Ok so there is a way to just run the compositor in Blender. You have to delete the render layer node. Didn't know that. More on this in the next clip.

@@BlenderBob import your video into the video editor, then in the composer enter a video node as input and always select the video you imported from the node menu or open a new one if you prefer and do the same thing, I had added some links but the links are not allowed and have deleted responses.

I copy the text on this from an answer on Blender Stack: While you can't use composite nodes directly in VSE strips, you can setup the compositor with an image sequence or video file input without adding any elements from the 3d scene.Then in the VSE you can add a scene strip which gets the composited render results, so you can mix in audio and use any VSE specific features. You can also setup multiple scenes with different composite nodes and join them all in the VSE. Search about that. of course it's not a compositor like nuke or natron, but for small jobs you can use it

I use render compositor with a sequence, I just render animation. With an empty scene why is it a big problem? I know it's not very performant but if it has all the necessary tools it would be nice to see the complete workflow in blender. It's also handy to render and get the composite automagically.

You know that it will be a nuke tutorial and not an blender one? You can't rly composite in blender, why? Blender doesn't work in realtime, misses many important features a compositing software offers. When you worked with a real compositor you understand that there is no way to work with blender.

If you learn the principles you can use Anything, Fusion, Nuke or Natron, even if is dead.... Nuke is Kind of there all 'alone' on Compositing, because Its only 'Rival' on PC compositing was Fusion somehow, but now That Fusion is under Blakmagic they are not even bothering adding features or improving , they are keeping it as a side tool for Davinci... So, better learn Nuke because is the only one that you will see on most productions. Yeah, you can use AE but for real, unless is a very simple thing, is a pain...

I'm so happy you're doing compositing! Can't wait for the rest of this. At 11.05 when you complain that the image order needs to be reversed in the nodes (homer needs to plug into the bottom one to be the top "layer" of the composite) that actually makes sense if you think of the Blender nodes as lines of code. Computer code is executed top to bottom, and so it will do the bottom layer first, I.E the top input. Second input then is added on top, and so on. For some reason this is how they decided to do it in Blender, haha :D This goes for all of Blender nodes. The inputs are resolved top to bottom like lines of code, so the top "layer" is the last node input. Quite unintuitive

I 200% agree with using nuke for compositing. It is extremely powerful, fast and used in big studios. Blender is also really powerful, but slow af. It can't handle simple blurring or glares in realtime. It needs a complete overhaul to work realtime. It has the potential but needs some love.

I think even at maximum quality there is still compression on JPGs. You can see this by saving out an image as a JPG with max quality, putting it back over a lossless image as a layer, then setting the JPG layer to the Difference blend mode. Then, use the levels and you can see that there is some compression that was added.

i think its pretty trivial to switch from one compositing program to another for the basic functions. sure one has a good multichannel support, in the other you need a separate inputs and node trees if you exceed 4 channels, some like the rotoscoping tools more in one soft more as in the other or the other way round, but the basic principles of node based compositing stay the same. I even recomended blender as a comp program when there wasn't a free or cheap alternative out there....Biggest nono for using blender beyond basic compositing was the speed at that time. Btw blenders channel keyer (beeing able to key in different color spaces) is something I miss in the other software (not sure if nuke has it, the few months I was able to work with it I hadn't the incentive to look for it), and I even recreated it in fusion since I think it has some interesting results in hard to key footage, (not sure if I succeded since I had to stay away from the original source code). But nice to see you finaly started the compositing tutorial, much apreciated

@VFXRevolutionTutorials
@VFXRevolutionTutorials 3 жыл бұрын
@hjf4a2 I hear what you're saying, but actually not quite true. I, and many other vfx artists use blender professionally for both independent film work and small studio film work (for large film production). While you're correct that it's not used widely in the large studio's workflows (that's due to a number of reasons, quality not being one) it is however used widely in the industry. Big hero being a prime example, which I believe was entirely blender and in my opinion looks just as good as Pixar. There are a number of huge films produced by smaller studios using blender and tons of TV work. I know cause I do it. I also believe Bob said he has done it too. Some projects blender is great for, some not. That's the same for Maya, max, Houdini and all the rest. The correct tool, render engine, physics engine are picked as per job budget and requirement. Blender produces amazing Hollywood level vfx and amazing animation. The reason nuke is used for comping vfx over AE is that AE is limited to it's coding core and therefore not as good. Blender grows constantly and while it used to be no good for professional vfx it is now, and is widely used :)

But considering the price, fusion is a wayy better choice. fusion is like 80 to 90% of nuke, and in the future when blackmagic focuses their team on building fusion , i have a feeling fusion will be better than nuke. If you delete the "Render Layers" node in Blender, Blender will skip any 3D rendering and do only the composition. I still agree that you shouldn't use Blender for composition, but for different reasons. Mainly it's slow and you cannot control the Color Management (Filmic) for individual inputs, it's either on everything or nothing.

I understand that there are best compositors. It's ok to prefer others, but there is a reason the mix node works like that, you put the top image in the bottom socket because the mix node takes the first image and then apply the second image using the factor value as the factor, yes it could simply put the top image on top of the bottom image, but it would confuse blender users that use shader editor. I think that blender cold have an option to composite without having to render a 3d scene, but if the scene doesn't have anything, it won't consume processing so it's not a bad point, you just have to delet the default cube and press F12.

Nuke is the loudest - Foundry makes a point to flaunt it every time they can. Truth be told, companies struggle with it. Clunky interface, geberal instability, lots of bugs, and on top of that a hefty price. But the pipeline is hard to change. People are working now as they worked back in 00s. In Post-Soviet space Fusion is very widespread, tons of companies use it and are quite happy. Lots of movies are made each year using Fusion, but Blackmagic is not advertising it as much as Foundry does. Apart from deep compositing, and a couple of other features, Fusion and Nuke are feature-equal. Though, some people do prefere nuke's scanline rendering way, instead of Fusion's full-frame renders.
