If there is a consistent pattern with basically every single Arin vs Dan game I've ever seen, it's that Dan will almost always win the virgin play of any game but as soon as Arin figures out the mechanics he turns it around... there are exceptions to this of course (Dan just has too much experience in chess for Arin to catch up, for instance) but by and large Arin always wins with a little practice. Watching them play the hexigon game and say it's not like Go, all I can think of is "play it like Go". You don't just stick to the opponent. You set up pieces a few steps away so you can build a wall before they get there. The sides probably shouldn't touch until the very end. Though they did seem to discover the idea of KO. Where you counter an attack with an attack somewhere else to try to buy a move advantage.
@NerdXlife2 жыл бұрын
There is actually a strategy to hex, so in the beginning of the round don’t focus on your side, but your opponents Side and pay attention if they plan on going towards the left, right or middle, so it’s best to close off D and H first, cuz if you close off just 1/3 of their side it already makes it hard from them.but so focus on blocking first, cuz if you manage to block a one whole side of theirs it’s basically an automatic win.

That hexagon game seems like it's only really fun if it's played between two players who fully understand the game. If either or both players don't understand the 'right' strat it's an ass whooping from whoever fumbles into an advantage first

Okay, I think I found a trick to the hexagon game: you can't block the other player by trying to go along the same axis they are playing on, but when you build properly along your axis, you're basically impenetrable. When Dan had Arin on the run for a bit, it's because he tricked him into moving along Dan's axis (parallel to the blue, opposite to how Arin's path should run). Literally the trick is to always be building a viable, efficient path.

I'm really glad Dan and Arin both realized the core mechanic of Hex - knowing when to give up - because understanding that concept makes it way more strategically fascinating. The sooner you know that you can't stop your opponent on one front, the more moves you have to block on another front. Unfortunately they didn't have a scenario with which to discover the secondary mechanic to that - noticing when, even though a front is lost, you can spend a single move to cost your opponent two or more moves. Everything done in this game is to buy yourself more moves, either by recognizing futility, or by causing a speedbump.
