Rainbow is so adorable in this, I love how she's the total opposite of her fic counterpart. "Y-you didn't tell me there would be little children!" "It's a sucky job!" "No rainbows, pizza party!" "You didn't test it! We need to close down for maintenance!" The poor thing really doesn't want to murder anyone :( She signed up for this job while knowing nothing, and then desperately tried her best to avoid doing the awful deeds. This is a reaction I could easily imagine the CANON Dash having. We know that she might recklessly jump into things sometimes, and I imagine she'd be just as adorably horrified. Though perhaps a bit more brave and standoff-ish, since canon Dash isn't worrying about the economy lol.

Luffyiscool Yeah. It's a lot closer to canon Dash for sure. Canon Dash would probably go further and perhaps actively try and sabotage the factory... or perhaps even directly fight against it, not caring about the consequences. With the strong moral center she has, she certainly wouldn't ever take part in the job at least, which is probably why the fic version stood out as so glaringly wrong to me.

I felt a core primal emotion torwards a magical talking flying pony with a cyan coat and rainbow mane..... WHAT has this fandom done to me ?!

First, the thing about Rainbow Factory is that the Rainbow Dash in the fanfic is from an alternate Equestria, where pegasi are conceited, racist perfectionists and RD herself isn't as great as she is in the show. Second is that people care more about the world, theme and ideals in RF than the actual story. Along those lines, the story and characters are fine since its just a story. Finally, the story had a sequel called Pegasus Device which is a lot better and longer and gives more character to Dash and the CWC workers which address some of your complaints with the original Rainbow Factory, so don't knock the story until you read the sequel. (God, I never thought I would defend this fanfic on a channel before.)

As I see it, Factory RD is so different from regular RD because in that universe her life was completely different right from the start. She was raised from birth in the Cloudsdale that champions these ideals, the whole 'take pride in Cloudsdale for we make the weather that allows all ponies to live' and the whole 'weak fliers are a disgrace to our city and must be cast out'. She would have never had a chance to not follow those opinions, and she would have no reason to question them because as a skilled flier, they provide her with great respect and benefits. If I recall correctly, she was brought in on the big murderous secret after the Cloudsdale authorities saw her potential in her first Sonic Rainboom. Her sense of loyalty was redirected towards her city and nation by being told so young that this institutional murder was necessary to create the weather that allows ponies to live and it was up to them to shoulder this burden for the good of everyone. By the time the events of Rainbow Factory happen, she's been assisting in murder so long that she hardly has any empathy or conscience any more, and can only escape from her work by foisting what little she has left onto Scootaloo. So when Scoots winds up 'betraying' all the care and attention she put into training her by failing her exam, she looses the only thing that was keeping her sane and completely turns into the deranged monster that ponifies the entire factory as a whole.

Supersheep64 I suppose if we look at it as an alternate timeline it could be easier to accept, but with how it was presented it was kind of hard to do that. Rainbow Dash and Scootaloo's bond is talked about in similar terms to the relationship we know between the two, and things like Rainbow living in Ponyville and her actual weather pony job are brought up as well. This coupled with the way the story starts off made it far easier to read it as a story about revealed dark secrets which are perhaps supposed to more or less line up with the established canon. Even if we do read it as an alternate timeline though, it's still kind of hard for me to accept it just on the grounds of how much they had to change her. Having to change the essence of who a character is to pretty much the opposite of what it is for a story to work is never a good idea in my opinion. Even if Rainbow had a very different life she should not be this far removed from how she normally thinks.

Count Monsparkle Well, not everything people like is going to be good... I don't know. Opinions are sure to vary on these things and if other people liked it, that's cool. For me, none of it worked very well and then it fell apart entirely due to Rainbow's characterization in it.

I'm not surprised you don't like the fic Rainbow Factory, it's pretty terrible. The good thing about RDP is that you don't need to like the source materiel to enjoy it, since they deconstruct the hell out of it. Here's some of the things I noticed, maybe you have too : Original : RD rip off Aurora's wing after she stays to protect Scootaloo Rdp : Her wing fall on her own and RD try to put it back. Original : Aurora uses the signal from the exam to coordinate the counter attack Rdp : After deciding not to do that, she just tells everybody to panic and it does the same thing. Original : The machine arbitrarily works better if you break the ribs of the pony before putting them in it. Rdp : It works better if the pony holds a puppy. Original : No amount of therapy would help her after all she did as the boss of the rainbow factory. Rdp : She becomes the boss of the Rainbow Factory to afford therapy. There's probably a lot more, but that's all I noticed this time. The amount of work that goes into these is amazing. Maybe you can now understand why the MaS is often put on equal standing with FiW. PS : You should stop the video to read Celestia's list of power during the song. The best one I think is "Forced Friendship". It explains so much...

John Johnson Ah, nice. That really goes to show how seriously he's taking the deconstruction aspect of it. Stuff like that makes me appreciate the series a lot more. You're right that you don't need to like the fic to like what RDP does, but I think having read the fics really enriches what the series does and makes it more entertaining. I can understand why RDP would be put in the same standing as FiW, but for me I still haven't seen much from the actual Mentally Advanced Series episodes to consider it being up there just yet. We'll see if that changes whenever I finally return to watching the series though. And yeah, going to have to go back and watch the whole thing a few times, I think, but that song in particular seemed to be dense with information.

RarityDash Well, there would be no Rdp without Mas, but I understand what you mean. You're right about the song, it is pretty dense. I think it's because the song's role is less about the music and more about the story it tells. You have yet to see my favorite songs in Rdp, so I wouldn't worry about it. PPS : You were right, the original name was orion Solstice, not Comet. However, the change was for the sake of humor, so I think it's justified. :)

Trust me. You'll find that MAS episodes 13 and beyond are done in much the same style and humour as RDP. This was basically a transition period of getting a solid idea of the characters and style of MAS. PS-MAS 16 (show stoppers) is my favorite

RarityDash Welcome, also never read Rainbow Factory but I get the gist of it. Most people said it was good though so it is nice to see someone who holds a similar opinion about it. Honestly, the whole thing sounds way to flaw to be a fic I'd ever bother with and don't get why it is so popular. Thought it was a trollfic once.

RarityDash There is one thing I noticed about this and Cupcakes. Neither gives any actual back story or history, let alone explain why. Like in Cupcakes was Pinkie always doing what she did or what happened to her and this one has the obvious issue with the fact that the two main pegasi of the series would both be dead... I mean Fluttershy was a bad flyer and Rainbow Dash dropped out... continuity man, fanfic writers need to learn it XD.

And to Rainbow Factory's credit, they actually did explain the Fluttershy thing at least by saying she never actually took the flight test (not sure why she had that option and it seems to be mandatory for other pegasi though). Rainbow's failure at flight school is ignored however.

Yeah that's surprise. She was meant to be Pinkie Pie in the actual show. It was suppose to be AJ and Fluttershy as the Earth ponies and Surprise (Pinkie Pie) and RD as the Pegasi. Twilight also had a different color scheme. Why they changed it? IDK, but I'm not complaining I love the show.

Did Rainbow Dash actually drop out of flight school? I think it was just a taunt the bullies used, which she then denied. I don't think it was ever officially confirmed.

She rejects that she was specifically "kicked out" of flight school, but she seems torn up and defensive about it and the bullies are pretty specific about her failings. I always interpreted the scene as suggesting she did drop out--especially after we later see just how poor Rainbow is with traditional learning in the flight test episode.

Note that Haunting Nightmare's RDP has VERY little to do with the story, though Greg has said its his favorite of the ones hes parodied. This episode is a turning point for RDP though. From here on out they are all exceptional. I love HOO!Scootaloo, but yeah, she's nowhere near Thrackerzod.

Make sure to check out the RDP shorts as well! Enunciation Emergancy was a cut part of this RDP, but I think all the others come after Haunting Nightmare, and after that they are spread around a bit, chronologically. Alicorn Day, Investment Losses, Budget Impasse and the DinkySharkFighter series are all wonderful.

Oh, I'm sorry for suggesting something you truly didn't enjoy. I'm guessing you really hated the depiction of Rainbow Dash, since you are such a big RD-fan. Still, saying that you found it worse than cupcakes is kinda unfair. Let me say a few things in defense of Rainbow Factory: The story of Cupcakes is "Pinkie decides to kill her friends and turn them into cupcakes for no reason whatsoever". In contrast, RF actually builds up a complicated world dominated by ideals which mirrors our own society, where it's all about success and failure. A lot of us also had to go through one of those big, crucial exams, where the result could change your entire life (kinda like the flight-exam in RF). One thing you just have to accept is that this is an Alternative-Universe story. Established characters can behave completely different if you change the world they grew up in, this world just gave us a Rainbow Dash that grew mentally instable because she grew up in an elitist Cloudsdale and worked in the Rainbow Factory for years. The concept why they need to kill ponies to turn them into rainbows is also well-explained (though I'm not sure if it was explained in the original or in the sequel, "Pegasus Device"). I also love that the idea of the Rainbow Factory creates such a strong contrast between the light and colorful exterior of Cloudsdale and rainbows and the dark and evil interior of the factory itself. I could go into more detail, but I just wanted to show you that there's much more to the idea than just Rainbow going insane and killing everypony.

22neptun Hehe. Don't feel sorry. I would have read the story for this anyway as I like to for this series so I have the full context. What you gave me were the suggestions for the other videos, and I liked those just fine. :) As for the story as an alternate universe tale, I suppose I can kind of see that, but it kind of seems to want to have it both ways in that regard. Scootaloo and Rainbow's relationship is described in similar terms to what we know, a few other mentions are made of some things being the same, there's even that one line that gives Rainbows job at the factory as the reason for her being able to have the large cloud home we know. It read to me more like it was all supposed to be something which could line up with canon, and all of it was just dark, terrible secrets which were hidden. Even if it is an alternate universe though, it's still hard for me to accept the Rainbow there being Rainbow, and it's not just because of a fan. If someone wrote a story where Rainbow or Rarity or any character I really like did horrible things, I'd be perfectly fine with it so long as it was written in a way where it felt like the character to me. Here though, the change to Rainbow was just far too extreme and I couldn't accept the character in the story as her at all. There just wasn't anything connecting the character as I know her to the one in the story Cupcakes isn't a great story as it has no ambitions beyond cheap shock value but the Pinkie in the story still feels like Pinkie to me despite the violence.

They're both completely ooc compared to their show-counterparts, but at least Rainbow had a reason to do the stuff she did. Pinkie just murdered her friends for no reason, just complete insanity.
