trying out or rather attempting to make clothes that stick to the model using the cloth simulation. what im getting at is im not sure how to have the end result be it's on Mesh/Model.
