Today there are still about 2000 Finnish war veterans from World War 2 alive. Their average age is over 99, so their numbers are dwindling fast. What they did to keep Finland independent is still remembered well.

@@mariamm9460 All my grandparents died a long time ago and I don't remember how they served during the war. My father was 2 years old when Helsinki was bombed by the Russians in 1944 and he and my grandmother barely survived, so it's very lucky that I'm here at all.

The singer is one of our best professional operasingers. His name is Jorma Hynninen, he is working at the Finnish National Opera.

I want to say something about this so badly but I have no words. Our country is so important and dear to us. We are so thankful for the veterans that fought for it. Can't put this deep appriciation into words. They sing about how we should tell about their efforts to children and grandchildren, remember how precious our land is and never let the memories fade away. I think that is so important to pass forward to younger generations.

The song is called "Evening call of the (war) veteran" The refrain translated goes something like this: "Nurture, soon the brothers will be gone/Remember, our country is dear to us/Tell to us our grandchildren with songs/Do not let the memories ever fade"

"Veteraanin iltahuuto" (The Evening Call of a Veteran) is often sung at funerals of war veterans in Finland. This touching song is dedicated to veterans and their sacrifices and has become an important part of commemorations.

Our winter war veterans 🇫🇮🫡 All Finn's are child or grandchild of some winter war soldier. Hole Finnish nation took part of that, we are so small country. My grandfather took apart as well. But he is not alive anymore. But we are free country because of them. Veterans sings in this song for their children and grandchildren: "take care of us veterans, never forget what has happened and now it is your turn".

Wars would end worldwide if people would keep the chorus in mind: "Take care of us, the brothers will be gone soon; remember us, the country was important to us; tell our tale, to our grandchildren with songs - let the memory never fade."

Those men fought for free Finland. Now they sing for free Finland. One of the most chilling performances also for us Finns. Goosebumps every time hearing this. Just a few of them left but for us, it is really important to remember. Three of my four grandparents had to leave their homes at Karelia. Never forget, never surrender. I recommend the songs from Åttopojat, a group, that sings war-time, somewhat humoristical mocking songs about you-know-which-country... For example this one is with english subtitles kzbin.info/www/bejne/gYLcgoSfhJ58kNk

Solo singer, Mr Hynninen is a world famous opera singer. I saw him singing Macbeth in 2002. It was beautiful.

My father in law was a finnish war veteran. He was sent out to battle the russians when he was just 17, in 1939. He died quite early, around 1990, but I remember him well (finnish men have problems with heart deciese, wich probably is something genetic, since this goes just for the male population, not the female). In spite of this, there are still ca 2000 veterans alive, all of them closer to 100 than 90 years old. I guess in five years they are all gone. Finland has always been a quite poor country up to the 1980ies, when it gradually became more and more wealthy, and is today one of the wealthiest countries in the world, in many aspects bypassing my own home country, Sweden. I think they really deserves it, after hundreds of years of hard living conditions and frequent wars.

Each year there is a word from local veterans in conscription event, idk the name but its where you get the place and time of your service., this year at my town there is only one veteran left, the mayor/townleader asked him/her for their words for this year's conscripts. This song was played as the last veteran requested. No words from them, just this song with text on , twice. This is important for many of the very few remaining veterans
