To be fair, this time around it wasn't even really that he was proactively trying to screw Calvin and Shane over, the encounter with Rick just played out in such a way that he ended up pulling ahead at the last minute. Had he brought Calvin along it would have been a joint win. I mean he also latched onto them like a tick and rode their coattails to the doorstep of victory, but that's kinda on them for letting him lol

Fantastic that you've discovered Cosmic Encounter! I still have the original that came out in 1977. It is literally my favorite board game; my friends and I played it all the time. In fact, we played it the normal way so much that we started varying things. What we mostly did is play multiple powers. I think we started out with 4 to 6 each, and eventually we just dealt all the powers out to everyone. I think that made us have something like 20 powers a piece. There was tweaking since some of the powers kind of cancelled each other out if the same player had them. Anyway, I hope you have many hours of fun. Play the game for enjoyment, and if you win it's a bonus. :)

Some critical rules errors here. Ships on foreign colonies never add to that planet's defense, even when they ally with the planet's owner. The ships on the planets are bystanders. You cannot play more than 1 flare per turn. It is not allowed to look at other players' hands. But damn, Calvin is just an incredibly charming guy. Great attitude and presence at the table. Even when he was really foolish during the end. He had absolutely no reason to not target another planet and play an Attack against Aaron and win it alone.

UGH!! 1:23:00 You cannot show anyone your hand. There are alien powers that allow this, but just doing so destroys the metagame. I really liked watching this video, especially the 1st encounter. Remember, you are only allowed to play 1 flare per encounter, reinforcements can be played by the main players, cosmic zap only cancels an alien power(you would need to play card zap to cancel a flare), and players get the option of a 2nd encounter if they had a victory or a successful deal.

All Calvin had to do to win was just attack Aaron (or literally anyone it gave him on that turn) on a planet where he could win. If he loses the encounter-- the Spiff let him win for free. If he wins the encounter, he wins. All he has to do was pretend he was going all in on an attack -- to announce he was going for the double-cross on Aaron -- who would then defend as hard as he could (and still lose the game) -- or he could play a negotiate card (and lose the game).

Really enjoyed this but I have a suggestion: for games that have as much going on as this does it might be helpful to play a couple rounds, untaped, so that you guys can get a better feel for the game; especially those of you that haven’t played before. Then once everybody has a good grasp of what’s going on you can restart and begin filming. I only say this because sometimes the flow of the game gets broken up by a lot of questions and confusion over what a player can do, when, and results.
