Unbeknownst to Rush they were absolutely huge in Brazil. Basically it started with their song Closer to the Heart, which became like the national anthem in Brazil. So when the band got back together in 2002 after a 4 year break following the unexpected deaths of Neil's daughter, followed within a year by his wife of 20 years passing... this was one of their first stops on their getting back together tour .

The cult-like following (only the best kind) of this “band” was so strong that tens of thousands of fans from distant cultures, continental & hemispheres, away were gleefully singing to a song, decades old, in unison, that doesn’t even have lyrics, so of course, it was RUSH!!! 🤘🏼❤️‍🔥

This is such a fun video to watch; the crowd was insane! Geddy Lee is one of my favorite musicians; in addition to being widely considered one of the best bass players in rock, within Rush he also sings lead and plays keyboards and synth foot pedals, sometimes at the same time! Another cool thing about him is that he and Alex have been best friends since they were 13 years old; were band mates in Rush and remain best friends today at age 71. If you want to see Geddy really showcased in an instrumental, check out 'Leave That Thing Alone' from the Live from Cleveland tour in 2011. For a follow-up to that, check out 'Where's My Thing? Here It is" live from Dallas, which features both a Geddy Lee bass solo and a Neil Peart drum solo.

Fun fact: Due to massive pirating in South America, RUSH didn't think they were that popular due to low record sales and avoiding playing there, although they had music festival offers. Obviously, by the looks on their faces, they were pleasantly surprised. They actually drew a bigger crowd in Sao Paulo the night before.

Geddy's name is actually Gary, but his Eastern European Grandma pronounced it Geddy. So it was. Alex and Geddy were good friends since Jr. High. Neil is the "new guy" which came on with the band on the second album in 1975, recruited from the parts department of his fathers farm equipment store. Neil is considered by many as the best drummer ever, but died in 2020.

Rush had a huge fan following in Brazil, but the band was unable to tour there for a long time. The fans there probably thought they would never get to see Rush in concert. When Rush finally toured there, the fans knew the music well, which could explain why they were "singing" along with an Instrumental song.

As mentioned in an earlier comment, the syncopated rythm at the beginning of the song is morse code for YYZ, the identifier for Toronto's airport. The song itself represents the, for lack of a better term, hustle and bustle of the airport as they saw it constantly flying in and out of it while on tour.

This Rush tour was their for their an new album Vapor Trails, after a 4 or 5 year hiatus due to the tragic deaths of Neil Peart's daughter in '97 and the his wife followed 18 months later, IIRC, maybe it was sooner than that. Alex and Geddy had no idea if they would ever get back together or not after the death on Neil's daughter and his leaving the band at that time to deal with it. Then his wife so soon to follow, They knew Neil was a personal man, and introvert, but with his daughter's death, he at least had his wife to lean on as well as the band, but after his wife passed, this time they knew to just let him know they were there, but wait and let him come to them when he was ready. By this time both the fans, and Alex and Geddy figured it was a Ghost of a Chance that Rush would ever get back together. Neil took off on a 55,000 mile motorcycle journey across north, central and south American continents, and If I remember correctly during or soon after he started writing his first book, Ghost Rider. But four years later, Neil surprised every one as he was ready to come back into Rush. They had a long tour across North America and Europe, and were going to end the tour at that point, But suddenly, they were invited to tour in Brazil. Rush had never been to Brazil, or South America in general, for any tour. IIRC, they weren't even aware that any of their albums had ever been distributed in Brazil, legal or otherwise. But boy, where they surprised when they got there and found out Brazil was probably Rush's largest fan base in any one particular country! They said the fans knew all their songs and would sing along! They played three Brazilian cities, to sold out soccer stadiums with one of the cities being their largest crowd ever at 60,000 people, but I think Rio was 40-45,000 and it was another city which I can't remember their names, that the 60k crowd was at. But it might have been the Rio show. There is a huge story about the Rio show itself, about the show almost never happing with heavy rains and huge issues with electricals and electronics due to the moisture. But this post is long enough, so I won't get into that. Anyway, there is a Blu-ray video release of the Rio concert, which is what this video is from, and on that Blu-ray disc it includes a documentary of their Brazilian tour that tells the whole incredible story where almost miraculously, everything turned out all right in the end and it was one of Rush's best concert performance not only for the tour, but ever. Just like the miracle of these three genius savants finding each other in life to come together and make Rush, the show near miraculously came together just in time, even the recording of it all that they were very worried about too. I recommend the Blu-ray, but one note about it; the audio is set default to stereo and sounds bad if played that way on a surround sound system (I haven't tried the stereo audio setting with a stereo system, so I can't say if it sounds fine that way or not). You have to go into the audio menu on the Blu-ray and select Tru Surround Sound if you have surround sound, then it sounds brilliant. Of course the remastered videos are even better, but if you want to own the concert show, like me that's a good tip for the most important part of the disc-audio!

Three comments. First, this is not the same show that you watched for Neil Peart's drum solo. The drum solo is from a 2004 concert in Frankfurt, Germany. But there were washing machines onstage behind Geddy for both shows and Neil wore the same type of hat. Second, comparing the crowd to an ocean is exactly what Led Zeppelin did on their House of the Holy album. It's interesting that you used the same analogy. Finally, this is not hte only instrumental from this show. There is also a performance of La Villa Strangiato, an instrumental based on Alex Lifeson's nightmares. In the middle, he does a little comedy routine that is the sort of stuff you say when you are half-asleep. Very funny. Here is the clip: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aqSXeXqpfs9na6Msi=C5ClDQqEhKUG0PBd
