Krystal is blind and autistic. She lives in a rural town and is unable to drive due to her blindness. Due to these circumstances, Krystal is forced to stay at home despite her goal of traveling and making friends. This has left her feeling lonely and craving human interaction. Krystal wants others to know that friendship is one of the greatest gifts a person can give.

I have an invisible illness that keeps me homebound for long periods and it can be very isolating and depressing for anyone. "Krystal , your very COOL and amazing just the way you are!" I know your comment comes from a place of love, and I hope you don't take this as a criticism, but I'd like to show you how the power of words can influence our message. You said, "She may be blind and autistic, but I also see an intelligent soul with a great imagination." A better way to say this would be, "She's autistic and blind AND is an intelligent soul with a great imagination." Or even better, just say she's an intelligent soul with a great imagination! Otherwise, your words make it sound like one would assume her disabilities impact her ability to be these other things when we both know they do not. We don't want to accidentally use language that predicates her intelligence, talents, etc on her disabilities. I hope this helps!

IDEA: would Krystal enjoy being a volunteer baby cuddler? If it’s too painful I understand completely ❤ but there are babies in the hospital, especially premature babies, that need lots of skin to skin time and their parents need breaks:) and the volunteers are usually either seated or walking back and forth a couple steps, so the blindness should not be a limitation:) Is there anything we can do to support Krystal with transportation?:(

I'm registered blind. I live in Europe and have access to good public transport, which allows me to enjoy a decent level of independence. I can't imagine being stuck in a place where driving is essentially the only way to get around. Krystal seems like a lovely character. She deserves all the best in life.

Whenever someone approaches me to engage in a seemingly meaningless few words, I always give them a smile and share a few nice words in return. More often than not, it’s someone that’s lonely and desperate for interaction. They just want to be seen. Your smile in the grocery store line or comment about the weather might be their only person to person moment that day. Sadly, most people today are too absorbed, unaware, and frankly annoyed by any unwanted interaction-you don’t have to stop and talk, but just perceive that person. To your surprise, it might be a pick me up for you too and help you walk away a better person. ❤️

100%. We have an epidemic of loneliness and we need to put forth effort to be inclusive. It is the most critical part of humanity - opening up to accept and care for others. I know the feeling of being alone and I would rather feel hungry or cold or physical pain.

Good point. I’ve noticed that even trying to make small talk at the grocery store while in line or something is often met with confusion or even disdain. People are so focused on their phones and their own families it’s almost like they view it as offensive when you try to say anything. To be clear I’m not constantly chatting people up or anything bur it’s just something I’ve noticed when I have tried to do it. People are definitely more closed off than they used to be.

I'd love to be her friend. I have a couple autistic friends and they're very lovely to be around. I had the privilege of growing up around a disabled brother so I always was around kids who were different than me so in my mind the way she is is just normal. And it's sad that alot of people are offput by stuff like autism to where they feel scared to try and befriend those people.

I’m completely blind, and I am on the autism spectrum as well. I also have complex PTSD. My favorite thing is music. Music has really saved my life. To be perfectly honest, meditation music saved my life and my music career in so many ways. I can definitely relate to wanting friends. I mean, I don’t want anyone to pity me. But it would be nice to have friends who truly understand and care and love me, and accept me for who I am. I’m a goofball too, but I love that about myself. I love to be me, and I just want other people to accept me for who I am, instead of restricting me, and limiting me from the things that truly benefit me, and the things that I find joy in. It’s OK to ask questions. But I don’t want anyone to try to stop me from doing the things that I like.

I liked your video Krystal. I’ve worked with people of various disabilities over the years in a few different capacities, and yeah loneliness is a big issue. I always tried to spend some time talking with the people under my care, and was frequently rewarded for doing so. Oftentimes the stories and conversations were either super interesting or just plain hilarious. Lots of great personalities and I learned quite a bit. Finding a decent person to talk to may sometimes feel like rooting through the discount bins at a store-you may have to dig for awhile until you find what you’re looking for, but when you do you’ll be glad you didn’t stop looking. My advice is keep reaching out to whoever you can, and odds are favorable you’ll find someone willing to spend some time, and you’ll both be rewarded. Reaching out through this video was a great first step!

Oh, that’s the wrong one nope that’s the right one and that’s how it’s been for me. We’re trying to find friends. It’s not been easy, but I’m doing the best. I can to try to connect with people because I love hanging out and talking to people and having a good time and laughing and joking and stuff as you saw with Chris and I. I wish you could’ve seen one thing that we did where we were barking at each other. It was hilarious.
