We saw back in Magic Duel that the age spell also altered their personalities, as seen with snips crying like a baby and snails acting elderly. It's likely that Starlight's spell is something more akin to an illusion spell.

Except this is a different age spell created by Starlight. An age spell doesn't have to necessarily alter a personality. Different age spells can do different things. Just like their are different brainwashing spells. Plus I am sure that an age spell created by Starlight would work better than some spell thrown out by a corrupted Trixie, who didn't know the first thing about complicated spells. A simple illusion spell wouldn't have impressed Sunburst, a pony who practically knows every spell there is. Illusion spells were often done by early Trixie, which shows they are not very impressive if a naive Trixie, who was very poor at real magic, could do them Plus Starlight said 'in their childhood bodies'. Meaning their bodies were actually their child ones. If it was a simple illusion they wouldn't be in their childhood bodies.

There's some question (as you later noted) of whether it was actually an age spell or an elaborate illusion. That is Sunburst says he didn't want to "pretend" to be a foal, which could mean he knew he hadn't actually been aged to a foal. Being in their old home was certainly an illusion (Twilight could hear them from another room). Its an impressive spell regardless, but I figured if the magic was as hard as an age spell then Sunburst would have remarked on that rather than the speed at which Starlight came up with the spell.

Watching this again, Starlight and Luna are kinda similar but they handle things differently. Luna was stuck for a thousand years as Nightmare Moon, stuck in hatred and jealousy. Starlight was stuck in that for many years of her life too in a way. But how they went about handling it is different. Luna chose to punish herself for that darkness while Starlight feels chained to it in a way that is inescapable. I imagine they both see themselves as having missed out on life and now feel a little lost on how to fit in.

It is rather funny. I mean the ponies are usually naked. Something that was lampshaded in season one when the girls were getting ready for the Grand Galloping Gala and Rarity wasn't having Spike coming in when they're /undressed/ - and AJ reminds her they don't usually wear clothes... (further adding to AJ thinking fashion is ridiculous?) So even Fluttershy doesn't think much of fashion (and she at least knows what she's talking about) even if she's usually too kind to speak out about it. Then again, she thinks even less of Pinkie's comedy.

Here are my highlights as always: 0:56 I'm glad Starlight is in this episode. 1:01-1:04 When does the NOON train arrive? Gee, what a brain teaser. 1:04 Applepsychic (sort of). 1:08 Starlight trotting on the spot in excitement. 1:12-1:31 Starlight talks to every pony at the station about Sunburst. Including Vinyl Scratch. 1:12-1:16 I've said it before, but I'll say it again, it's fascinating to see a pony walk on just three hooves like that. 1:16-1:27 You have tons in common, huh? I wonder what truth this episode will reveal. 1:27 Vinyl: "What was that? I couldn't hear you." Also, Starlight's face. 1:33-1:48 Episode tries to fool us. 1:50 There he is. 1:54 Hugs. 1:56 Same here. 2:00 Animation error there: the magic glow around the suitcase is yellow when it's actually Starlight who's lifting it. (Blue = Starlight; Yellow = Sunburst.) 2:01/2:13 Hang on? Since when does the weight of something make it harder for a unicorn to lift it? That's never been an issue before. The magician does have a ball under each of their cups to begin with. They just make a slight indent at the back so they can lift it up along with the cup. We got to see Maud and Trixie one more time this season (together), the subject was relatable and they did well to set up the next episode. In my opinion, this might be the closest thing to a homerun we've had since 'Daring Done?'. All that remains is the season finale. I already know what it's about, since I couldn't avoid spoilers, but I'm looking forward to it regardless. One thing's for sure, I will have a lot to say about it - I'll probably need to post two-comments-worth of highlights (one for each episode). Until then, stay tuned.
