The Tommy Edison Experience

7 жыл бұрын

Tommy Edison, who was born blind, teams up with James Rath, who is legally blind, to show the differences between being completely blind vs legally blind. Tommy’s blindness is caused by an underdeveloped optic nerve and James’ blindness is caused by albinism and nystagmus.
---
Watch Tommy on James’ channel where they talk about Audio Description - an additional narration track in movies and TV intended primarily for blind and visually impaired that describes the visual aspects of a film or show.

There are quite a few differences in how a blind person's brain works: www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/blind-peoples-brains-rewire-themselves-enhance-other-senses-180962653/ with not seeing anything being one of them. They have no concept of what black/white/color is, so the frame of reference for that just doesn't exist. So how can their brain fake something if it doesn't know what to fake. The only way color is from someone explaining to them that objects can look differently just by their color. And even then I can't imagine how someone who is blind can even understand the concept of color.

@@lamename2010 i dont know if this applies to me or something, but im "half blind" i lost my full vision in one eye. I dont see full black as everyone thinks, i would say that i see a mixture of white and black and this mixture is constantly changing shapes (its like those circling eyes that they show with hipnotised people in cartoons... But way more exagerated) I would say that the feeling is like when you see directly to a light for a long time, and when you turn you head out of that light you see... Well what i see everyday xD

Shaheer Ahmed it is literally a basic biological funtion. We have eyes, in order to see. If we didn’t need to see, we wouldn’t have eyes. The only reason we wouldn’t have eyes is because they are a vulnerability. It’s however very unfortunate that some people are born not being able to see.

Tommy has no visual input at all, and while James does have visual input, his eyes move involuntarily so he can't focus on things properly, also it seems like he has extremely poor vision even if he manages to focus on things for a bit. Blindness has a spectrum. I am legally blind in one eye (right). But I do wear glasses because my left eye's glasses lense is a bit stronger than regular reading glasses. I have had bad vision since I was born. We were told that I would eventually lose most of my vision. Thankfully, it is just one eye. I can drive, cook, and do all sorts of stuff that people who have no visual problems have. I just adapt. I constantly make sure I see my surroundings. Although I prefer having a person with me when I drive because they can see my blind spots for me.

Nobody in my family is blind at all, but my mom's left eye cornea is scratched and she can't get it fixed because the chance of surgery or a transplant being successful is 50%. She has just always gotten used to seeing out of one eye, and then she bought $600 contacts. They're these special glass contacts specifically made custom to her left eye and right eye (So each contact is different, but they work to level her vision out in both eyes). She loves these contacts because she's never been able to see a well out of her left eye before. She can now drive at night time without worrying if she's in the right lane or something. And I just have 20/40 vision so.. nothing bad. I just can't see things from far away.

You mean someone who lost their sight later? That would be an interesting video to see. Tommy grew up learning how to make stuff work from the get-go, and it would be interesting to contrast that with an adjustment made later in life. Having Tommy meet someone like this would be really great, too: www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2382619/Canadian-man-born-blind-sees-time-age-68.html Someone born blind who has their sight restored. I realize that the man in the article is a rare case, but doctors can do some things with ocular implants and whatnot now that have allowed a few people to go from lifelong blindness to sightedness.

They can not drive, they can not take the jobs they want. Get out and party with friends at the disco, impossible. Watch a movie. They miss a lot, even if they never had it. This is fantastic! I'm so glad you put this video up. I may have to use it next time I have to explain this to someone. (Also, sorry for all the comments I've been dropping, I just found your channel today) Braille was offered to me, but I was so bad at math, Braille took a backseat to learning that. At times, I think it would be handy, but Braille books are also like, five times the size of a normal book. Seriously, the first Harry Potter book was seven volumes by itself. I love cooking, but I've never used a George Forman. I get in there with a spatula and flip stuff, sometimes I have to use a fork to push it onto the spatula. It's hard at first, especially with pork! It looks pink when it's raw, and slightly less pink when it's cooked, but most of the time, I can't tell until I poke it with a finger. Which, p.s. YOU CAN'T DO WITH BACON! But luckily for me, I like most things a little more rare anyway. Sorry for the novel, thanks again for the video.

The 20/200 is considered legally blind with correction, so even wearing glasses that person would still not be better than 20/200. Many people, including myself, are worse than 20/200 but can still be corrected to 20/20 or very near to :)

catlover10192 For my mother glasses are just not possible, though I'm sure it's a great option for others. The motion sickness she experiences from the completely blurry areas that the lenses don't cover makes her too sick to function. She walks around with her eyes closed when she doesn't have her contacts. She doesn't even have a pair of glasses to take her from the bathroom to bed and vice versa bc the blur is so nauseating she'd prefer to have no sight at all than get ill. Hopefully it's an option for others though.

Tommy, I like how you use humor to explain blindness and the abilities of visually impaired people to sighted people in a humorous way. My students and former students are encouraged by you because they sometimes get tired of questions and moreso the assumptions about what they cannot do. I teach them that we are all advocates. I do find that it is more difficult for Sighted folks to understand legally blind/partially sighted vs total blindness. So I have each of my students make a video for their teachers fir the start if the school year. Thanks!

This actually make me cry 😭. One way I can be happy that they don’t have to see the cruel world. In another way I’m so sad for what they have to go through every single day. Life is suffering one way or another. 😭😭😭😭

I always come back to this video, to prove to myself that I as a completely blind person, ( with light perception in my central field of vision ), and being deaf for 10 months now. Can do things, that the people around me doubt I can do alone. ❤

Suggestion for a followup: the 20/200 acuity / 20° tunnel vision standard vs the Rehabilitation Act functional standard. "Legally" depends on which law you're talking about, and they're not all the same.

Perfect vision is 20-20, the higher the second number gets the worse your vision is. 20-500 (sometimes 400) and higher is legally blind IF glasses and/or contacts can not correct their vision. I have 20-450 sight and I would be legally blind if my glasses and contacts didn’t work for me

Not necessarily. This is actually a huge misconception that the visually impaired community has to deal with. Blindness is a spectrum. There is totally blind, but there is also a huge number of different types of vision impairments that would classify someone as being legally blind. In some cases, things might be blurry, and others someone might have a very limited field of peripheral vision, while still others can see clearly, but things need to be very close up. These vision impairments cannot be corrected through wearing glasses, having Lasik etc. (And if we had a dollar for every time someone asked us why we don’t just get better glasses or have surgery, many of us would be very wealthy LOL!)

I love your awful jokes and bad puns 😂. I'm legally blind out of my left eye. Vision is about 20/200 from having chicken pox as a kid. The virus attacked my eye and I almost went completely blind in it from being covered with white scar tissue. I had a cornea transplant but since the chicken pox virus never leaves your body, it's flared up again over the years and I'm back to being legally blind. I can see colors and rough shapes, but every thing has a white fog over it. As a kid it totally messed up my depth perception. I had to wear a freaking eye patch and used to run into walls lol
