There's a good use for the clear blending mode, that I just came up with by learning of its existence. It would be more aimed at Illustrators/digital painters. Whenever you're painting, you're always changing your brush's size, hardness and transfer properties. Sometimes you want to use the eraser with the same current properties as your brush to keep consistency, but it has its own separate values. By using alt shift + to select clear, you can quickly erase your layer using the same brush settings without having to fiddle with it.

Superb as usual, Jesús. This is probably the best video on the subject that I've seen since Deke McClelland's series about blending modes (titled "advanced blending" or something like that, and of course, not free as this video is). Also, it's amazing you've been able to fit so much information in 40 minutes! Un saludo.

Thanks! Yeah, Deke has some fantastic videos. I learned a lot from them. We both spoke at a conference together last year, and he was really nice. I actually taught him something he didn't know! lol. It was something silly, but it made my day.

Hi Jesús. I'd imagine I'm part of a large of group of enthusiastic amateur Photoshop users who know a bit about blend modes without ever understanding what's 'really' going on. This video is easily the most informative and clearly presented on this tricky subject I've ever watched, and I now feel I have a much better working knowledge of the blend modes and subsequently how and when it's best to use which one in any given circumstance. Thank you so much for taking the time to create such an informative and easy to follow tutorial, and for making it available for free! (Steve in the UK)

I don't think there's any need to speak about when each blend mode was introduced and what other bledning modes it combines to produce a result. Maybe 1% of people watching this tutorial will need those kind of informations, and all the other people are kinda distracted by all the amounts of in my opinion unnecessary information. It would be much easier to understand this video without all the in depth, but mostly useless information.

Overlay is not a combination of Mutltiply and Screen. Under the hood Multiply is (a*b) and Screen is ((1-a)*b). It is imposible to multiply a color by some grayscale color and shift the hue. Only the brightness will change. So no, Overlay is not a combination of Multiply and Screen. I don't know the formula, but surely it's not one of them. And Divide is not an opposite of Subtract. Divide blending mode is used for the same reason, people Divide vectors. To normalize colors. If you shot a photo and your white balance was incorrect. You just pick the color that should've been white on your photo, and apply it to the whole image using the Divide blending mode. This will fix incorrect white balance or bad lighting in your photo. Formula: (b/a).
@PhotoshopTrainingChannel2 жыл бұрын
Adobe says that Overlay either "Multiplies or screens the colors, depending on the base color." I don't know the exact math, but that's why this video says that. It is on Adobe's website. If you feel that the info is incorrect maybe message them about it. Source: helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/blending-modes.html
@rumisbadforyou96702 жыл бұрын
@@PhotoshopTrainingChannel Sorry, I've went to check the math. It's actually a combination of Screen and Multiply. The formula: 1-2(1-a)(1-b) if a > 0.5, or 2ab otherwise. When doing Multiply or Screen the order of layers doesn't matter, because it's a simple product (a*b) ; (1-a)*(1-b). But in case of the Overlay, we use a mid point of the control layer in the equation. That makes the order of layers important (The graph becomes non symmetrical along x=y plane). Because we refer to a mid point of only one layer, but not the other. So for the correct usage of Overlay blending mode, the control layer (the grayscale one) should be below the source layer (the colored one). You in the video used an incorrect order, so I saw a hue shift and intuitively thought that it was incorrect. Try changing the order of the layers and applying the Overlay, you will see a different result and it will be a correct one.

+Jesus Ramirez Fourth pass. No! I can't follow this. You talk of pinlight which uses darken and lighten blend modes, and even though I have taken notes, I didn't get notes on lighten and darken. I have to go back on the timeline again? Where are each layer discussed with times next to them so I jump to them. At the very beginning, you say there are 8 special modes that are affected differently by using either opacity or fill, but you show 9 highlighted blend modes. I was lost here, right at the start! Now, I've experimented with layers over the top of a photo and my layers to blend are similar to yours. I see what happening, but I don't understand what's happening. That understanding is the key. Without the understanding, I'm hunting and pecking. Also, I've seen similar tubes on this subject, and they fall short too. The closest that is as complete as yours is from f64 academy, but he races through these. Fer Pete's sake! THe only thing I really understand is that when you want to affect JUST the luminosity, set it to luminosity mode. For HSL and Balance, use the color or hue blending mode. But I don't really understand these too. This is my fourth time around on this. This is the most complete video on the subject, but notes have to be taken to get a real understanding and that understanding is paramount in making things happen quickly and with confidence. Bottom line, I'm still lost after four tries! ------------------------------------- Edit I've now been to Adobe's help about blend modes at helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/blending-modes.html . Again, I'm lost. This page lists modes that do not exist! And for the ones that do exist, well, here's the text about Lighten blend mode: Looks at the color information in each channel and selects the base or blend color-whichever is lighter-as the result color. Pixels darker than the blend color are replaced, and pixels lighter than the blend color do not change. SAY WHAT?

Jesus, why does Photoshop always refer to the primaries as RGB when green is made by mixing yellow, the true primary, with blue?
@PhotoshopTrainingChannel5 жыл бұрын
Rich, that is true when you are mixing paint. But color in monitors and digital devices are made by mixing light. And when it comes to mixing light, Red, Green, and Blue are the primary colors.

I looked it up since I asked and came up with a similar answer. Yet, I still have to give it some thought as still think of the each color as having a defined wavelength whether it's emitted or reflected and whether we mix reflected or emitted light, those wavelengths are going to be the same. I am sure you are right, Jesus, I just need to read some more in order to fully understand the physics involved. By the way, thanks for your excellent tutorials.

@claudiavalcich5 жыл бұрын
I got lost when you demonstrated "Subtract Blend Mode". What you were saying didn't look like what I was seeing (white yields no change; darker colors lighten image); however, it seemed the image on-screen was showing the opposite of that. Then, when you spoke about "Divide", you said it was supposed to be the opposite effect as "Subtract"; yet, you then said it did the same thing (white yields no effect; darker colors lighten image). Can you clarify that?
@claudioabado33173 жыл бұрын
Is it possible that the "Transparency Shapes Layer" option also affects how "Effects" are applied to a layer? Suppose I apply a Pattern Overlay to a pixel layer : if I uncheck the "Transparency Shapes Layer" option in Advanced Layer options, the pattern affects ALL the layer.
