A twist of history about Compiegne. These inspirational 16 Carmelite Martyrs of Compiegne were arrested in June of 1794 for refusing to disband their religious community after the French revolutionary government outlawed religious life, confiscated church lands and property including their convent founded in 1641. They were tried in Paris for “treason” and executed by guillotine on July 17, 1794 during the Reign of Terror. It is widely believed that the sacrifice of these nuns contributed to the end of the Reign of Terror 10 days later on July 27, 1794. They were beatified by the Catholic Church in 1906. In an earlier history-364 years earlier-during the Hundred Years’ War, French heroine Joan of Arc was captured during the siege of Compiegne in May, 1430 by Anglo-Burgundian forces when she led a sortie out of the besieged town. She was tried in Rouen and falsely convicted of heresy and witchcraft, and at age 19 was burned at the stake on May 30, 1431. In 1456 (25 years later) the Catholic Church reviewed her trial, found her innocent of all the charges and declared her a martyr for her faith. She was beatified in 1909 and canonized in 1920.

There is the diary of an elderly man who wrote the whole time of terror and survived till maybe 1796. It is depressing to read:" It was the first time Christmas without church"
