My grandfather was fighting in one of three wars against the communist sovjet in WW2. He was in the frontline at the Lake Ääninen mentioned in the song. RIP Grandpa

yeah rip my grandpa died from wounds before i was even born and my great uncles.... usually people dont want to talk about war but that uncle that was dying showed scars on his back he had eleven granade shards there... it wasnt necessary to remove em so he didnt

interesting to know, main singer is an opera singer called Jorma Hynninen and the background singers are veterans fron the winter War and continuation war during WW2

My grandparents lived through the war times. Love them and all who fought for us. Thank you for respecting our heritage by listening and responding so beautifully to this song. It goes into one' s heart and soul. Loved this post ❤❤❤❤

The thing is, because we are a small nation and nearly every male of age (and some under age) fought for or defended our independence we are all descendants of veterans (or vey closely related to one) so even if we have been independent over a 100 years now and fought to defend that independence 80 years ago it’s still very close to many of us. My grandfather, like so many others, was a veteran. And since most of our veterans are now resting in peace it’s our job to carry their legacy to their great grandchildren and beyond. We are a patriotic nation just perhaps not the happy parade kind of patriotic but the solemn respectful kind.

i think that song was made to make us remember our veterans and to help collect monetary help for them. when in army i participated on one trip to help them and saw simo häyhä and managed to make him uncomfortable by reacting to his wound (didn't mean to) but ithought that must have hurt. anyway i turned to look at something that caught my attention and when i looked back he wasn't anywhere to be seen as i would have apologized if i made him uncomfortable. at the time i had not realized he was häyhä but some other veteran said it must have been. one of life's regrets but he died soon after. our marches are more bloodthirsty from what i have heard.

There are some Finnish "war songs", "Elämää juoksuhaudoissa" is maybe the first from WWII, recorded in 1940. The music is an older Russian waltz from the beginning of the 20th century. Apparently they asked someone to make a Finnish "war waltz", so Äänisen aallot was composed.
