I think what the discussion of Allison's power is missing is the acknowledgement that parents are meant to fulfill their kids' needs, not vice versa. A kid getting everything they want doesn't fulfill their needs on a deeper level, but "I heard a rumour you stopped crying" completely bypasses their need. Rather than figuring out why they're having this emotion and teaching them how to deal with it, they're taught that their emotion has to go away because it's annoying for the parents. (And yes, that's also frequently true for spanking your kid.)

I kind of see the point that Shane and Aaron are making, but I think there's a difference between the kind of parental/social coercion that you can acceptably exercise (scolding your kid, lecturing them, talking to them, arguing with them, sometimes physically preventing them or making them do things, creating incentives and disincentives for particular behaviours etc) and like literally brainwashing them and turning them into a machine that has no free will. Like in some abstract you can argue that kids don't have free will because they're controlled by their parents, but they still do, just within the confines of being a child (like if that is not free will, then nobody alive has free will because we're all operating within the constraints of some system). Parents have a lot of responsibility over their children, but children aren't the property of their parents, they're individuals with rights (morally speaking) and personality and will, it a'int OK to just railroad over those things fundamental to human existence just cuz you're stressed out dealing with em.

Also, when you start it’s easy to abuse it and start making excuses to use it for more things. Spanking was also abused by a lot of parents and that’s why it’s not encouraged anymore. @OneNightStark4 жыл бұрын
Allison is an interesting case in a lot of ways, but her use of her powers was definitely the least justifiable. Luther and Diego were both trying to keep doing the hero thing (Luther believing he was the early warning/defense against an invasion, Diego just stabbing home invaders), Klaus was just trying to hide from his, and Five learned his lesson about messing around and was just bidding time until could stop the end of the world. Allison? She was making sure she got what she wanted. Punishing your kid is one thing because they are still able to disobey. They have that option, you're just making it the less desirable one so it's not WORTH it to disobey. Allison removed the choice altogether. Whatever she says is true, no matter what. I don't know if they're going to make it as powerful as they do in the comics, where whatever she said could literally bend reality and cause physical manifestations to make itself true, but even in the show it's brainwashing and gives her total control over people as long as she can get the words out.
@crystalwang15324 жыл бұрын
Allison never had to work for anything in her life because of her power, rumoring people is the only way she knows how to deal with problems and it’s not like she had the best parental role models. I get y’all think they have free will to object but honestly not all kids do even without the power you get yelled at, smacked, put in time out all for things your parents don’t want you to do and even told to stop crying sometimes. So do we actually have free will as children or do we just say they do because we believe all people are automatically born with it. So I'm just here because there are no comments sections on netflix but I'm really annoyed and feel like ranting. Playing music IS NOT ABOUT TALENT. Practice is what makes the performer. People only say other people are more talented than them because they don't want to put in the amount of effort it actually takes to get good. The most famous performers around the world aren't the ones with the most talent, they are the ones with the strongest work ethic.
@Saje3D2 жыл бұрын
There are still levels of talent. Not every performer is a songwriter or composer and not every musician has the ability to be. Some people can pick up and play a song by ear. Some people can’t. Just like not every writer becomes Mark Twain just by virtue of writing a great deal. Practice doesn’t always make perfect. Ability and inclination have a lot to do with as well. Not everyone who thinks they’re funny actually are. You can work to be funny, but some folks have natural timing and a talent for making people laugh. But, yes, without the hard work to go with it, talent is mostly useless. It can point you in a direction and occasionally ease the journey, but you still have to cross the distance yourself.

@@victoria1247 Loool, actually his argument is fantastic. If your premise to why what she did was wrong was because she took away the free will of the child, that would suggest that you would never use the power no matter the circumstances. I believe that the majority of people would use that power at the very least to save their child's life. I also think that that is morally right. I think taking away the free will of your child to save their life is morally right. I would then not go onto argue that the woman in the show is wrong BECAUSE of free will. The idea that she's wrong for using it is fine, the reasoning is wrong. It goes beyond free will and has to account for the severity and extent to which she used her power. We have to establish some sort of baseline to decide when we should and shouldn't use this power as parental figures. If your child says i'm going out to steal some money or something else, do you use your power to stop them? Can you use the logic that they could've gotten themselves shot by the police if they got caught to justify your actions? Or is the fact that they were going to do something morally wrong enough to use the power to stop them? These are interesting questions to ponder. I think it is more relative than we like to think. The way the woman in the show used the power doesn't bother me that much if i'm honest but I can see how it would bother others. Those "others" should think about why it's wrong beyond " Free Will" because unless they're willing to take away their child's free will for any reason, they would be hypocrites.
@victoria12474 жыл бұрын
eric gonzalo no I get your point, you just don’t seem to be getting anyone else’s. When they say it’s ethically wrong you jump to an unnecessary extreme like suicide to try and prove your point. And like I said previously every comment on the SUBJECT MATTER (Allison brainwashing her child). You seemed to ignore that part in favor of trying to be right. If only I could be as powerful and cool as a witch. Also close minded? Because I find you bringing up bullshit from left field for no reason and called you out for spamming people’s comments on the subject matter annoying? In this comment it’s “the point of the discussion is to know if using her power on her child is really ethically wrong” but a few comments ago it’s “ (im not talking about what she did in the show)”. @@davidajayi6516 Klaus seems based of Nathan. He even has the ability to speak to the dead. The demeanour of the character is pretty synonymous except he's not as funny. Doesn't compare to me.

Jojo_N_Dat I’m not sure if you’ve watched everything or ur watching with blind wave but klauses character arc is more well defined and he’s not based on Nathan the comic is him going through a similar thing
@jojo_n_dat73254 жыл бұрын
@@davidajayi6516 Still not comparable. Nathan is a much more likeable and compelling character to me. I can't distinguish Klaus apart from being a C tier Nathan. He comes across much less likeable to me.

One of the only things that really bugged me about Umbrella Academy was how they didn't explain, as they apparently do in the source material, that all the other children died. Mysteriously. And it's heavily implied Father did it.

There is a difference between punishment and taking away a child's free will. They can still take a cookie after getting the belt.

@AD-zp4pd4 жыл бұрын
I see both sides of what blind wave is saying. If your child is so so sooo young that you can’t explain, ration or comfort your child about why you should or shouldn’t do things than I understand. But as we see in the later episodes the daughter is too old, to where it’s the point that it’s creepy, she’s at the age where you could parent your child, and instead you are taking their will away and not teaching the kid anything

This is way late, but regarding the argument on whether Allison using her power on her daughter is fair or not, there is a definite difference between punishing a kid to stop them from doing something, and mind-controlling them into not doing it. Yes, having the punishment seems like forcing the child, but the point is that they still have the choice to disobey. The punishment is not a removal of choice, it is an addition of consequence. When a child has recieved a punishment or a threat of punishment, they need to learn to weigh the options. Is the act worth the punishment? If you mind-control the child, you are actually removing the child's free will. The child will never get to grow as their own person and form their own values, and they will never learn to accept the consequences of their actions, because you have taken away their ability to make choices which have consequences. You always have the option to say no. There may be horrible consequences to doing so, but you always have the option to take those consequences. If that choice is removed, you're nothing more than a puppet to the person who removed that choice.

if your kid(s) is dying earlier than you and on their death bed and was scared would you use it and say "i heard a rumor it's okay." ? If your kid was having sex "always use protection unless you want kids" ? Obviously you'd want to use it to save your kids lives...so safe sex? no drugs? no alcohol? Free will is a nice concept but truth is when you live with your parents as a kid there is no free will it's called do as you're told. Always. Not trying to justify it. I just think if anyone had this power you'd use it atleast once. It's basically mind control. Always a temptation. Especially a temptation when you want the best for your kids and family.

But I wouldn’t go too bad like you lot said. I heard a rumour you think you’re just ordinary. But the real question is, does Claire have superhuman powers? Are their powers genetic?
