MN man in my 60's here. With over 11k comments I don't expect anyone to read this, but I need to say something. I LOVE 70's rock with organ in it. Sometimes I feel like I'm alone there, but Manfred Mann, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, even come early REO Speedwagon just turns my crank!! I play guitar in a few bands and the keys add SO MUCH!

Bruce actually wrote the song, but a lot of people apparently only heard this version and therefore got intrigued by the reference to a "douche" (not to mention that sample from the timeless classic "Chop Sticks").

Maybe this sounds weird, maybe I’m a pussy.. whatever you want to call it... I turned 17 on October 11th, 2020. Every time I hear this song I want to break down crying. My dad was born in the 60s, so naturally, I grew up surrounded by classic rock. This was one of his favorite songs, I heard it constantly on the radio. It reminds me of all the childhood truck rides with him. I lost my dad to suicide in 2013. Now that I’m almost an adult, it’s getting so much harder rather than easier. I miss him more than ever. All I have left is the music he listened to.

Basically, the song is about a dude driving around his town on his motorcycle. He sees the children playing and feels his age. Recruiters come out and try to get him for different jobs. The opportunity to be a star catches his eyes and he becomes obessed with it. He is blinded to everything else as he chases that. His community moves on, but he is still stuck on being a star.

@@BadlndsBob Manfred Mann didn't write this song Bruce Springsteen did. Once he started coving his own song this one lost air time unless requested. It's about Springsteen's younger days night racing hot rods. The Duece was his Duesenberg he revved up it's engine and it was his hot rod of choice "his runner in the night" (night race). It's not popular today because most younger people don't know about the Jersey Shore lifestyle around the strips near the boardwalks with their Merry go Round. One bad car crash and the Calliope (Merry go Round) crashed on to the ground because he got blinded by the lights (doing 80 mph's at the boardwalk). Back in the days it made sense but today that lifestyle is history and so is this song as far as topping charts anymore

Since DJs don’t have to play songs off physical media and switch them after they play, break songs have gone out of style. That’s why “Stairway to Heaven” was played so often; it gave you enough time to do your business, grab something to eat or drink and still be back to change it to “Aqualung”.

My wonderful uncle, who was like a dad to me, used to say how great it was and that I would get to like it. 45 years later I realised he was right. He passed away last year and I now love it. When the intro comes on it brings a tear to my eye and my uncle, brothers and I are sat in front of his radiogram again in 1974 counting down the top 40. Great treasured memories because of a song I used to hate. Ain`t life strange.

The original long version by Bruce Springsteen tells of events and characters when he was starting out gigging with Steel Mill and the early E Steet Band - e.g. some drag queen at a night club liked his music - 'Some silicone sister with a manager mister told me I'd got what it takes,' etc etc.
